  • Could you live without having to leave your house?

I'm talking about the effects of being inside 24/7, not things like jobs and such. Basically, if you had everything you needed in your home, would you be able to stand not going outside?

    Goddamn poll failed still though.

Also, indicate how long you could/have been able to stand it.

Odd question, why do you ask?

Yes I could stand it because I did it for a few years, but if there is an element of choosing to do it there would have to be a pretty drastic reason for me to stay indoors 100% of the time.

I didn't really mind being cut off from other people much but sometimes I just need to go outside smell the air, lay in some grass, wriggle my toes in some mud, look at some stars or something and feel small and unimportant. Being outside helps me keep things in perspective and I get most of my best 'simple memorable pleasure' moments outside. That might be a bit corny but I don't really care.

Re: Could you live without having to leave your house?

I have a friend who is stuck in this situation, he is hosuebound due to him living in a council flat and his wheelchair is too big to get out of the doors. He has been stuck in his flat for 7 years now and only gets to get out for emergency hospital trips.

To say it drives him nuts is an understatement. His food is coked by his mother of which he just nukes in the microwave as and when hes hungry and I get luxories for him i.e. cordials, crisps, fags etc. from the local supermarket.

The thing he wants to do most of all is sit outside in the sun. The worst thing about being stuck inside is you don't get the benefits of the UV light from teh sun. we have bought him a UV lamp and daylight bulbs but it is only a small help and does not match the sitting outside with a breeze and the fresh smell of cut grass etc.

I could not stand more than 4 days in a row stuck inside. I'd have to get out and go for a walk or a drive around somewhere, I like the outdoors too much.

It is a proven fact that UV light from the sun helps your mood, without it you can go into a depression, its why most people are depressed in winter when the sun doesn't come out and the light level is low.

Just haven't posted random threads in awhile.

Also, I meant to put it in the poll, but I wasn't really talking about illness/injury/poor weather and the like. Although it does apply in the longer term, I suppose.

Also, Jarre, I'm not familiar with British laws, but aren't there wheelchair accessibility requirements of some kind? Heck, you're an architect, there has to be some way of getting him and his wheelchair out the door.

The past few years since i Graduated high school have been sitting online playing FFXI and taking colleges courses online, so basically ive been inside behind the computer for a few years. So i could get used to it, but being outside is just something I need to do, whenever i go outside to hang out with friends it keeps me in touch with the real world before i come online that night/afternoon to sit behind my FFXI fantasy character.

awww thats so sad =( and yeah if I where you i'd try to figure out a way to get him outside! I agree the winter is depressing, and I LOVE the sun, I'm sure your friend does too, its nice to sit out and bathe in the warmth of the sun on a hot summer day or go swimming, go to parks etc. I think you should help your friend out and build him a new doorway =)

I could, but I wouldn't want to. Outside has too much to offer.

Re: Could you live without having to leave your house?

I could easily adjust to an indoor life. Hell, I've done it in the past (both distant and recently) for months on end. I'm rather nocturnal and am used to not seeing the light of the sun for extended periods of time. Being in Germany and Japan while in the Air Force has helped with that (especially in the winters). Working nights also had something to do with it.

I'm quite the opposite of most people in the fact that I'm perpetually drained and out of energy if I stay in the sun for too long (i.e. like a few minutes), and I feel charged and wide awake when it's night time. I also have fairly light-sensitive eyes, and I also don't take a tan very well before it quickly becomes a burn. I get very disoriented at times when outside in the light. Everything also looks very washed out, so colors tend to be faded when I see them outside.

I'm surprised I haven't begun to need to survive off of the blood of the living yet.

Re: Could you live without having to leave your house?

I work at home and play online games. That kinda speaks for itself.

I force myself to go outside often though, or ill go nuts.

Signed up for gym which also helps me get off my lazy ass every day at 7pm. If im in the mood ill go for a walk if not i return home.

Weekends are off and i absolutely must go somewhere outside.

So i guess no, i cant bear to stay inside for too long, i start feeling depressed.

There is now with current housing but not old housing, + when he moved into teh flat 10 years ago he was able bodied. There have been 27 council properties with wheelchair access he could have had over the years, but the council decided to give them to asylum seeks as they got more money from the goverment with them. i obviously can't go into major details as he is currently pursuing a legal case against the council for negligable duty of care.

The flat itself is from 1960's and the front door is the width of the corridor which is 800mm (2'6") and his wheelchair (due to himj being 6'11" tall and 30 stone in weight) is 3'2" You can't physically put a wider door in without major structural work and his flat being on teh ground floor of a 5 storey block of flats of multiple occupancy is why that work can't be done.

If I have a whole hill with waterfalls and lots of trees inside my own backyard, yes.
There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot,
but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence
transform a yellow spot into the sun.
