I am sorry to hear about your mother's employment problems, and hopefully everything will work out for the best.

As far as the math portion of your G.E.D. goes, feel free to ask me any questions you may have. I usually excel when it comes to numbers, and I am more than willing to go over what might be holding you back from getting the remaining points. Actually, I have been helping a friend of mine with studying for his G.E.D. and he also had some problems with the math portion of the exam.

I like Florida, there are just a lot of assholes here...and you want to live in the rockies but not Florida? Something is wrong with that picture, there is less to do there then there is here!

There's freaking snow in the winter there. That's good enough for me.

That's because she'd be supporting a family of three on a little more than $13,000 a year, which is nearing impossible in this country and county. If you can't support a family of three or four on $40k a year while making a few sacrafices you've bought yourself into an expensive lifestyle.

Btw, my childhood wasn't awesome. Losing $80k out of your $120k a year sucks hard, but it isn't as terrible as he makes it out to be when people are making due making much less. You might just have to settle for a Yaris instead of that H3.

Living somewhere that gets a decent amount of snow in the winter, I actually find myself enjoying it. If you have the means, there are many enjoyable things to do in the snow!

Not being funny but you don't need grades to work in a fast food restaurant or at a supermarket, even if its part time doing 14 hours a week, any money you can make is great.

To be honest you have been living a life of luxury and yeah, shit happens. This is the real world where you have to realise you can't have everything and bleed off your parents all the time. Do some work to help pay some rent help with the bills etc and pay for your own cell phone. By how you have put the message across you are over 16 which means you can work, even if its a couple of evenings and the weekend. same with your brothers if they are old enough.

The fact is people these days are taking things for granted, over there in the US everything is dirt cheap Here in the UK we pay 3 times more than you do for everything. My GF and I earn between us $56k. we can survive on that and that’s with paying the equivalent of $6.42 a gallon of gas for the car, a mortgage costing us $1200 a month for a 2 bedroomed house of 75sqm council tax, Nation health service contribution, television licence, gym membership (for health reasons) etc etc..

The fact is we cut down on alot of things. We only eat or get a takeaway on special occasions. we don’t have cable or satellite TV just the standard freeview channels we have here in the UK. I have the lowest tariff on my cell phone, I own a small car that is efficient on fuel, I don’t go out and buy a new computer or console that has just come out, I cancelled my FFXI membership, we both only buy new clothes and shoes when our old ones need replacing, we buy food that is healthy and doesn't cost the earth, we also cook everything and hardly buy pre packed food, i.e. we cook everything from scratch. We also cut down luxuries like crisps, chocolate and biscuits / cakes etc. That we it improves our diet and lowers our shopping bills. we have thermostats on all radiators and we time them so their only on hot in rooms we use i.e. evenings in bedrooms to warm them up before we go to bed, and in the living room during the day when its in use, we also turn off lights when not required or in that room and appliances like TV, computers etc. when not in use to save electricity and the impending bill which the rate charged per KWH goes up each year (electricity cost rose by 20% this year) I drive efficiently i.e. to the speed limit and not thrashing about everywhere and only make journeys if required, I also cycle to work on days I don't need the car for site visits. We wait till we have a full load for the washing machine before using it and never use a drier to dry our clothes, we hang it up outside or in the house.

There is so many things your family can do to save money, the fact is alot of them are so easy to do, yet people don't like to because "its more effort" than if they didn't or not "convenient". Tough, get used to it, its the only way to save and if you get used to it, when you eventually move out, it will help you survive.

Fixed. If a family is making $120k a year and can't afford to cart their lazy son off to a military school where they'll at least force an education on him that means they've either bought into an expensive lifestyle, or they just don't care, which means they don't know it yet but they've bought into an expensive lifestyle.

Next time on "Dak still isn't getting it," Dak thanks Jarre for rambling on about the differences between the UK and the US. Never mind the fact that the cost of living he's referring to is also offset by a rather substantial salary increase. Details are inconsequential!

That's not to say that the OP can't do his part. But this is his parent's issue, really, and it only just happened. People (and by people, I mean Dak) are being awfully fucking judgmental about this situation when all we have is the OP's side of the story.

