"Emo" is not sidebangs, tight pants, and male vocalists who sing like little girls about their failed relationships. "Emo" is not the use of diluted, meaningless metaphors and similes such as "My arms are like pinecones," and most definitely is not the rampant use of words such as "autumn," "heart," "knife," "bleeding," "leaves," and "razorblade."

"Emo" is "Emotive Hardcore" which was started by Rites of Spring. Yet somehow, people decided that "emo" meant "emotional," which is obviously bullshit, as 99% of bands make music to illicit emotion, which would make "emotional" a completely all-encompassing genre from classical to opera to pop to rap.

I dare you, name a band that *doesn't* have emotion in their lyrics.

Oh? you mean like how the Jesus never taught once that you had to walk the straight and narrow path to get to heaven? About how he said he was the way to heaven not works or the law?

But people still attack Christians for saying and believing that they are "Holier than thou" and you have to be like them to get to heaven.... Look its gonna happen, get over it.

Most christians nowadays DO believe you have to walk the straight and narrow path now because they don't understand nor care what Jesus taught, So its ok to generally say that Christianity is a cult but the emo cult has no negative attributes to it whatsoever?

And sorry, I know you're not the one who said that about Christianity its just I only know how to Quote one person when typing with the wii :p

and again I am not Saying "Emo people all kill themselves" but what I am saying, yes this trend does seem to cause negative and depressing things to people, especially Children.

If you are an emo and I meet you, am I donna just judge you and assume you are suicidal and gonna cut yourself? Of course not.

If you Kill yourself and you follow that trend, am I gonna be suprised? Probably not.

    Edit:

Sorry, just read TGM post, I agree with you 100%. those Parents should have paid more close attention but let me ask you this:

What if they would have tried to make her stop with that mess and tried to be better parents, and then they were jumped on for trying to "conform"(sp?) their child and wouldn't let her be original?

Don't you just hate those people who name their characters after other games like Devil may Cry and animes like Trigun? ^^

      You're humorous.
In the moonlight, your face it glows.. like a thousand diamonds, I suppose.
And your hair flows like.. The ocean breeze...
Not a million fights could make me hate you, you’re invincible.
      Yeah, It’s true.
It’s in your eyes, where I find peace.

Sorry, I don't know how to word a reply to someone whose definition for "emo" is entirely inaccurate.

          "You're humorous." seemed fitting.

It has nothing to do with making anyone conform. I never stated that listening to emo music was bad or dressing the way they do is bad. I never said that all that behavior had to stop. I am so far from being a conformist its not even funny. I'm a grandmother that drives a Harley, plays/collects video games/systems, has tattoos, loves cars and motorcycles, builds computers, etc. Sound like the majority of granny's you know? Probably not. It's also a point I stress to parents about their children, trying to force them to stop a behavior isn't what I'm going to try and accomplish. More often than not, my end goal is to get the parents to be..........well.........PARENTS. Now IF everything goes right and in the end there is a degree of success, the child usually doesn't want to listen to the music anymore (as I said a person is drawn to it because of their emotional/mental state and if that improves its natural to not want that interaction any longer), dress that way, etc. No one forces them, they choose their own path.

I see what you mean, and I am sorry if it came out as if i was trying to be argumentive. I meant that question literally.

I really should have worded it better. What I am basically asking is what can a parent do wants gone so far? The parent will most likely to be attacked for trying if they are being a conformist or not.

BTW tipsy, I didnt mean to come off rude, I just meant thats not the first time I have heard that. ^^ Also, study the trend today, I dont care what "emo" came from or what it was originally, this is what it is now, just look at the girl. Maybe we should name this specific trend something else.

Lastly: it really sucks typing with a wii remote :p

The job of a parent isn't to tell their kid what to do. It's to teach them how to do it.

                    Re: The Cult of "Emo"!

As far as I'm concerned, if a parent is going to worry about how society percieves him if he saves/tries to save his child's life.......then they should have been sterilized so they couldn't reproduce.

You still haven't said anything to suggest that 'emo tendencies' cause depression for others. You refer to the article, but as mentioned those only tell half truths. Even if they were honest and told everything they knew they still don't know what was going on in the mind of this girl. Only she knew. I know I wasn't exactly open with sharing things with my parents. Ask either of them or any past teachers I've had and none will say they noticed any obvious signs of depression. It was a total cover up.

I never said it is the seed nor the beginning, please people read the whole thread:

I did acknowledge the fact that depression causes self-abusement. (People use self-abusement and suicide to cope or end the depression)

but think of the EMO trend as a.....fertilizer. I would explain more but I g2g
                        You did say however:

It is logical to deduce that this emo trend (no matter if you speak of the music, the clothes, et.) seems to cause self-abusing and suicidal tendencies, or atleast, makes it more likely to occur in people's head.
Which is a blatant and total fallacy.

And for the record I'm more of a slacker/metalhead then anything.

Honestly, I'm as far from emo as you can get, but people keep saying some of the bands I listen to are emo. Ironically these bands are ones that sing about how Life isn't that bad and things are worth living. >_>

It's just a lot of misconceptions all around and a new trend that the last generations, which I find myself becoming more and more a member of just don't "get". The best comparison I can make is when Judas Priest was put on trial for allegedly causing two kids to commit suicide...when anyone who listens to their music knows that they celebrate living life to the fullest.
