  • Did the earth move for you? - earthquake experiences.

Well I was just drifting off to sleep at 12:58am GMT the house shook, I thought I was dreaming until my GF poked me in a panic, I opened my eyes to see one of the boxes on my wardrobe fall off and my mobile phone traverse accross the bedside table, a few smashes could be heard outside and the noise sounded like a train of 44 tonne lorries crawling past, it lasted 30 seconds. The Uk had experienced an earthquake, a rare phenomena here to be felt. It registered 5.3 on the rictor scale and the epicentre was in a town called market rasen only 15 miles North of me. some hosues have suffered minor structural damage but their isn't any major reported incidents as far as I am aware. heres the BBC news article. My house lost a few roof tiles, but that was all so will have to get them sorted.

so have any of you been in an earthquake, what happened, how did it affect you and for the british folks here, id the earth move for you lst night? as apparently people could feel it from asfar as 200 miles away!

Well, I can't comment on earthquakes of the scale you felt, but here in Japan, we do get minor ones almost daily, often weekly, some that are barely felt, and some that are very noticeable. It can be kinda off-putting at times when the room I'm in starts to shake subtly and abruptly when I'm concentrating on something.

I live in Nottingham and it was felt here too, apparently. I say apparently because I slept through it, only waking up at the end of the rumble because I thought someone was in the room as my bedcovers were coming off!

Then I just went back to sleep again and it wasn't until the morning I found out there was an actual earthquake!

Actually minor ones happen just about everywhere around the world daily.

          Live in Southern California.
It's suppose to be Earth Quake central, but I haven't felt one for a while. We get minor ones all the time.

The last big one that I remember feeling was the Northridge Earthquake. I was having a sleep over when my friend dove under the dining table, and yelled at me. I was still half asleep on the sofa and the chandler swayed above, before I dove under the dining table as well.

Otherwise it's not too bad. You get use to it. Learn to bolt cabinets to the walls and stuff. Make sure your not sleeping under a vase or anything unless you have some museum putty underneath the vase.

We were in the middle of Dynamis and our token Brit (and puller) starts exclaiming about it, "Holy shit, the house is fucking shaking!" He was freaked out momentarily, but he kept pulling.

A few minutes later another member of our shell was asking him if he felt it, and I was like, "WTF we have more than one wanker!?!?" (That's our nickname for our British pal, he doesn't seem to mind.) So yesterday not only did I have a vicarous experience with the earthquake but I learned we have more than one person from England in our shell. Cheers.

He doesn;t mind being called a wanker? thats a bad insult...

We were quite lucky here, in Barnsley one kid got a broken pelvis when a chimney collapsed through the roof onto his bed, and the town jsut north of us had mnay chiomneys fall down and some structural cracks appearing.

We spend a lot of time in that shell insulting each other "all in good fun." So no, he doesn't mind I think because he probably thinks we Americans don't know what it means or he just knows we're kidding.

I mean hey they tell me I fail on a regular basis, doesn't bother me.

My boyfriend lives there and felt it. Exciting. He and I are odd little things. Last time I felt an earthquake I was beside myself giddy over it. XD

My experience with a quake a few years back:

I woke up shortly before it for no real reason. I tend to wake up in the middle of the night like that, so eh. I had a parakeet, and I heard him in his cage kind of fluttering about rather restless, which was odd for the time of night it was.

Thirty seconds later I hear what I at first though was thunder or one of the big-rigs, then realized it was not only coming from the ground, but also from behind the house where there is no highway. I remember thinking 'No way. Cool!' and then the house shook. 30 seconds or so, nothing major. Only a 3.8 or something on those lines. But I was super excited.

Sidenote on wanker: I can't take that insult seriously. I know it is, but it just makes me laugh uncontrollably. Playing on EU LotR servers, I hear it shouted about from time to time and just burst into laughter. I blame Tango and Cash. That movie was kinda idiotic, but every time I hear 'wanker' I think of that scene with them dangling that guy from the roof and him saying it. And I haven't been able to take the word seriously since.

I have no idea what the hell you just said, but that seems calm enough.

Also, no earthquakes, I've lived in Kansas most of my life. We get tornados.

Nothing has actually come near anywhere I live, as far as I know. There were a few times where the mall herded everyone into the basement, or the power at the house blacked out for a few minutes, but nothing really bad.

Also lived in Georgia for awhile. Caught the edge of a hurricane, but it was pretty minor (I actually sat out on the back porch watching the trees move a bit and the rain fall while it was happening. Nothing exciting, although some of the weaker trees around town got knocked down)

A co-worker and I looked at each other pretty funny and wondered what the heck was going on. It didn't dawn on us that we'd just experienced an earthquake until we regained our balance and noticed that the lights were swinging about. Earthquakes are rare in Wyoming. It was the first time that I realized that forces more powerful than myself existed on planet earth.
