Honestly the main reason why I'm not being debatey right now is that I'm having way too much fun screwing with the Conspiracy Theorists on Facebook, so I'm all debated out right now

I would talk with your friend, the whole situation is very complicated and there is no easy solution. Military Intervention and not doing anything will each cause a bloodbath in the long term since we basically left it way too long to act. It's exactly like Bosnia, Sudan, Rwanda and the Congo.

The Middle east has always been complicated as well as there's not only secular factions in play but you have all of the racial, cultural and religious tensions that are causing people to pop up. The reason why the "Rebels" are attacking people and each other is because there is no "Rebel" faction per se. The only organised one is the FSA and while I'm not going to defend then, there are some cunts in that group, they get blamed for the Sarin attacks because all the little groups are banded together as the Rebels or FSA by the media in the west, which makes it easier for Assad, Putin et al to win the propaganda war outside Syria. It may well have been a bunch of anti-Assad Sunnis who decided to use it to murder a lot of Shiites for example. We don't really know.

First of all, LOL at all of the Dems and Obama himself wanting to go into Syria when they all criticized Bush for a similar action. Not saying circumstances were the same and yes let's not go into the WMD thing (because at the time I believe that everyone, including good ol GW believed they were there). But I find it really funny how they all criticized the hell out of Bush for threatening military action against another sovereign nation and are now poised to do the same.

And second of all, good job reducing the military, Obama, bet that's working out really well right about now, huh?

Don't claim to know everything and I'm sure this is going to spark a debate (and I'm so terrible at debating because I'm not really passionate enough to fight with the fervor that serious debaters have) but those are just the two things that stand out to me. Clearly I am not a fan of Obama. I didn't mind Bush that much but I'm not really a fan of any politician at this point. At the very least, I'm amused by these developments. I shouldn't be amused by the prospect of war, but I am. And I think that's my big peeve about this whole situation, that the politics these days have made it impossible for me to take anything seriously anymore. Or maybe that's the internet. Or both. Who knows.

I lean pretty far to the left and I say fuck Syria. It's not our fight. We can't keep playing world police.

Secondly: lol at the military ever getting meaningfully reduced in this country. There's too much industry, special interests and culture tied up in our war machine for it to ever be reduced in a significant capacity. If we actually reduced our military in more than a symbolic manner, there would be thousands upon thousands of Americans put out of work, and not just those in the military.

If nothing else we can both agree that all politicians are treacherous and impossible to respect, and that makes for a pretty sad situation for everyone.

Wow, I really hate ice cream trucks and their awful tinkly music. Stop already.

This was compounded by the fact that while I was out on my walk, my phone refused to get enough of a signal to get Pandora so I was unable to drown it out with music that doesn't make me want to rip my ears off. I'm not entirely sure what I pay Sprint for if I can't use my unlimited data plan the way I want to.

Didn't get a job within our agency that I wanted. Started job hunting elsewhere. It might sound like I'm just pouting because I didn't get a position I was looking for. But I was only going to stick around for the experience. Beyond that, there ain't much in the way of upward mobility here. There's a clearly defined job progression, but so few positions.

So...time to look for jobs! Friends are off doing other things for Labor Day weekend so it's not like I've got much else to do.

Syria seems like another war where the US or anyone in the west getting involved are doing so too late and just making matters worse. Plus if we did manage to stop the war for a short time there are so many fingers in that pie that it would just start up again not long after we left - and then we'd have terrorists with an axe to grind against new people.

You know, just like when Regan, Bush, Clinton, Bush Jr. and a number of their predecessors did. Seems like ever since WWII we've just been good at meddling.

Part of it is that Assad called Obama's red-line bluff. If he doesn't act, it both makes himself look empty as a president, and undercuts any future threats -- it basically makes America that guy who has a black belt and could, you know,totally kick his ass, whenever, wherever. But, I mean, he just doesn't WANT to, you know?

