Re: Clinton wins Indiana, Obama North Carolina. Clinton cancels tommorow's appointmen

There's a lot of people calling for her to call it quits. It could hurt the Dem party if she drags it to the DNC. Supposedly, a lot of staunch supporters for each candidate said they'll vote for McCain if their candidate doesn't get it. Ofcourse a lot of people say that each election and far fewer actually follow through.

Re: Clinton wins Indiana, Obama North Carolina. Clinton cancels tommorow's appointmen

On Real Time with Bill Maher a few weeks ago, he had someone out on the streets asking people what they would do if their Dem candidate didn't get the nomination. No one said "I'd vote for McCain." One woman actually said "What idiot would vote for the other party out of spite?"

Not a comprehensive sample, obviously, but I tend to feel that this is the way most people really feel about things.

It's not as though McCain fans would have voted for Clinton or Obama if one of the other GOP folks had won out.

Really, Murph? Only an idiot... I mean, really? C'mon man, put yourself in the shoes of a first time democratic voter, or an independent, or even a Republican that crossed party lines this election because they didn't like Iraq or something. This is your first vote on the democratic party ticket. You've followed Obama so far, and the party just decided to seat all of FL and MI, then the super delegates backed Hillary. Obama was ahead, but now he's behind and loses. The game just fundamentally changed on you at the home stretch. You were at the finals of Wimbledon, and the refs came out and suggested that you should play the last game as badminton instead of tennis just to make it interesting.

You're going to see this as a pretty big betrayal. The party won't have just peed on you, they pretty much started tea bagging you afterwards.

When we started this game, everyone agreed that FL and MI weren't going to count. No one campaigned in either place, Obama took himself off the ballot in MI. The super delegates were in no way going to decide the race either way. Half of them pledged not to contradict the popular vote no matter where it went. If that changes now? Who knows...

The 2000 election was the 2nd time I've voted for president. Based on how that turned out, I know people who have never voted since and have vowed not to change that stance. I almost didn't vote in the 2004 election, myself. I still have friends that argue that Diebold decides who's going to be president and the rest of us are stuck with it. Before these two primaries you had people who would not under any circumstances vote for the other guy in the popular election if their candidate lost. If the game fundamentally shifts like this I don't think you're going to see that total go down, it's going to skyrocket instead.

True. I can't remember who did the survey, it just happened to be higher numbers than it has been in the past. And like I said, when election day comes the vast majority of people who said they would vote for the other party end up recanting anyway.
But, if she does drag this out to the DNC it could potentially hurt their votes from independents.

All it feels like is that no matter who wins, we're screwed.

Or someone that sees no difference between Clinton and McCain? Or Obama and McCain, really.

Either way, November 4th is going to be a depressing day.

I don't care for any of the candidates this year. I've typically voted Republican my entire voting life, but I just don't know who to go for this time. I'm not sure I'd be able to rest easy with any of them in office.

I think those people were pretty well covered under "idiot".

If you want to be charitable you might say that some are just really, really, REALLY ignorant. But if you can't see a difference between people who want to end the war and Mr. Stay for 100 Years, then you're just not paying attention, at best.

Returning to the original thread: George McGovern (a WWII veteran known for his vehement opposition to the Vietnam War and for failing to unseat Nixon after being the victim of Watergate and before Watergate was exposed) just switched from supporting Clinton, to supporting Obama and calling on Clinton to concede.

As for the numbers, Obama needs 37% and Clinton needs 69%. It is over.

If you think Hillary will end the war, or that Obama has a different foreign policy agenda, you're obviously not paying attention.

The best I could hope for, from the three candidates, is Obama might stop the bulk of combat operations and remove a lot of troops from Iraq. But it's sounding like he'll just redeploy them to Afghanistan and Africa. It's certainly not going to save us the $200 billion+ he wants to spend.
