  • A question for the nonreligious

Simply enough, do you still use phrases like "Oh (my) god" or "Goddammit", whether or not you believe in whatever deity said word/phrase is concerning? Please try not to make the thread too for/against religion, just keep it to what you need to to explain your opinion on the situation.

Personally, for awhile, I thought it was as silly as saying "GREAT ZEUS!", and tried not to, but then I realized that it annoyed the religious far more than anything else.

I'm not sure I would call "Oh my god" and "god damnit" religious expressions.

they're religious in origin and nature.

If you say so. I consider them to be nothing more than expletives. They may be religious in origin, but not in nature.

Yes I do! I'll tell you why, its common lingo! Just because I don't believe in god doesn't mean I can't say "oh my god"

Just because people are straight doesn't keep them from saying "your so gay" to other straight people. Its just lingo

Yes, "god damnit" and Oh god" remain two of my more commonly used expressions, despite my Agnostic denomination.

I realize it makes me a bit of a hypocrite, but I find comfort in that I'm slowly weaning myself off these expressions; I use them less and less these days.

Re: A question for the nonreligious

I voted yes, but don't use expletives of a religion that exists today.

I say stuff from the fictional universe of Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000.

"By The Emperor!" "Emperor's Blood!" etc.

I also agree that it's common lingo. Rather hard to not say things like that when everyone in your country (including the entertainment industry) uses them on a regular basis.

edit: If you are curious to why I say those, send PM

Re: A question for the nonreligious

Never really used those expressions much, then again our expletives etc here in the Uk can be different.

The expression "Oh my god", is usually translated in many ways... for example "for fucks sake", "What the fuck?", "oh Bollocks",

The expression "Jesus", is usually refered to as "bloody hell", "shit", "munchkin", "muppet", "you egit" etc etc.

I have never used Oh my god or Jesus as their has always been other words that express it in a better manner.

It of course differes depneding on teh region etc. you live in.

Actually Jarre going to completely disagree with you, I don't think this one is a UK/US thing at all.

Jesus, Jesus Christ, Oh god, all very common for me to hear and to say and I live very near you. I don't think I've ever hear anyone say munchkin, Muppet or you egit and bloody hell is fairly rare.

I think I would have a hard time not being disgusted with myself if I put any effort into making sure the things I say when I drop something on my foot are theologically accurate.

As I said it depends on the region you are in, it also depends on your upbringing, way you use language etc. Growing up in a boarding hosue i picked things up from many different cultures and regions which I use, but I can;t remember ever using oh my god or jesus, I tend to sue the others in place without even thinking.

You should be well aware of the differences here in the UK, Yorkshire is extreemly different to Lincolnshire, liekwise Brummies, Mancurians, scousers, glaswegions, southerns etc. in just a small area.
