Re: Did the earth move for you? - earthquake experiences.

What you think brits don't actually speak or play the game and this forum is yank exclusive? There are more of us here than you think and were here to stay, this affected alot of us as its a very rare phenomenor to be this scale the last one close to this scale was in 1984 in North Wales before many here were born.

was in 1984 in North Wales before many here were born.
      After I was born sonny!

Earthquakes are kinda meh, been there, done that and olde news over here

I remember one though that was rather odd. I was in the kitchen making a sandwich, and I noticed something odd, it was quiet. Now I live out in the countryside, so it's pretty quiet anyway, but this was almost oppresive, almost like the world was holding it's breath kind of silence. I put the knife I was holding down, and a few seconds later I heard this almost tortured screaming sound from the earth and it felt like the ground just dropped from under my feet, then the shaking started pretty heavily, with the usual rumble and stuff.

I'll never forget the silence or the scream from the ground prior to that earthquake though.

Otherwise yeah, it doesn't happen often but I'm just not that impressed with 'em, although we have fairly minor ones here I think. So long as nothing is immediately above me and I'm not next to glass windows or something like that, I'll be the one walking around like nothing is going on while everyone else ducks and covers

You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be misqouted and then used against you.

I don't have a big ego, it just has a large mouth.

Nothing has actually come near anywhere I live, as far as I know. There were a few times where the mall herded everyone into the basement, or the power at the house blacked out for a few minutes, but nothing really bad.

Also lived in Georgia for awhile. Caught the edge of a hurricane, but it was pretty minor (I actually sat out on the back porch watching the trees move a bit and the rain fall while it was happening. Nothing exciting, although some of the weaker trees around town got knocked down)
I live here in the Southeast, and I have to say: I'm pretty thankful I wasn't around here when Ivan or what's-his-name hit.

Re: Did the earth move for you? - earthquake experiences.

I was in mexico city at the time when the 1985 earthquakes hit. I don't remember much about what happened in the city since I was way too young, but the feeling of being in the middle of an earthquake is something I'll never forget.

          Good times.

I (and obviously a lot of other people too) got the earth tremor in the north west here too. Was just about to doze off from watching T.V. in my room, when all of a sudden, the room started shaking! Luckily, because it was only a minor thing, I didn't have anything falling off any shelves e.t.c but my computer monitor started jilting around a bit. That was the only noticeable thing in my room.

I felt a bit shaken and worried by what happened, but it only lasted about 2-3 seconds, so I'm glad that it didn't get worse or cause any breakages.I was still a bit shook up after it stopped though. Took about 15 mins for my heart rate to get back to normal again. Hehe.

In 1989, I was on a freeway in Oakland, CA and there was a nasty earthquake. It was a horrible experience that took me quite a few years to get over. I have no desire to visit CA again because of it. LOL For me, its the sounds....the sounds haunt me.

I'm glad that you and your girlfriend are ok Jarre. Get that roof back in shape before the rains!

Thanks TGM, yeah the sound was the worst thing. Being in the construction industry as an architect i was able to pull a few favours from some roofers for a bit of beer money so my roof is watertight now. though I've had to check it again today as we were battered by 70mph winds on friday night. We are certainly gettign a battering this year!
