Andrew Loomis' books are a great resource, particulary Figure Drawing for all it's Worth. Proportion and perspective are critical concepts to learn.

What am I supposed to do with the site? How do I use it? And where can I buy the book?

From what I see, it appears to be heavy readin; if I had that kind of reading time, I'd have the last two Harry Potter books, Eldest, probably Firestarter, and likely a plethora of other novels of fantasy and otherwise already under my belt.

Heck, with that kind of reading time, I wouldn't be surprised if I would be able to read half of the Redwall series by then, or possibly even one of the books in the Lord of the Rings trilogy or The Hobbit.

My point is that I want short simple advice, something along the lines of "How to draw. Let me show you it." I don't want anything to put me on the level of a professional artist who lives off of their masterpieces and commissions and the like: I just want not to suck.

My daughter suggests using this online turtorial. She said there are even videos.

What's not constructive about the truth? American Idol wouldn't be worth watching if somebody had told all those people the truth before they got on camera, and it would save a lot of people a lot of emarassment.

The problem isn't that you're telling him he sucks. We know it, he knows it. And that's exactly what's not constructive about it, you're not really adding anything.

It's not any better than asking for criticism and getting "OMG YOUR STUFF IS AWSUM" as a response.

That's true, but it was also uncalled for. Don't think I've ever had any major disputes with you nor do I make a habit of thanking people that disagree with you.

If it was in jest, ok, haha. Kinda hard to tell with you, though, since 9/10 times you just say something that can only be described as blunt and sharp at the same time. Just comes off like you're trying to ruin someone's day.

Sometimes I forget I can't act with certain people the way I act with friends. I get along better with people who know the game (I just lost The Game) and that messing with people is all just part of it. I'm sure it can seem childish on the outside, but it actually requires some amount of maturity to keep up.

Well, time to bring this thread back on-topic.

Even "How-to" books are based on the core principles explained in the book I referenced. If you cannot grasp the concepts of proportion, perspective, contours, and such, you won't benefit much from any other advice.

I'm familiar with the concepts you listed, but if the book itself looked anything like the pages on that site . . .

Look, I barely have time for anything, even the drawing itself, which is why I'm not setting very high standards for myself. ({Holy} {subligar}, {bat}{man}, is it 11:30 pm already?!?) And while I'm pretty sure I need to read up on the basics listed in the book, I don't think I can dedicate myself to much more than a "For Dummies" book.

That's why there are books like this

I don't want to be on the level of a professional artist . . .

And about YM's art. I definitely will not say its THE best. But it's HIS best, and that's what makes it good and worth looking at. As long as effort is being put into the whatever is being created, then I see it as awesome.

Not sure if this is somehow related but, my friend can't draw that well; Nonetheless, I would appreciate his hand-drawn cards far more than any store-bought cards.
