  • What's the worst that has happened?

I'm pretty sure everyone here has uttered at some point in their life, "What's the worst that could happen?" This thread is stories from those who have been in the situation one step after uttering that line the proverbial s___ hit the fan. More or less a gripe thread on how the world took notice of your situation and turned it from managable to a disaster. It's days like these I really hate reality.

Step #1 - Last simester during my advanced computer repair course I was logged in at home through the Universities program to take my online midterm, I had a time limit of 2 hours after accessing the program to complete the section, before I started the test I turned to my room mate and uttered "This is simple stuff, what's the worst that could happen?" Well, that one's simple. Both my video card and ram decided to fail. Woo, go me. I went to Staples and found older ram that would be compatable with my computer and an inexpensive video card. Problem fixed, yay.

Step #2 - About two days after my CEET midterm I took a day off work to complete my english midterm (4 hours and 17 pages) which, at the company I was currently employed at was a great, life threatening crime, word of advice, never work for a company that goes red in the face if you take a sick day. I took a break after typing solid for about 3 hours to go get lunch, saved my information on my flash drive and hopped in my car, about four miles away from the University my waterpump blew out in my car throwing coolant and all sort of other things that shouldnt be splashed on the interior of an engine all around the underside of my hood. Ok, I can deal with that. Called my brother to come help me get my car when class was over and hoofed it back to the computer lab to finish my paper minus lunch. Took the care to my mechanic, problem fixed within a week... a week without a car... for a full time college student with a full time job just sucks rocks.

Step #3 - CEET Final, yay! The last test and I'm off to take my A+ certification for computer repair. At home all snuggly with a beer and my keyboard getting ready to take my final... power surge followed by an area blackout that over rode my UPS and shorted out my computers power supply.... I wanted to stab something, this was about 6 weeks after I fixed it the first time. After trying and failing to repair it without going to buy a new power supply I got the great idea to get a best buy credit card and snag a new computer, alright! That'll work, I'll go with that plan. Got the new computer home, a new UPS and by the time all of that was done I could start my final. Woot! 99% on my test.

    (Almost forgot this one)
Step #4! - Playing FFXI with my girlfriend one weekend, I was on my backup computer, she was testing the new one out and loved it, boom! crash! the lightning flashed! And my brand new computer up and died... wft over? Took it back to best buy, and told them they can keep the p.o.s. The best part about how this one commited seppuku is it actually released all of the information on the hard drive while she was in the middle of FFXI, seriously, decided to commit suicide and let go of the programming that recognized windows Vista. Got a new computer, it's running fine and I've tricked Vista into thinking that it's XP except it still takes an ungodly amount of resources to even idle.

Step #5 - Today is my math final, I've studied and worked harder at this class than I have any other and I'm still scraping by with a passing grade unless I fail horribly on my final I 'should' be taking in 2 hours. See that? I quoted the 'should' part. Wanna know why? Because my car just fucking died. I hope its the starter, it might be the transmission, but the main point is it's a 2002 chryslter seabring... and this shit shouldnt be happening to it... and now I'm waiting for a towtruck at work so I can go to the dealership and find out how much I'm going to be raped on the price.

The end? Give me a month, I'll letcha know.

Has anyone else had a horrible run of luck like this? The time frame of all of this is about 5 months, and I would be totaly screwed if I wasn't pulling the G.I. Bill for school, the great part about that is tey give me about $1,400/month for school and my tuition costs $1,700, the bad part about it is you have to join the army and finish your contract (2 years, go me.)

When I was 13 I was in my taekwando class sparring with 1 huge guy. Our teacher didn't have us wear any protective gears.

I got spinning heel kick in my left eye. It broke my cheek bone, the bone behind my eye socket and my cynus. My left eye was pushed deep into my cheek. I spent 6 months in hospital, had to have 2 surgery and over 3 years to recover to my full health.

The doctor said that if by bones didn't break, my eye would had been squashed and I'd lost my left eye forever.

Or the bone could have been pushed through into my brain and damage it. I think it did to some extent tho, I haven't gained any height since that day. At all.

*Blink* ... Dude, you make me scared about having to go to a university. If all that stuff ever happened to me, I'd break down into a brawling rage.

Can't exactly recall anything at the moment, I'll see what my memory can conjure up later.

My first working job as a firefighter (when I was working as one before they made us redundant... Modernisation MY ASS)

It was a working job, 2 terraced houses, PR job (persons reported) we arrive at the scene, flame billowing from the first floor front bedroom, a very distressed women shouting her kids were in there (4 kids) being a probie I was set to work on the outside with a jet to push abck the flames to reduce the heat in the building to make the conditions more bareable for the 2 teams of 2 guys in BA going in. We made pumps 6 and the 2 teams went in, one through the back window of the first floor and 1 through the front door.

To cut a long story short, the 4 kids were brought out 2 with 2nd degree burns (they survived but are scared for life), 2 dead. My first ever working job and there were 2 fatalities, it hit home how difficult the firefighters job was not just physically but emotionally. I got my nickname "Done it" as all probies in teh uk get called if they have a fatal on their first duty meaning been their, done it. It stayed till 2 years back when I passed my EFAD driving and drove the appliance where my new nickname "Maniac" was born

I do miss the job as a long time ago I did mention here about our retained pump being removed (part time firefighters = retained which is what I was) thanks to modernisation or how we like to call it government cost cutting.

Four nights ago was working an Over Time. Get a call Car Accident on 95N.

