Re: Hit-and-Run in Hartford street, no efforts made to help victim.

You would stop, lose your job (suing for it back isn't really an option, you chose not to show up) and risk losing what ever savings you have, both outcomes making it nigh impossible to provide for those whom you have already agreed to support, to help some random guy you have no responsibility to?

You might, and you might not when really presented with the situation. I personally will put those of my family far above any random person, and would have no problem living and providing a comfortable life for them.

Even I did lose this one time, I would be making so much money on that previous bet that losing once wouldn't matter.

And yes, I always make that mistake.

I don't believe my social responsibility ends at my immediate kin.

We'll know for sure whether or not I'd stop when I see an injured man on the side of the road.

I can get another job. What I couldn't do is get my self-respect back.

Besides, screw lawsuits, wait 'til the press gets hold of "GOOD SAMARITAN FIRED FOR HELPING CRITICALLY INJURED STRANGER". I'd probably end up with a better job from that publicity.

Sure, but what do you do in the meantime. It is very easy to say, but to actually put it to work is another matter entirely.

When genuinely having to weigh between them or a stranger, it does for me.

You might need it to pay for that multimillion decision against you and honestly, the situation is as contrived as the 'social experiments' presented earlier; I specifically stated that the chance of getting another job was next to impossible.

This is why only fools are heroes—because you never know when some lunatic will come along with a sadistic choice.

This was on CNN last night. Absolutely sickening.

I get the feeling this is more a case of the bystander effect than people being afraid to help. When you have so many people around, they're likely to think "Well, that's someone else's problem."

Kitty Genovese - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia is a good example of this. It's not that they're heartless bastards who didn't want to stop whatever they were doing to help, they just didn't think it was something they had to deal with. And that was in 1964, so it's not a problem with modern society.

Here in Wisconsin we have a Good Samaritan Law.

"Any person who renders emergency care at the scene of any emergency or accident in good faith shall be immune from civil liability for his or her acts or omissions in rendering such emergency care. This immunity does not extend when employees trained in health care or health care professionals render emergency care for compensation and within the scope of their usual and customary employment or practice at a hospital or other institution equipped with hospital facilities, at the scene of any emergency or accident, en route to a hospital or other institution equipped with hospital facilities or at a physician's office."

There are many other states that have similar laws.
