  • Putting your foot in it - Things you have done which you regret

Everyone sometime during their life has made many embarrasing feckups putting their foot in their mouth because of situations they have been in. This thread is for people to post their stories..

    I will start with mine.

3 years ago I was specking a computer to start playing FFXI on, my friend told me to get a few quotes from various companies, so I did. One of them was the cheapest which was Dell. I phoned up Dell UK and got the obligitory call centre in India. I spoke kindly and slowly to the guy on teh end of the phone and asked him to retrieve my quotation, to which he replied "I'm sorry sir we don't have your guarentee listed", Guarentee, you mean quotation? "No sir we don't have the guarenntee ont eh system" I then spent 3 minutes explaining teh difference between a guarentee and a quotation to which the guy told me "Please don;t tell me how to do my job" Fine I said please find my quote I want to buy the computer to which he replied "I'm sorry sir but we don't have your guarentee on the computer, you have not bought one from us" Yes I know (me getting more worked up) your company has told me how much a computer will cost me and I want to buy it. To which he again replied "I'm sorry sir but we have no record of your purchase so can;t deal with your guarentee. That was enough for me so I asked "Please put me through to someone who speaks the english language" after him muttering racist and other things under his breath I finally got through to another call centre, this time in Ireland. A friendly Irish accented female, so I spelt out the situation, to which she replied, that is not the story I heard, apparently you wanted a guarentee for a computer you bought 6 years ago and you were very abusive to our employers, now by now I'm red in the face ready to strangle the nearest person to me, I said all i want is to retrieve the quotation I got (gave her the number for the 5th time) so i can buy this PC. she told me that wasn't a quotation it was a guarentee, to which now totaly lost it I replied "You blonde or something this quotation has written on the top of it Q U O T A T I O N that does not spell guarentee, to which point she put the phone down. 2 days later I received a letter from Dell UK asking me to appologise for insulting their employee with the comment "are you blonde or something".... she was.

I wrote back to them explained the whole situation and told them quite flately I would not even consider buying from them ever or recomending them to anyone, I never did appologise, why should I? if people can't do their jobs properly and get information correct to stop this happeneing to a customer why should I grovel at their feet because I "Hurt their feelings" this would not have happened if they used their brain and realised in India they put it on the wrong form to Dell HQ and sent me the correct one.

Well, i'll put this in reply to your story, as I myself also understand the horror called "Help Desk." I think you've really done the right thing.. They are there to service you, a customer, and these kind of stupid games happen daily with many helpdesks. A big fat angry letter, explaining the situation and saying the same thing like you did "I will never ever buy from you or recommend you to anyone, ever."

A lot of times those helpdesks actually cost a lot of money per minute too... That's why I prefer going to office's instead of calling stupid help desks, people are much less likely to treat me like this face to face.

What does your story have to do with regretting something?

Also, there's really no point regretting things. You can't change the past. Just learn from it and try to not be an idiot in the future.

unfortunately being an idiot is genetic... most people can't help it. the action to them is somewhat like breathing... they really don't know that they are doing it until it is pointed out to them.

Actually to cut the long storey short the puitting the foot in sarcastically say what are you blonde or something and she was took offense, is major foot chewing territory. when i am very worked up I am very sarcastic and ready to verbally pop at anyone with no thought on consequence. I could list many other situations where this has happened.

Re: Putting your foot in it - Things you have done which you regret

Ahhh recently I've almost learned a lesson in "It's not the intent, it's the words you speak" that offend people, and seriously... if you can't take a joke I would recomend never speaking to me directly ^_~ I've made fun of everything from myself to the 'powers that be' in some form or another.

I was at work on a holiday (yay for 24hr businesses -.- ) and it was so mind numbingly slow I couldn't stand it so I started sending group messages to people that I knew could take a joke over the internal system with the header, "These quotes are taken directly from a book titled You are Worthless, it is not meant to be offensive, just something to lighten the dreary day we are all having." So I figured my ass was covered, but I diddnt count on one thing, April. The message I sent out was in two parts the first one being a stab at the work enviornment: "Everyone at your job hates you and talks behind your back, secretly trying to get you fired." and, "If your tetris like cubicle was superimposed over a jungle and obeying those rules your boss would rape and eat you." The next installment was religous humor, listing off every religion and calling them Kooks and the last line was "The Amish are fsking retards." I could hear people laughing after I sent out the broadcast so I figured my work was done and the mood was lightened, but I diddn't count on April. I swear to god if you even sneezed at this delicate little flower she would cry to the manager that you said something that offended her that was all made up in her mind, well she decided to dig through the past logs of messages at the computer she was using for the day which turned out to be the one I used to send the messages a few days earlier. She actually ran out crying from work taking every word in the chat log as a personal insult. Low and behold I got called into the CO's office and was told to 'explain myself' without being informed as to why I was there in the first place. Asking Suzie what the 3rd degree interrigation was about so they told me why April ran out crying, and I fell out of the chair laughing. Which in hindsight wasnt the best thing to do, and the effect on that was I diddn't talk to any of my co-workers on un-work related topics for almost a year, then left without saying goodbye

Eh...I really didn't learn anything from it my lil stunt. Well maybe i did. But me and my bands mates at the time played at a wedding reception for an old friend. After the obligitory chicken dance...dollar dance we started playing some covers to get some dancers on the floor. Well i think about 4 songs in we got the floor filled and everyone was having a good time. Untill we got a request for the Dan Band version of Total Eclipse of the Heart. Performing that song was a total misjudgment of the crowd. I've always wanted to be booed off the stage just to feel what its like and laugh about it later...but i'd rather it not be in front of friends and people i grew up with. I don't know what was so wrong with it...We just played cat scratch fever and pour some sugar on me just before that and we were getting requests for beastie boys, meatloaf and metalica...

But what i learned is that devout catholics CANNOT and WILL NOT take a friggin joke. Also, trying to explain a joke to them is like farting in a revolving door.

Seriously... that was just awesome I shared that gem of a statement with my girlfriend as we passed the art building here on campus which surprisingly enough has a few wonderful revolving doors, and she almost fell over giggling, thank you Malevolent!

Did a test of the 1MC with the words "This is a test of the 1MC from the midships quarterdeck, test complete." ...all normal, except when followed by, "Damn, this F!!ker is loud!". Mic was still keyed. Good thing that was in "A school".

The first class nearly ripped my hand off trying to get the mic from my hand. We waited in silence for the chief to arrive. He never did. I was informed that I was lucky.

The rest of them pretty much match the severity of that situation and don't need to be delved into further.
