On the JW thing - they're not even a bother. They come around maybe once or twice a year at best. If you're going to get pissy about them, you may as well get pissy about Girl Scouts or the Avon lady

It depends on where you live. Around here I see Witnesses monthly. In the neighborhood I grew up in, they never came around at all, even though I knew there were two families of Witnesses within two blocks of me.

Yeah, they normally come around monthly. I just look through the peep hole and don't answer the door. The ironic thing is even though in my opinion they lack manners, going door to door trying to push their religion on people, they exercise good manners in only knocking once and then leaving when i don't open the door.

7+ Catholic churches, couple of JW churches at least 3-4 Methodist Churches and one and a half Mosques (one was blown up) within 3 miles of me.

You guys have never lived near a Mosque before have you? Basically you have a guy yelling Arabic from the rooftops using a loudspeaker system at 5am every fucking morning that can be heard from miles away since the calls to plrayer can only be "no louder than church bells".

That said it's the Catholics that are most annoying where I live, especially when the priests WILL stop you in the street and rant about never having seen you in his Church before, even if you tell them that you're registered with one of the other churches.

When I was at my grandmother's funeral earlier this year, several people approached me and asked me what church I was going to now. I'm choosing to believe they were trying to segue into small talk about what that parish is like or how they know that pastor, rather than trying to act as my spiritual warden, but it made me incredibly uncomfortable. I didn't want to be at a service attempting to show respect for my grandmother and her beliefs and then walk around telling people "I don't believe in your silly God, anymore." I found less and less convincing ways to dodge the question and move across the room.

Today's pet peeve are masseuses. It's too much like prostitution for me to enjoy a paid massage, even when my workouts are leaving me more and more sore by the day. They make things too personal. They need to be more like doctors. Professional, but friendly, and know what to do with minimal effort on my part.

I would have lied and said I was from out of town (assuming many were strangers) and that you go to one in your hometown. If they press the issue after that, I'd tell them that it wasn't their business and the reason you were there was for your grandmother and, "let's not forget that she's the focus here, not me." Etc.

Then again, I'm not opposed to lying in and around a church - I'm already going to hell if it exists, so I might as well enjoy myself on the way.

The thing is, I said where I was living now, and the guy I was talking to actually knew which Catholic church I would be going to, and asked me about it.

Ouch. Well then redirection is the best option. "So, you're here about my grandmother? Great lady, huh? Yeah, she wouldn't want you proselytizing at her funeral. I miss her a lot. I'm glad you came to her funeral, she would have liked that ..." etc. Completely make them feel like shit for even bothering you about it while you're grieving. That's what I would have done.
