Laziness indeed. When I was newly married we couldn't afford a house. We lived in an apartment in a large complex and our "outside" was a small balcony. Grills were not allowed on them for fire purposes so what else could I use it for? Thats right, a garden. Here is how I grew some of the vegetables:

Others were more traditional and in regular planters. The only thing I had to make sure of was to let the people living below us know that I was going to be watering plants in the early morning. They didn't mind since it was dry by the time they wanted to use their patio. I also would share some of my "crop" with them.
