  • Looking for a new body

For use in about 50 years ... What do you think the odds are that at that time I'll be able to use my retirement money to buy a prosthetic body? A Motoko Kusanagi would be great but heck I'd settle for a Jameson.

Not that this is a pressing concern for me yet or anything but I'm not exactly looking forward to the idea of dying, moreso now that I have a family and things I want to accomplish with my life. On the other hand, my body is already pretty crappy. I mean, I'm in pretty good health and everything, but I have this depression problem that I believe is physiological—very hard time focusing my thoughts and willpower, no energy all the time despite the fact that I eat pretty well and exercise. The idea of having a body that's decreasingly able to carry out what commands I can muster for it on top of that is ... well not terrifying but it seems pretty unlivable. I mean, I have a hard enough time hauling my corpse out of bed and being productive at 26. What's it going to be like when I'm 76?

Well, i think and hope in 50 years they perfect cloning and make it legal for human cloning without any protesters, human rights yadda yadda yadda. Or we could go the ironman route and perfefct a mini arc reactor that can sustain life or slow down aging... but thats all fiction.

I'm pretty sure in 50 years we'll have something to that effect...

I'm sure you'll be more amenable to it in 50 years. Heck, your kid will be 50 by then.

Bio-Android like Melfina or Borg implants I see for the future along with Ghost In the Shell prosthetics.

Looking at the title I thought you were looking for a new gf.

Edit > Oh yeah, topic... yep I'd love having some kind of gene therapy so I didn't have to dispóse of this body but actually fix it and correct any genetical problems with it. Brain transplant on a new cloned body would be too messy for me. XD

Ghost in The Shell prosthetic bodies would be amazing, and in all honesty, I would probably follow suit and sign up for the military so that I might gain an elite frame. Active camo with a reinforced body makes me have seizures of pleasure.

To be completely honest though, I don't see anything to such a degree happen for a very long time, certainly after we all pass from this world and dissolve into dust. The tides of science tear across the landscape giving birth to advances and marvels the world over, unfortunately the pace, while blindingly fast, does not leap ahead on such epic scales as we would desire. To offer such an opportunity would require that we first create a fully functional robotic frame, learn to either remove the brain while keeping it alive or transfer a complete functional cyberized map of the brain to working circuitry or a mimicking system. Next would follow with the painstaking ordeal of relaying the messages sent from the brain, or artificial brain to the prosthetic body and allowing for feedback and control. The sheer level of complication in the advancement process makes me crave the research to come, but brings intimidation with the reality of all things. Oh, the joys of a dream.

Within 50 years, life expectancy will probably go way up. No idea if it will be by transferring brain activity to machines, a cure for aging, or what, though.

                      I think I prefer:

                      Galaxy Song lyrics

Whenever life get you down, Mrs. Brown,

And things seem hard or tough.

And people are stupid, obnoxious or daft,

And you feel that you've had quite enu-hu-hu-huuuuff!

                      Just - re-member that you're standing on a planet that's evolving

and revolving at 900 miles an hour,

It's orbiting at 19 miles a second, so it's reckoned,

the sun that is the source of all our power.

The Sun and you and me, and all the stars that we can see,

are moving at a million miles a day,

In the outer spiral arm, at 40,000 miles an hour,

of the Galaxy we call the Milky Way.

Our Galaxy itself contains 100 billion stars,

                      it's 100,000 light-years side-to-side,

It bulges in the middle, 16,000 light-years thick,

but out by us it's just 3000 light-years wide.

                      We're 30,000 light-years from galactic central point,

we go round every 200 million years,

And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions

in this amazing and expanding universe.

The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding,

in all of the directions it can whizz,

As fast as it can go, at the speed of light you know,

twelve million miles a minute, and that's the fastest speed there is.

So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure,

how amazingly unlikely is your birth,

And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space,

because there's bugger all down here on Earth.

Those lyrics remind me of this particular song, though it's different:

Funny you should mention new bodies, I am reading a sci-fi book series by Peter F Hamilton where the population can pay for "rejuvination" where they grow a clone of you but it is grown to by around the age of 18, then they implant your thoughts etc into this so you carry on living your life in another body as if nothigns happened, you are just much younger and healthier etc.

Sounds great to me and you can get "enhancements" added to your clone before you "move in"