I think the Iraq comparison makes the Syria case a lot stronger, actually; Iraq was based on shaky evidence of possession; Syria has much stronger evidence of actual use. Iraq was a matter of protection against future crimes against unknown groups, Syria is a matter of response to crimes against a very clear group. Yes, there are the claims that the chemical weapons were actually used by the rebels. I don't pretend that that is impossible, but all the same, someone has used them.

To be honest, I would also prefer to let most of the world sort out it's own problems as well. Unless there's a strong drive toward liberal democracy (as in, a country that will not only have a vote, but not give all of it's support to the Female Genital Mutilation party), I think most countries aren't going to be hugely better off because we invaded them. And if we ARE going to play world police, we pretty much HAVE to deal with North Korea before anyone will take us seriously ever. I mean, relatively speaking, Syria is a wife-beater who is only getting checked because he forced her to drink bleach: An absolute monster, yes, but not a significantly more dangerous monster than we had previously been allowed to be. NK, on the other hand, is a methhead with a minigun. I'd rather not get involved in another middle eastern war for at least a couple decades, it would be nice to have American troops shooting people of a different shade of brown for awhile. But all the same, an America that won't fight is very dangerous: obviously there's the 1930s Germany example, but I mean, remember what brought about Pearl Harbor. Japan thought we would sit back, lick our wounds, and stay out of the fight.

tl;dr it's a very complicated situation, but given we're almost certainly going at this point, I think it's more constructive to aim our debates at "How should we", not whether we should or not. I mean, it can be a boots on the ground, Iraq-style democracy building adventure, or it can be more of a Libyan "Park warship nearby, fire missiles, repeat" sort of thing. We can aim to dispose the government, root out and destroy their leaders, and replace them with rule in our likeness; or we can just punish and inconvenience them, with an aim that the boots on the ground are locals who are already involved in fighting.

Had to get my phillips head screwdriver out to get my dinner out while it was still warm.

I think I'll make Dad's Labor Day tomorrow and call him over to see if he can help me fix this.

Toilet has been running intermittently. For a few seconds (5-6) then a few minutes later, etc. Had maintenance come out to fix it, they replaced the innards of the tank (which is what I thought it was, too), but it's still doing it. Not likely that they'll come out again during a holiday weekend which means I'm gonna have to put up with my toilet troubles for at least another day.

Also, since it wasn't the tank, that means there's something else wrong which will undoubtedly require a lot more labor (and possibly parts or even a whole new toilet) and I'm just not in the mood to deal with it anymore. Not to mention I've had issues with the toilet since I moved in.

Pain in the ass but still beats moving. I guess.

Updated my video-card drivers to 320.49 (Running a 560 currently) and have been having some repeated BSOD issues. I probably should have looked before I updated, considering there are multiple topics about these drivers causing problems.

Reading this I thought it sounded great. We are finally getting an outside body to looked at just how fair the Government is being with austerity measures. It not only hits the unemployed but the low and medium income employed as well.

However, I reached the end of the article and it read: "The visit – at the invitation of the government – takes in London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast and Manchester and will include sessions in local communities" and facepalmed.

My guess is that although we all know how unfair it is, I will be surprised if the verdict comes back saying unfair. That and we all know how much successive governments have given a shit about what the UN is saying, and how the UN itself is as much use as a chocolate teapot these days.

Actually, I was going to post how Tumblr has the best thing ever. I just click the "X" and I can ignore someone that's quite clearly a raging idiot forever. Their words cease to exist in my dashboard and news feeds.

Every site should have that. I realize it could be used to become very sheltered, but I'm mainly just using it to weed out the excessively negative, bile-fueled people and wet blankets of the internet that show up in feeds about things I like to read or see.

I love Tumblr, too. Mostly because if you're a fan of anything there is a never a lack of differing interpretations on what's happening with it.

There's a lot of ridiculousness and the English language has been completely butchered all to shit, but it's fun.
