I only half-read this thread b/c I'm 6' 138~ and don't really care if I last past 40 so I don't have much input...but there was some quote about eating 8oz untrimmed prime rib for dessert...fuck me if I could afford that I would every night, I'm fucking starving for prime rib now.

Re: For those too lazy to make a decision that will have a positive effect on your he
Well, Grandmom just made me eat my notepad... I hope she's happy.
I'm conflicted on this one. On the one hand, I consider weight to be a choice someone makes. I'm skinny right now, have been for years. I work out now, but between the time I got out of the Marines and the time I took up Karate, there were a good half dozen years or so when I did very little physical exercise. I still stayed skinny. I chose to be that way. Not by choosing to have an eating disorder, but by choosing to do things that made getting fat harder. I was a student, too, sat on my butt all day, wrote papers and attended classes. The sorts of things I chose were:
1. Not to have food easily accessible to me. If I'm working on the computer, the nearest source of nourishment to me is a bottle of water or can of juice. The kitchen is upstairs, on the other side of the house from me. If I feel like a snack, there's a walk involved, and I'm kind of lazy.
2. To get involved in things that weren't related to eating or nearby anywhere I could eat. If I'm playing computer games, I don't trot the laptop upstairs to the kitchen. If I'm outside, I'm somewhere that hitting up the nearest burger joint is difficult. It's a walk, and I have to put down whatever I'm doing to take care of it. Usually I don't notice I'm hungry til I start wondering why I have the odd abdominal pains.
3. To stock the fridge with things that weren't quick and easy to make. When I have a meal, it's a construction project. As I've said, I'm lazy. If I'm going to make something, it won't be a snack, I'll wait til I have to make some sort of meal. I also tend to stock staples, lean meats, and veggies. When I do cook, it's usually pretty good for me.
Making these choices kept me pretty thin. So, my sympathy for people who are fat isn't high. You made different choices. I'd normally be content to let natural selection take care of you. I get more opportunities to mate, enjoy recreational areas, etc.
On the other hand, I'm also at worst center-left in my politics. I believe government exists to provide a safety net so there's a floor to how far any one member of society is allowed to fall before being helped. They might fall down and stay there, but down there isn't as bad as it could be. This isn't because I particularly like society, but rather because I enjoy the benefits of being in it. Like easy access to food and water, shelter, internet, etc. If I could do that without having to see too many other people, I'd probably be happier. Since I'm stuck with you people, I like having the net in place. Who knows? I might be the next guy to fall down.
With that political view, I'm kind of in Grandmom's boat. I could leave my insurance plan and go onto the individual market, probably save myself a little money. But in abandoning the company plan, I'd also abandon everyone on it who isn't healthy. Their premiums would rise, and they'd be worse off for it. Also, if something like cancer happens to me later, my premiums rise, and there are no healthy people to subsidize poor cancerous me now. To be a liberal, (or at least partially so), requires that if I want that safety net, I have to accept that there's a ceiling as well. There's a ceiling on how much I can earn due to taxes, and how low of premiums I can pay on health insurance due to carrying less healthy people. I accept those ceilings, just as I accept that if I want the benefits of society, I'm naturally stuck with having to accept society itself. I work part time at the state liquor store, trust me, large numbers of you are complete morons.
I see how they're trying to set up a safety net with this here, but I don't agree with the execution, and maybe not even with the basic idea itself. First off, they're legislating common sense and morality, which is stupid anyway. Secondly, they've put in this moratorium in such a way that it really can't succeed. At best, if they get both extensions they'll stop fast food places from opening for two years. McDonald's doesn't close an outlet in two years, they rarely close one period. They'll move them around to different areas, but it's rare you see one completely shut down, at least in large cities. All it seems you'll accomplish with this is cutting down the number of streetside taco stands. That's really the only fast food business with real flux in it. In which case it almost seems more anti-immigrant than anti-obesity.
Yes, obesity is a problem, and it costs us a boatload of money each year. At the same time though, I think you really need to solve this culturally rather than legislatively. Things like the "slow food" movement and health education in schools. Making fast food less appealing by curbing avertising, maybe. If you're going to regulate availability like this, you really need a wider, deeper approach than they have now. This seems kind of pointless. It looks good on paper, but I doubt it'll accomplish what they want.
Re: For those too lazy to make a decision that will have a positive effect on your he
I'm from a different generation. Being on any type of government welfare was a bad thing if you were able to do something about your issue. If you are fat and having health issues related to your weight and you do nothing about it, why should we support you? The entire "let's educate people" hasn't worked. When I was in elementary school we had all that stuff shoved down our throats. Our parents were even "educated" by participation. It was stuffed down my kids throats, many pamphlets were sent home and programs were participated in, and my grandson is in pre-school and they are doing it to. And yet, still here we are, a nation of big fat arses.
Want to hear something screwed up? I have a health issue that makes it impossible for me to get insurance (unless I want to pay SKY HIGH premiums). If my husband would lose his insurance, and this is a very real possibility, I'm a cookie. Currently I've been maintaining well because I'm taking medication, regulating my diet, and getting appropriate medical care. My condition is considered terminal so the premiums are out of my league for any other insurance. The government won't cover me until I reach a certain stage in my disease, but until then I'm on my own. That means all the medication I would need, I won't get. Any tests I need done, I won't get. I'll basically be on death's door before they'll help me which will probably happen pretty quickly with no insurance. BUT if I go out and gain 150+ pounds, I can get SSI and then they'll cover all my bills. Seriously, how screwed up is that?
While I'm not a fan of the government putting their tendrils in our lives, something needs to be done.

I couldn't imagine DiV without our local Gaming Grandma!
(I've always been a fan of your Yoshi icon, too.)

Pfft I'm too ornery and I'm not going anywhere. Yoshi is like my favorite Nintendo character but Bobomb is a close second! I've always wanted a really big plush Yoshi but thats something thats eluded me! lol I do have Bobomb earrings that I made out of crafting clay. My son always says "I will NOT be seen with you in public if you wear those!" My Assassin's Creed t-shirt is fine but not my Bobomb earrings. Damn elitest!
