Of my Great Grandparents, 7 were born in the US, one was born on the Isle of Man. Therefore, three generations before me were Native Americans. That makes me a Native American. The closest immigrant in my bloodline is my great grandfather Loren from the Isle of Man. I have an English ancestor who was an Admiral during the Revolutionary War, but, much to my Great Aunt's chagrin during her application to the Daughters of the Revolutionary War, fought for the English. In general, my ancestry has been American since before the Civil War at least, but I'm not that aware of all of that--my aunts keep track of things. I'm an American Mutt, but if you trace it back far enough, I'm mostly Irish.

Well, I hate to contribute to the derailment of this thread but Feba is correct. There is still modern slavery in the U.S. Of course, it isn't as rampant as it was back in the day but, none the less, it is still here.

Let's look at the word slavery. Slavery: the state of a person who is a chattel of another. Ok, I know some people are going "Chattel??" so here: Chattel: (Legal Term) An article of movable personal property. i.e. a slave

If you aren't aware of the 1926 Slavery Convention, shame on you.....go wiki it or something. The Slavery Convention defines slavery as "...the status or condition of a person over whom any or all of the powers attaching to the right of ownership are exercised…." They define slave trade as "...all acts involved in the capture, acquisition or disposal of a person with intent to reduce him to slavery; all acts involved in the acquisition of a slave with a view to selling or exchanging him; all acts of disposal by sale or exchange of a slave acquired with a view to being sold or exchanged, and, in general, every act of trade or transport in slaves by whatever means of conveyance." (article 1.2)

There have been quite of few cases in the news. You see the problem is, we just don't care enough to remember them. It's like the homeless people on the streets with their signs or begging for change. We see them every day and just walk on by. We might occasionally notice but we quickly forget and move on.

In Washington, D.C. recently there was a very affluent couple that imprisoned a young woman and forced her to work for them. They beat her, chained her, barely fed her, and forced her to work long hours............gosh doesn't that sound like what happened to the Africans imported to this country hundreds of years ago? Yes, that is slavery. There was a Berkeley man that imprisoned young women to work at his restuarant and be sex slaves. There are many many more stories unfortunately. And I'm sure there are by far even more stories that we've haven't heard of yet.

Oh....fyi....I'm American and my heritage is Russian/German/Polish. Yes that makes me a good cook, very stubborn, and quite proud. LOL (Just joking and didn't mean to offend any other Russian or German or Polish decendents.)

Unfortunalty huckabee is out cuz he was the only genuine candidate. Fair Tax I mean common, you may have to pay a little more for smokes, beer, etc, but you save in the end. (Like when they put put PST and GST in canada and lowered Income tax. Look at it now.) And anyone who can rock the gitbox shows dedication, guitar is hard to play, and he is damn good. My vote goes to huckabee, since he is out oh I dont know give it to the jews they can fight over it.

These are all cases of illegal slavery. Anyone caught doing that is prosecuted. It's already illegal, can you make it more illegal? Would you like to implement random searches of dwellings to "check for slaves"? I suppose we could use Capital Punishment.

obama's father came to America from Africa and his mother is white. (he personal has NO credit or connection to a slavery background)

I think the point was that the term "african american" should describe people who immigrated from Africa itself as if you are born within the US you are a US citizen.

Or to make the point with a quick anecdote, back when I was in high school, my US history teacher went around asking what nationality people were. Kids would answer "half irish half italian" or "a third a this, a bit of that" etc. And after randomly asking a number of us, and getting similar answers all around, he prominantly exclaimed we were all wrong. Our heritage was italian, irish etc etc, but our nationality was American. Because we were born here, thus we are all american citizens...except for that one chick who was actually born in France.

Anyway, the point Sabaron is trying to make is that Obama's heritage is African, but he himself is a pure American. Just as much as Sabaron's heritage is irish.

As for the slavery issue, again the point is not that there's no slavery in this country, it's the fact that there's no legal slavery. It's now a felony crime of the highest order and not something condoned or participated in by the US government. As of now, Slavery is a legal issue that is to be handled by the police and government officials to stop and prevent it from happening, but it should not be a major political point at this time and age. For over a hundred years Slavery has been a crime. If someone participates in it, they are a criminal. That's not up for any kind of debate. And at this time, there is few, if any, people left who even remember the time of slavery here. And most certainly the average american has not been a victim of slavery.

I have no idea what your retort to my post is supposed to mean. My post stated that there is still an illegal slavery trade in the U.S. You post that the cases I mentioned were illegal slavery.....um...yep. Did I mention anything about searching homes? passing more laws? doing anything at all about it? Nope. So I'm totally baffled by your quoting me and your response.

But see, TGM, this whole thing started because Sabaron started talking about how there isn't any legal slavery. And then Feba was all "nuh uh!" and most of us were like "yeah huh!" No one is denying that illegal slavery is going on. Lots of illegal things are. But that has little do to with the point Sabaron was (originally) trying to make.

The entire tirade about slavery was in regards to the legal ownership of african slaves and how it relates to todays politics. And while talking about it, Sabaron mention that the legal trafficing and ownerships of slaves was no longer an issue in todays politics because it doesn't exist and has not for over a century. It was in regards to the race issues that were brought up and modern slavery is far less about race and all about illegal activities regardless of race, gender or nationality.

The point of *illegal* slavery is moot because that was not in anyway involved in the original issue being discussed. Everyone knows that's wrong and that's why it's currently illegal.

Yes, his Father is an "African American", but Obama himself is just an American.

He is of African descent, but he himself is not 'African'.

In the end, it's all just semantics though because that phrase is nothing but PC terminology, which is something I've never been too fond of.
