Re: For those too lazy to make a decision that will have a positive effect on your he

My husband is retired and living on a pension. I am retired with no pension. Neither of us are old enough for Social Security. We are also now supporting our daughter and her 2 young children. Trust me when I say that our grocery bill is stressful. If you shop wisely and watch sales at a few area stores and make your weekly meals according to stuff thats on sale, you can stay in a budget and eat decently healthy. The bs about healthy food being too expensive is just that....bs. I do it every single day and I do it while I'm pinching pennies.

And as far as making society stop supporting overweight people, good luck with that. I remember a neighbor I had, she had to be over 300 pounds and had an ulcer on her calf. If she would lose weight, the ulcer would have a much better chance at healing but since her eating habits were fast food or take out, that wasn't going to happen anytime soon. She had several expensive skin grafting procedures done but they didn't take. She used to come to me so I could clean out her ulcer and bandage it. I tried every single time to convince her to get up and out more. I even took her places to get her moving. She was collecting SSI for her obesity/ulcer. She was living off my/your taxes and they were also paying her medical bills. I'd rather drive a bit farther for my burger if its going to take a few people off the gravy train.

Some people are smart enough to know that eating the crappiest of crap food three times a day for a month is not a good idea, even before that dumbass "documentary" came around.

As someone who doesn't, and has never really, been much into "fast food" (though I do have a nasty habit of eating more pizza then I should) I honestly don't think the govenment should be the ones deciding what we do or do not eat. People don't buy fast food because it's cheaper, because it never was cheap, people buy it because it's faster. I could always go out and buy a buncha buns, some ground beef and fire up the grill and feed a lot more for a lot cheaper, but then I'd have to spend that time cooking. It's because people nowadays don't want to spend the time cooking and preparing their own food, just like they don't want to spend the time doing some basic excersize (myself included sadly) they go out and buy crap food.

It's not ignorance, people know this food is bad for you. It's not prices, as this stuff costs more then going to a grocery store. It's laziness and convience. Fast Food is stuff you can pick up for a buncha kids after a long day on the drive home without too much effort, and getting it once in a while won't ever affect anyone in the long term. It's when people start living on this crap, buying it daily, is when they're going to have problems. Especially if they don't work off the fat they just ate.

Now all this talk about fast food is making me hungry....but it's 12 am by me and I'm too lazy to go out. But I'll probably pick up a nice, greasy, hunk-o-fat burger on my way home from work tomorrow just because.

It can also vary based on food allergies, which in my case, rules out everything with wheat and gluten in it (basically all bread and noodles). I can have some breads in moderation, but if I eat too much wheat or have lots of soda, I'll start ballooning up again in a short time.

Wheat and High Fructose Corn Syrup are in practically everything and mostly in the cheapest things. I have to go over all the labels in the store and stuff, it sucks. I wanted to make teriyaki chicken this week, I have to check the label on each sauce. What's the teriyaki that's the most expensive?

The one without HFCS in it.

All the cheaper versions of the sauce have HFCS. It never fails on any product. They're cheaper because they're sold in higher volume because HFCS is just filler/perservative.

Re: For those too lazy to make a decision that will have a positive effect on your he

You know what? My diet is extremely limited. I recently had digestive issues and had 90% of my stomach removed. My stomach/digestinal tract is so touchy that I can't eat many bottled/canned/packaged items. Want Teriyaki sauce that you can eat? Make it yourself. Rice wine does not contain gluten so this recipe would work for you. I used this recipe for my JP friend that comes to visit on occasion and he loved it.

Take 4 Tbls. sugar, 1 cup soy sauce, and 1 cup mirin (A Japanese rice wine but you can substitute saki. But if you do, you'll need to add more sugar since mirin is a sweet wine at a ratio of 3 [sake]:1 [sugar]) and put it in a saucepan. Mix well. Turn your burner on low or med. low heat, just so the liquid does a soft simmer. Simmer for a few minutes until it slightly thickens. Thats it. You may have to adjust the sugar to your own personal preference because Western Teriyaki Sauce is a bit sweeter than Japanese.

Health issues can make your grocery bill jump but if you take a bit more time to make some of your own "convienence" foods that can help a lot. I have to do it quite often as I get very sick from hydrogenated oils....go check out some pre-prepared food labels for that......its in EVERYTHING!

Bottled Teriaki sauce would be loaded with sodium anyway.

Re: For those too lazy to make a decision that will have a positive effect on your he

Thats the whole point TGM, we are too relaint on convienance foods, whack it in the microwave and nuke for 6 minutes and you are eating. People now are cooking from scratch less and less. cooking from scratch makes meal healthier because you are using fresh ingredients etc. and its your choice how much salt, sugar etc. you put into foods rather than the high content in convenience foods to make it "taste ok and preserve it"

In the Uk in my city, due to social problems, not only have they stopped allowing fast food restaurants to be built / building converted etc. but also they have stopped any new liscenced premises from being built to try and stop the already out of control alcahol problem from getting worse.

