Re: Reverand Jeremiah Wright @ NAACP
It'll be like the time Dad inadvertently taught me 'son of a bitch' around the age of 2. And then my cousin and his super-religious-type mom came over. :D
He stole my toy, so I took a toy hammer, hit him in the head and screamed "SON OF A BITCH!!"
Yeah, that was great."If you keep me waiting much longer, it damn well better be the end of the Galaxy." ~ Kaidan

Re: Reverand Jeremiah Wright @ NAACP
Kinda reminds me of the time my grandpa came to visit, noticed I liked computers, and asked if I wanted to work with them. To which I replied something to the effect of computers being women's work. Except I don't actually remember it, and nobody taught me to say that.
Either way, it's more funny when you consider that he worked at IBM for many, many years.

And what of the Native American tribes complete wiped out by diseases the settlers and thier slaves brought over here? Should we hold the decendants of those settlers and thier slaves accountable?

Funny I can draw some insight from FFXI to relate to this, but I'm going to. I'm going to spoil part of ToA and you're gonna have to deal with it.
The capital of West Aht'Urghan sit upon a kingdom the Corsairs decended from. Luzaf wanted revenge and sought out Odin to quench his need for revenge. But over the course of the story, Luzaf realizes that his people have moved on. Not only this, but that his people live under the rule of someone who is just and his decendants love dearly?
In seeking revenge, he would have only hurt the people he had sworn do to justice for. His decendants, such as Qutada, aren't at war with the Empire, either. They know they can't bring back thier kingdom - they just want the past and the truth acknowledged. They don't like the Empire, but the love the people of Al'Zhabi, accepting the past would be for everyone's benefit so they could move on and look to the future.
To want something more than that is self-serving. There isn't one race on this planet that hasn't been wronged by another in some way. There are differences in living and subcultures within the the races as well that have brought them to war within. Religions have cause war, hell even Science has done that.
It all starts when one guy has a idea or belief and thinks that makes him better than other people or a group of people special. That is the attitude that needs to be lived down, I don't care who you are - if you talk about equality in one breath and reparations for something over a century in the past in the other, you're full of shit.

Re: Reverand Jeremiah Wright @ NAACP
I agree with most of your post, but when the hell has science ever caused a war? "I'm sorry, but my experiments reveal that there actually is no luminiferous aether, and therefore I'm going to have to kill you aether-believing scumbags"? And don't get me started on my grudge against the anti-continental-drifters...
Now, if you *are* fighting a war, science can make you more effective at killing people. That's certainly true. But that's because science can make you more effective at *everything*, including feeding the hungry, preventing deadly diseases and helping people recover from otherwise life-threatening injuries. The fact that you can also use some of those same scientific discoveries to *cause* deadly diseases and life-threatening injuries isn't really science's fault, any more than it's a car's fault that you can run someone over with it.
As for Wright... it turns out that some of the things that right-wing professional liars said about him weren't actually true! How utterly unexpected and unprecedented!! Nobody could have predicted that people with the absolute unblemished integrity of Drudge, Limbaugh or O'Reilly would say untrue things!!!Defeated: Maat, Divine Might, Fenrir, Kirin, Cactrot Rapido, Xolotl, Diabolos Prime, Kurrea, 9/10 Dynamis Bosses (missing Tav), Promathia, Proto-Ultima, Proto-Omega, 4 Jailers, Apocalypse Nigh, 6/6 Nyzul Bosses

Re: Reverand Jeremiah Wright @ NAACP
I think ignoring them and choosing not to dwell on them are two entirely different things though. It's kind of like something I tried to teach my daughter recently. It seems my grandson likes to play around when drinking. (GASP a child playing!! lol) He's spilled his milk in the past so now every damn time the kid goes to drink something she's doing preemptive yelling. (Alex, do NOT play with that milk. If you play with that milk I'm taking it away and you are getting a time out!) She's even started to do the same yelling at the younger one because of the older one's behavior. I've tried to explain to her that there is no need to dwell on the fact that the child made a couple mistakes in the past. I told her that she needs to give him the room to grow and learn from them and not be berated every time he sits down to drink something. I also said that the little one hasn't done a thing yet and if she keeps that behavior up when he gets older, he's going to have a lot of resentment towards her because of it.
Constantly smashing people's faces for mistakes made in the past doesn't end up teaching them anything but more resentment and anger. It's ok to make a point but there is a saying about beating a dead horse...Originally posted by FebaBut I mean I do not mind a good looking man so long as I do not have to view his penis.Originally posted by TaskmageGod I hate my periods. Good point, TGM. Learning from past mistakes is one thing, but constantly bringing up past mistakes in an attempt to shame someone or elicit some sort of reaction is another.

What if MLK Jr. had only concentrated on his past of prejudice and racism instead of pointing an entire generation in the right direction to equality?
PLD75 DRK60 lots of other levels.

That said, Wright was pretty off base with his comments today. Pretty unfortunate given his performance last night. When will these people (Wright, Jackson, Sharpton etc) learn that there's no fucking place for negativity when you're trying to preach about bettering ourselves and our relations with each other?
ENOUGH OF THIS WHITES VS BLACK SHIT! It happened in the past, it was bad, we get it. Time to bury the hatchet and move on. There's no reason that we can't discuss this in a civil, respectful manner. While I'm at it, enough of the Double-standard with the "N" word too. That's a prime example of what's wrong with America today, and why all the shit with the civil rights movement still lingers. you can't have your cake and it eat too; either it's OK to say the word or it isn't.

Also, the media should be absolutely ashamed of themselves, especially whatever asshole it was who recorded that sound bite. Now, I don't know if the person recording it was there for the whole sermon (because if they were, this has been a deliberate, maybe even racist endeavor on his or her part) but Rev. Wright was actually quoting the ambassador to Iraq when he was talking about the chickens coming home to roost. That entire sound bite was taken completely out of context.
Some of what he's said recently was a bit inflamatory, but this guy is not the hateful, decisive person the media would have you believe. Oh yah and he served in the Marines for 6 years too.