                      You're ridiculous.

We know virtually nothing beyond what the OP has said about the situation. But that doesn't stop you. You're willing to write an entire saga of bad parenting, extravagant purchases, and a general laissez faire attitude about money in general. Never mind the actual facts, or other extenuating factors. You seem completely fixated on the fact that they were making over 100k, never mind that depending on where they live, that may not be very much at all. His mother is a nurse, and his father makes 40k a year, which means he's hardly some sort of high-powered executive. 40k is less than then many people make right out of college.

It's not like the OP is lamenting that they are going to have to let some of the staff go, or that they'll have to sell their summer home in Southampton. He's saying "Hey, this bad thing happened to our family, and it sucks."

Murphie, if you read it right you'd see that I said it costs 3 times more for things in the Uk than it does in the US, there fore I'd need to earn the equivilent of $60k.

You'd also read that the money they will still earn is enough to survive on if they cut down their life style and I made suggestions on how they could do it to save money. I.e. cut out on luxories, conserve energy, actually do some excersie rather than rely ont ehc ar for everything etc etc.

ok 1) I don't ask them to buy me anything, so don't act like you know me. 2) we are broke because are bills cost so much, not our fault. The Economy is bad at the current moment. 3) I would not join the military even if I could and, I cant because I have a bad foot I cant even walk for that long of a time. (I was tested in high school to see if I could.) 4) One of the places that I said I couldn't work there because I didn't finished high school was a super market, and the other one was fast food. They said, "you cant work here unless you are currently in school, you have your GED, or you have completed highschool."

Get your facts straight before flaming me please.

Also, like I said for the 100,000th time, we don't go out to eat that much, we buy food maybe at least every other 2 months. ITS CALLED BILLS, YOU DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH WE FUCKING PAY FOR SHIT, SO DON'T EVEN ACT LIKE YOU FRICKEN EVEN KNOW MY LIFE. Also buy 2009 in the US, you can only have Satilite TV or cable, so yeah. I have not bought a car yet I don't even drive, plus gas for my parents doesn't even cost that much, and its almost 4$ a gallon in Florida anyway. We have not bought a video game console sense the ps2 came out. All my people, use the same cell phone service as me so its free calling to them, I dont call anyone else. Dude you just need to shut up because you don't know anything about me, my parents, or our life so just shut it. My mom also worked a hour away from her job, but they payed for the gas, all of this shit you keep saying has nothing to do with me, and we do the same shit but we are still broke. Florida fricken sucks when it comes to life because everything cost so damn much in this state.

making 40k a year and living off of that in todays world? Ok some college students make that much money, and they can barely fricken eat, because of there cars, apt bills etc. My brother is in college and makes that much money and we have to help him every single month because he cant afford it. We spend more then 40k a year just on bills alone. We also dont get cable out here, we live in the part of the state ware all they have is fricken DSL and Satilite TV. They dont offer anything else here.

                          DSL Bill: 300$ a month
                          TV Bill: 25$ a month

Which isn't always possible. Again, you're not considering where they live, or what their situation is. Some people have bills they cannot give up, which would be a luxury for other people-- For example, I have high speed internet, you might consider that a luxury, but my mom needs it for remote desktop, voice/video conferences, downloading large files, and so on. You might consider our cellphones a luxury; but we have no landline, and again a phone is needed for business.

The thing is, what seems like a luxurious lifestyle to you could be the bare minimum those people can survive on at the moment. We've been looking to sell our large house (which we've had for around ten years), and our vehicles, but there is a lot that gets in the way of being able to do that. And want to blame us for buying such a large house in the first place? My school was near here! We didn't really have much of a choice. You don't know why they have these huge bills, or what they're trying to do about them.

That's not true at all. The DTV transition is a transition from analog to digital broadcast. Any TV with a digital receiver (which is most of the ones sold in recent years), or any TV hooked up to a digital receiver box (which you can get at very low or free prices through government programs) will get over the air broadcasts just fine. Even if you couldn't still get broadcast TV, you don't really NEED TV service.

yeah, yeah, they could have contracts that they can't afford to keep paying or cancel. Some of the 'fees' companies charge nowadays are obscene.
