Most of them? Probably. Look at how many starving artists (ahem) there were that only became famous (and profitable) after their death.

Most artists have always made money by selling their services instead of their products. Sure, you can point at a big star and their record sales/ticket sales, but that's just a small amount. Look at all the artists that are new, or never became popular; the ones working in clubs and bars.

Now I am sure that im going to be flamed for this but here it goes....
The reason there are copyright laws is because people are greedy and even though that sucks they deserve to get paid for the work they do.

The reason its illegal to put a song you paid for on your ipod is because the artist made that song for a CD and ment for it to be enjoyed in that setting. Putting it on an ipod isn't what it was intended for (im sure your like "wow what a loser" but think of it this way, what if we looked at famous paintings upside down, think the artist would like that?)

The reason that these laws were made is because otherwise, artist wouldn't make music.

The reason it is illegal to copy things is because you bought one copy of the CD, that is to be enjoyed at 1 time by any number of people not multi amounts of people in multi amounts of places. If they want to listen to it at their house and you want to keep your copy they need to get their own simple.

Also I think its a waste of time to argue copyright laws when the fact of the matter is you have to deal with it and if you don't like it make your own music :D!

Nobody is disputing that. Copying a bunch of 0s and 1s in a computer, however, takes no work.

There are two major flaws in that. First of all, it assumes that listening to music on a CD is significantly different or higher quality than listening to it on a dmp, which is just not true. Secondly, it assumes that there are no legal methods for listening to music on a dmp, which again is just not true.

Once again, everybody prior to the 17th century disagrees, as well as everyone who is putting out music free nowadays. Hell, even major bands (NIN, for example) are giving away their music nowadays, and still making tons of money off the venture.

Which does not make sense. Again, why is it illegal for me to send a copy of a song to a friend, but not have them listen to it in the same room with me? Hell, assume that while I send them the copy, I mute my speakers, so I can't hear it either. I'll even pause it! What's the difference, now, when I'm not listening to it and they are, of just sending them the CD; ignoring the time delay?

Anyone looking at it reasonably can see that the line between infringement and legal is so asinine that it shouldn't exist.

I think they do that so that people will be like "omg a band with free music AWESOME I think i'll go buy some of their music"

Yes. Your location says Hawaii; are you American, or do you just live there?

obviously not. They made plenty of money acting like most bands do. That and the fact that plenty of artists give away their music without having any way for someone to purchase their music (DJ Plaeskool comes to mind)

Answer: Because then Lars wouldn't have a reason to be a prick.

More than the artists, its the big companies that would lose interest. Sony, Columbia, etc. Despite all the crying about piracy, these companies still make money hand over fist. If copyright laws changed, it is conceivable that burning copies could have a major impact on cd sales and most major companies with the ability to mass produce and market big name music would lose interest and drop them. While it definately wouldn't end the creation of new music, it would change it. Its also likely that many groups, without the potential rewards of loose women and lots of cash, would quit their dreams of making it big and get 9-5 jobs. Now, whether or not someone feels that fewer more muscialy devoted groups is a good thing, thats a personal choice.
