I wasn't in scouts at any point in my life, but I have this to say in response to TGM's post. In foods class (Pretty much home economics, but with cooking as the only focus) I would juggle sharp knives while I waited for my group to get a pot of water to boil, and my teacher warned me that if I broke the knives, I'd have to buy new ones.

I am an Eagle Scout and look back on my scouting experience as one of the best parts of my life and upbringing. However, since leaving, I've lost my faith in the scouts. For one thing the BSA's blatant discrimination against gays and the non-religious have really put me off. Also, as the core of Jarre's post indicates, they seem to have lost their way in what they are teaching the youth of today and what they should be teaching them.

Now I had heard about the gay issue and I totally agree with you but religion too?? If they don't like the non-religious then I don't know how I got to work for them! LOL I was a pack leader, troop leader, and even worked in the main office.

Yeah it's not as publicized, but there is a long history of them forcing out or denying membership to any members that explicitly state or show their 'non-religiousness'. Some nations aren't as stringent on it but in the US it's prevalent. It's actually in the by-laws.

"The Boy Scouts of America maintains that no member can grow into the best kind of citizen without recognizing an obligation to God. In the first part of the Scout Oath or Promise the member declares, ‘On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law.’ The recognition of God as the ruling and leading power in the universe and the grateful acknowledgment of His favors and blessings are necessary to the best type of citizenship and are wholesome precepts in the education of the growing members."

That kind of thing scares me a bit.

I'm sure someone could win a court cse against them for discrimating them because of their beleifs. I absolutly hate it when religeon gets in the way of someone wanting to take part in an organisation. I am not religeous, I beleive in no religeon, but I wont tell a person to F off or ban them from doing something just because they don't have the same beleifs as me, so why should a religeon be any different. Its people in power making power hungry decissions again based ont heir personal beleifs.

So far, the courts have ruled with the BSA every time.

However a lot of public companies have started to slowly pull sponsorships over the years.

not to mention local governments ceasing to give them the benefits other non-profits would; for example, giving them free access to their community center.