Wake up grumpy as hell, since it was 3:04 am, get in the bus head out to 95. We arrive, car coming wrong way on the on-ramp hit a motor cycle . 5 people all DOA (dead on arrival), all under the age of 21, the biker was in 2. the four kids in the car weren't recognizable. The part that makes it so messed up was not the fact of all the dead kids, because sadly its something I see on a weekly basis. We have a very good relationship, with the cops and the hospitals in the area they got the tox screens back out of the 5 people involved only the driver of the car was under the influence of Alc, its sad to see 5 young lives thrown away because no one would step in and drive. first over time with new department what's the worst that can happen.

Re: What's the worst that has happened?

It was a sorry scene I had to deal with during the short 5 years in the fireservice sevv, you never get used to it. If people saw what we saw on a regular basis, it may put them off drinking and driving, excessive speeding and showing off to friends.

No matter how shocking the message is though you still get wankers who think thier god and screw up the lives of other people because of their careless attitudes.

The worst job I attended was an accident on a towns bypass 30 miles north of us (we were called in as the 10th pump with rescue gear to assist) 3 cars 1 lorry and 1 school bus, 7 fatalities, (5 children), 46 serious injuries. The worst accident the region had had in 10 years, required a total of 3 rescue tenders, 12 fire engines, 7 police vehicles and a fleet of 20 ambulances and the ambucopter. The driver of the lorry that caused it fell asleep at the wheel. A school lost 5 kids and had 46 kids off due to their injuries for between 3 weeks and 6 months and 27 kids who survived with minor inuries had to ahve intensive counselling, as did all the emergency services that attended.

My collegue left the fire service due to stress and depression, one of the kids had been decapitated, he found the head.

My worst year that I ever had was 1998. My 16 year cousin killed himself, my grandmother and grandfather died, My 40 year uncle died in a La Fitness because the staff was to dumb to call 911 and waited a good 10 mins before they called, and last but not least my house burnt down from a Mr. Coffee pot.

We wear cages now, but they're optional.

All of my pets have died on or before my birthday during their old age. It's not as bad as some of the other stories here, but hey, this isn't a competition, right?

Physically, fracturing my rib. That junk HURTS.

Emotionally, that would be having a crush on this one girl when I was really young, and suddenly having to move away due to divorce before I could be over it. I don't think I ever got quite over it, since. That junk also hurts.

Although, I sympathize with Jei, having taken a little Tae Kwon Do myself. I have never seen anything as bad as he had, but, without protective gear, imagining his story just made me cringe.

Dear, I could tell you about runs of bad luck I've had that would make you wonder why I had not dug a hole, crawled in it, and died by now. LOL Everyone goes through these times and to each of us ours is by far the worst. LOL One thing to remember is that in the end we always learn something from these road bumps in our lives. It can be negative or it can be positive, it's just how you choose to look at it. ^^

I'd have to say my most awesomeness week ever was this one:

Wednesday: Girl I had saved $1k so far towards buying an engagement ring leaves me for one of my (I thought)best friends, a guy I saved from committing suicide when the woman he planned to marry did the same thing to him 2 years prior.

                        Friday: Fired from work.

Saturday: In a wreck that totals my car.

Sunday: I consumed a full bottle of Jameson, dislocated my finger punching various inanimate objects, and nearly destroyed my bedroom.

Although every cloud of shit has its silver lining...

Monday: I wake up, realize 4 things:

                        1) The whore who left me was the daughter of a grower, the day before it went down he gave me a pound of weed.

                        2) I have over $1k disposable cash that did not get spent on a whore.

                        3) I have no job that I need to go to.

                        4) I play an MMO, and Group II merits were just released.

I sat down, smoked the fucking shit out of myself, and meritted like a psycho. Had full Group II's in 2 days, went on to cap RDM merits and gear the shit out of my RDM over the next few weeks. Pot and money ran out, got a new job, got a new (and infinitely better)girl, and now I have a pretty sweet ass RDM and g/f to come home to.

I had to send the cat I've had since third grade to go live with my aunt. She's coming up on 20 and I know I'd be a fucking wreck for a good long while if I came home and found her dead, so I chickened out and sent her away to avoid it.

I would've been fucked up for life if I had seen that. :/ That shit would mess with me until I cracked, probably.

I think I'd break down and cry if I ever saw an accident as horrible as the one you described Jarre.

Relating to the topic, two years years ago, my dad had come up from BC (British Columbia) to Alberta, where I live. (About a 7 hour drive from where he lived) He was having some blood problems, and trouble remembering things, such as street addresses and such, but he made his way to our house and stayed for a week, and everything was fine. My mom finally found out that the divorce went through, and both of them seemed fairly happy. (My mom and dad were still best friends, divorce or not)

About 3 months later, we get a call from him, telling us that his stomach is filling with fluid, and that he is going to go get it pumped. I didn't think anything of it, he didn't really seem all too worried, and so I thought "What's the worst that could happen?" Believing that it was nothing serious. Three days after we get that call, we recieve another call from the hospital, telling us that he only has about a week to live. We rushed down to BC to say our goodbyes, only to find that, after we arrived, he had died only 2 hours prior.

I think the thing that hurt most was the fact that we never got to say goodbye. I've come to a conclusion as well; if you ever find the urge to say "What's the worst that could happen?" Don't say it. Something worse can always, and usually does happen.

And who said we didn't? we all got counselling for a month after that from the brigade, we may have been big burly rush in when your rushing out firefighters, but we still have feelings and emotions, when kids are involved its the worst ones.

Sometimes I'm glad I'm not in the job when you had to deal with thigns like that, but other times there were so many advantages of the job and good feelings and emotions.

Telera, my collegue who found the head is still traumatised, it broke up his marridge, hes never been able to hold a job and his mental state has been severely affected. The only consolation is the extra money he gets from the fire service national benevolant fund to help him live and fund his strong medication hes reliant on now.
