    Exactly.

Too true, but that's not going to happen any time soon.

China does have a lot of money right now, but like Germany and Japan it's their politics that will keep them from crossing that threshold. If you read Greenspan's book you find out about just how important property rights/laws are. It's unbelievable how much of the economy's success is tied directly to the constitution and bill of rights, and explains the various kinds of economies.

The USA is only true capitalist economy in the world. People mistakenly think Canada is too, but we're really what Greenspan refers to as a Fabian Socialism.

Yeah, because an economic system is obviously what corrupts government. Look at those poor oppressed Canadians! Must be horrible with their leadership having carte blanche to do as they please with few or no repercussions, the ability for the government to imprison people (in horrible conditions at that) indefinitely without trial, circumventing their own constitution to wiretap people with little oversight.

            Oh. WAIT A SECOND.

PLEASE don't call it that. It gives capitalism a bad name, and makes it easier for anti-capitalists to gain support.

We certainly had, at some times, a capitalist economy. The events of this week alone should prove that we do not have one today.

Hell you guys STILL get more accomplished than we do; where as you have 2 parties in the Senate, we've got 5 in our Parliament. Too many fucking opinions. And no, you do not want Fabian Socialism. Basically you either work for the Government or you're never going to be well off. For example, in the USA you can make a lot of money investing in real estate, but here in Canada the government will tax the shit out you and you really won't make all that much. The founding fathers are perhaps the greatest collection of minds in history.

EDIT: Damn it I had a funny clip i wanted to share from Dilbert where the Garbage Man brings back Franklin to life... but I can't find it on youtube or anywhere

                        Re: Fareed Zakaria

It really depends on what it is that you are looking for from your nation of residence, if you want money and lots of oportunities to make it then yes, probably the pre-Bush US would've been a really nice place to live.

But there are way too many other considerations besides money as to why someone would much rather live in Canada instead, or in my case why I would much rather stay in Mexico except for maybe some sort of temporary work deal that would allow me to boost my savings account.

But living there (in the US) or thinking about rising a family in that place? Hell no.

And this is the problem people have. Socialism and greed are opposites of each other. Yes, if you want to be rich and gloat about it, that's not going to happen. That doesn't make it bad. There's a helluva lot more to life than having the most toys-- or rather, as the vast majority of people in a capitalist system are stuck with, attempting to keep up with the Jones'. If you need a big number in your bank account, or a shiny car, or a McMansion in order to feel successful in life, there is something wrong with you.

While that's partly true, you're the perfect example of all the books I've been reading lately about financial education and the various misconceptions/kinds of thought. That's a whole other topic though and if you want to find out what I've been learning with my dad, Pony up the $6500 and get into Rober Kiyosaki's course.
