Re: Warcraft players to carry Olympic torch.
Note: Warcraft III, not World of Warcraft.
If it were World of Warcraft, we'd probably all be stinky jealous and angry.
I hope they're not going to fall over the Nine million bicycles...Last edited by Kittyneko; 04-21-2008, 05:48 AM.http://www.ffxiah.com/player.php?id=953347

This is still interesting and brings up a point: are gamers really athletes in the purest sense of the word? Does having really strong fingers and thumbs translate into being a physical performer. I always considered it a bit more like say chess or checkers, you don't usually see Kasparov or his competitors carrying a torch around, usually its someone like Carl Lewis. I suppose you can make the argument, but it just seems odd. What is an athlete really if gamers are now athletes?

Re: Warcraft players to carry Olympic torch.
I think people assume gamers are not athletes, rather than if a gamer is an athlete. There have been countless occasions where someone finds out I play video games and they seem confused that I am not grossly overweight. People do have different lifestyles that do not revolve around eating greasy food and sitting at a desk all day (though it can be fun once in awhile).
Wonderful to see some recognition for gamers, perhaps we will see someone from FFXI climb mount Everest!

Re: Warcraft players to carry Olympic torch.
Well, yes. My point after I unsuccessfully tried to tease Feba was to inquire what about these two made them athletes. Remember, the story really only tells us that they're professional gamers. It doesn't read "Player1, (who happens to be a world class athlete and an Olympic qualifier in the 100 meter dash), and Player2, (who took silver at the Nagano games in figure skating), both carried the olympic torch. Incidentally they are both professional gamers as well." Instead it reads: "Player1 and Player2, professional gamers from X, carried the Olympic torch...".
What is it about gaming that makes you an athlete? Where is the physical prowess? I mentioned Kasparov before, does being good at chess make you an athlete? Where's the line?
Working out is not enough. I work out by taking Karate. I have my 2nd brown in SKK. I don't consider myself an athlete, though, even if I am pretty good at sparring in belt reviews and tournaments. If I'm competing, it's because I want the next belt, or want to be considered trained enough to go to the next belt review. I do this for the same reason some of the rest of you jog, or bike, or swim. I wanted a little exercise, and this seemed like a fun way to do it. Working out doesn't make you an athlete. Something else is needed. Can you prove that something else by being a professional gamer?
And if I'm right, and you can't be an athlete solely by being a professional gamer, what does society expect to gain by claiming professional gamers are indeed athletes?