It is unfortunate that in thr supermarket, all the food that is affordable for someone on the dole (state benefit) is full of shit. When I was at college at 16 many years ago i worked as a cashier at a supermarket, you'd see the crap bought by these families, value sausages, chips, chicken nuggets, burgers etc etc. It was rare they bought vegetables.

In the UK we are paying more for food now due to fuel costs going up and store overheads (meaning they can't get the billions of £ profit so they make us pay) A single cabbage now costs £0.79 ($1.50) 1kg of potatoes (5lb's) costs £0.89 ($1.69), 4 loose carrots costs £0.69 ($1.31) then a standard chicken for 4 people costs £2.99 ($5.68) so lets add that up.... £5.36 or $10.18 for one meal for a family of 4.

Now lets work out what sausages, beans and chips costs....

                Tesco value sausages.... 12 for £1.32 ($2.50), 1 KG Bag of tesco value chips £0.99 ($1.88) for 500g, 2 cans of beans £0.13 each. = £0.26 ($0.49)

So for sausage beans and chips for a family of 4 thats £2.57 ($4.88) which is half the cost of a properly cooked nutricous meal. when you compare the stats between the foods you will see that the sausage and chips option has 6 times the salt and fat content of the healthy chicken dinner cooked from scratch.

and because kids are brought up on this crap, some don't even know what fruit and veg tastes like and turn their noses up at them.

Re: For those too lazy to make a decision that will have a positive effect on your he

I think that the price of fruits/veggies is probably area dependant to a certain extent. Stuff in the stores is normally rather expensive for what it is. 2 red/yellow bell peppers for $5? That's a ripoff. But I know that there have been some vegatable stands that have opened within the last few years, where you can buy these things far cheaper. I can buy a pound of red/yellow bell peppers from them for about $2.50 as an example. However until we found those stands, we didn't think there was anywhere else really to get them. Now granted, we could have probably looked harder for other places, and maybe we'd have found something we didn't know about, and maybe we wouldn't have.

And I'm not so much disagreeing with TGM as trying to say, the price of vegatables is what it is in a store. It's not like meat where you can just buy some kind of cheaper kind of meat if you're on a budget.

I'm curious to see if people start gardening more, because I've been surprised with what you can grow in a small amount of space. My cousin lives in Seattle, he recently got a bigger house with a real lawn. His old house was very small with maybe a front lawn that was 5' by 10' or thereabouts, and he used most of it for a garden. He had a surprising amount of plants there too, even zuchinni that he had on a trellis, which I would not have thought of doing.

I will say that I for one, hope that other guys continue going to the fast food crap. It just means I get to impress the girls even more with my cooking skills!

Sadly though I think I'm forever condemned to being just "a good friend/the bestest friend ever!" status ; ; so I don't know how much that'd help :/

You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be misqouted and then used against you.

If grocery stores are too expensive in the fruits and veggies dept. go to your local farmers market. Most decent size cities have them.

Yep, you have to think out of the box. The local store that is 4 minutes from my house charges me $2.50 for a red bell pepper. On my budget, that is a luxury. So I'll wait for a sale and cook a dish that has red pepper in it that week. I also watch out for road side stands that sell veges and Farmers Markets like Cotner suggested. I also look at places like Sam's Club (warehouse club) or there is a store called Woodman's here that is the biggest GD grocery store I've ever seen.

You need to watch all the stores in the area. My mother lives closer to Woodmans than I do and I call her and give her a list of things to look at when she goes there. Then she calls me back with prices and I can figure out if a trip to the store there is worth it for me. It's a balancing act and it takes time and patience. Unfortunately most people don't want to bother. They just want to stop at the closest store, run in, get what they want, and run out. Stores are counting on that.

Yep Jarre I totally agree with you. Everything is fast fast fast in this world nowadays. So many people piss and moan about too tired, too busy, takes too much time, don't know how, etc. I remember as a child picking up chicken heads after my grandmother chopped them off and also helping her pluck the feathers. Now that was making chicken for supper! I'll tell you what....I've never had better chicken than what my grandmother made. It was fresh, it was made right, and it was goooooooooooood!

I listen to NPR regularly (National Public Radio, SHADDAP! - I like the music too ;_, and I distinctly remember a report on the general price jump in produce. This elderly couple developed a profitable produce business in the middle of Brooklyn, with a 10x10 square of soil hehe. Restaurants and individual consumers alike are begging for a good deal on produce - I guess it's possible with a garden instead of a farm >.>
