It could be argued that putting up a fight, even one that doesn't do much, is better than bending to their will.
The bigger problem is that for all the talk of lowering taxes and reducing government, Republicans never seem to do that. Hell, how much of a debt does every man woman and child in the country owe now, thanks to Bush's war? I'm not really a huge fan of history, so correct me if I'm wrong, but the economy and government (government budget, mainly) were doing a lot better in the 90s.
Also, socialist healthcare has a lot in common with democracy. It relies on people to not be idiots, that people will generally do good. It relies on the government to not be corrupt and incapable. Most modern countries have it in some form or another. And even though it has a helluva lot of flaws and problems, it's still better than the alternatives.
