Well, ya see, there were these guys in red coats that started pushing us around, pushing people out of thier homes, seizing cargo and placing taxes on it. We didn't like that so much.

They might have prevented us from having these silly laws if not for one little snag in thier plans:

    They were wearing red.

You have to ask yourself who do you need to protect yourself from
    Ze germans?

Now the Swiss have a moderate population (2/3 that of the USA or more) of which you can say roughly 70% of the citizens have undergone this training and have two or more weapons in their residence at anytime. So would it surprise you to know that the Swiss have one of the lowest crime rates and murder rates in the world? Its consistently ranked in the top 10 safest countries to live in, where as the USA seldom breaks the top 100.

Of all the countries in the world wear arms are allowable, the USA constantly ranks in the top 10 most deadly. In 2005 there were more deaths due to guns, then automobile accidents the first time this has happened anywhere in the world since records were kept.

I don't think it has to do with the guns, but more so the society in which americans find themselves. It is a "keeping up with the jones' " mentality. Which spurs anger and hate, jealousy and greed, which lead to people feeling the need to rob, rape, murder etc at gun point.

I think its a lack of respect for guns to be honest, you have people that respect guns for what they are, and they seldom make the paper save for freak accidents when a child finds daddys .45. The ones who do make the papers are the ones who don't respect a gun as the tool it is. Im sure its sounds like a broken record but guns do not kill people, people kill people.

I'm entirely impressed with Switzerland. If there was ever a place that I would emigrate to, it would be there. I don't know what type of immigration laws they have though. For their sake, I hope they are strict as hell. With their luck, very few people move there.

Switzerland is a place that you don't screw with. Much like I wish the U.S.A. were.

You have to ask yourself who do you need to protect yourself from, why and why isn't the government / authorities dealing with these people you want to protect yourself against?
In many neighborhoods, you would need a gun to protect yourself from people who are only dangerous because the government is attacking them (that is, because of drug laws).

And then there are places (or times, rather) when you might want a gun to protect yourself from government employees ransacking your property, such as after a hurricane or a massive flood. But I assume protecting your property in that instance would result in a bullet to the head or life in prison.

And as you consider it a fault in society that we have so many people wanting guns for protection, I'd argue it's a fault in society that we believe government should protect us. Government should provide justice for crimes, and not necessarily prevent crimes (not explicitly, anyway).

In addition to what Cometgreen said, I'll point out that 30 minutes waiting for the police to arrive is an eternity.

Nice of the police to show up though either after or while my family has or is currently being raped/killed/robbed/insert crime here.

You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be misqouted and then used against you.
