  • Hillary Clinton's Derby pick comes in second, collapses, and is killed.

Also, one of Obama's was first place. Named Big Brown.

    This is absolutely hilarious.

(I haven't seen any news stories officially reporting this yet, but you can piece it together easily from Kentucky Derby - Google News )

The comparison is funny, but I have a hard time laughing about the horse dying.

    This is interesting:
When asked how a horse could finish a race, then break down when being pulled up, Bramlage said: "That's not terribly unheard of. Horses really tire. They are taking a lot of load on their skeleton because their muscles are fatigued. So we will occasionally see a catastrophic injury after the wire when the horse is slowing down. The difficult thing to explain with her is it's so far after the wire, and she was easing down like you'd like to see a horse slow down by that point. And then all of a sudden, it goes over the brink in both legs. I don't have an explanation for it because I have no background to draw on."
Seems she broke both front ankles after finishing the race.

So inhumane. This is mankind near its lowest point.

Nobody is laughing the the horse's death. We're laughing at the parallels between this race and the presidential one.

Oh yes, raising animals and giving them a harsh life (although one that's still probably better than they ever would've received in nature) is the worst thing humanity has ever done. Not the whole killing millions of innocent people thing, not the mass murder of ourselves based on who someone had for a parent, not the abuse, torture, and killing of countless animals merely to feed those of us who can afford to waste food that could also be going towards feeding our poor. No, the low point for mankind is making animals run really fast.

anyway, can we please keep this to laughing about the election, instead of how horrible humanity is? I'd love to talk in another thread on that if you make one. But this would've been funny even if the horse hadn't been injured.

I don't know anything about horses, but it seems it was the opposite. A broken leg is a more serious injury for a horse than a human. One article describes a similar event with a horse that broke one leg and "battled for his life for eight months." This horse had not one but two compound fractures, where the bones were completely severed and had broken through the skin. A wound like that requires immediate surgery, and even then poses a high threat of infection that would spread to the animal's other bones and lead to a slow, painful death.

Again, I'm not an expert. It seems to me they could've tranquilized it, moved it, treated it, and given it at least a chance at life. But, being the Kentucky Derby, I'm sure the person who made the call was an expert in equine medicine and he decided euthanization was the only option.

I think he means making the horse race to the point where its legs broke in the first place was inhumane.

As a former foster child who spent a great deal of time caring for horses and going to parties with rich people celebrating this race, I have to laugh. Not directly at the horse, but at the general situation. Horse racing fans are ridiculous people.

I find it odd that the pat K.D I picked Barbaro to win. An now this year when I bet I big Belles to place.

2times I bet on the K.D and 2 times my horse has broke its foot or feet and was put down.

At least one of the breaks went through the skin and there was no way they could even stand her up effectively to splint her legs.

The odd thing is, the injury happened a full turn after the race when the horse slowed back up again.

Killing the horse was humane. It's sad, but that's the way it goes for horses. And Racing horses live really comfortable lives, so any concern that it was mistreated for years before being killed on the field are unfounded.

It's pretty sad. A friend who lives down there called me and told me all about it. It really cast a pall over the entire derby.

KD horses get treated far more humanely then many many humans from my understanding.

While I don't much appreciate animal races (my parents have adopted many retired Greyhounds, which are actually some of the nicest, most amazing animals I have ever seen as far as pets go, and knowing what happens to them if they aren't adopted when they are retired makes me a sad panda), I do appreciate the underlying parallel.

So making an analogy between Clinton who's losing the race to a horse who breaks down in a race and dies is funny?

Sorry, I don't see the humor in this.

There wasn't really anything unusual about it. Eight Belles was the only filly in the field and the first one to run since '99. It's not surprising that Hilary would cheer for her. Though, technically she wasn't at the race and I don't think she bet herself. According to ESPN though, Hilary did tell Chelsea to bet on her.

I can see the campaign correlations to a degree, though we typically don't kill the loser of the presidental primaries... hey now... there's an idea.
