I don't just save my games. I version control the save file so I can literally go back in time to any decision point where the plot forks.

But mostly because I like going back to the opera scene in FFVI.

Times when you are reminded life is cruel.
My great aunt passed away yesterday, This morning my Nephew passed away bought into the world 14 weeks early then leaves us 3 weeks later. I see death all the time at work and at times am naive enough to think I've developed a thick skin, Then this happens and I just don't know what to think,

This is one shitty week that's for sure,

1) I'm fairly sure there is something in the ToS about illegal activities.

2) I personally don't give a shit about what people decide to pirate but there are people on the board who are strongly against it. I know from experience that on this board in particular you do not even mention anything positive about piracy within earshot of certain members unless you want to see them force their opinions down your throat.

3) Skyrim has a mod manager that not only works but is far more efficient and reliable at installing mods than Steam is. Steam is mostly a crapshoot as to if it will actually install your mods. Actually I think I've only gotten Steam to install a single mod while doing them all manually or using the mod manager has never failed.

4) Bethesda are one of the few developers out there that realise just how futile DRM is at protecting software from pirates. They were even wary about using Steam for quite some time given that it means that playing and installing a game on steam leaves you completely reliant on their servers being up. Either way, not shoving DRM down the consumer's throat has actually worked given that they make games that are actually worth paying the equivalent of $70 for (the average price of a brand new video game in the UK).

5) Pirating a Bethesda game is sort of like rubbing your genitals in their face for not being dicks and choosing not to force DRM down your throat. It makes you a massive dick.

What about offline mode? And Orange Box came in an actual box, with discs. And you can make backups.

You need to go online to enable offline mode since it requires a game to be fully updated to work offline (unless they changed it) and you actually logging on to Steam to enable offline mode in the first place.

Well, yeah, but once you have the game installed it's not an issue unless you left a game updating halfway the last time you were online.

And hey, after 6 months you'll experience a Steam holiday sale and end up with more games than you know what to do with. It's almost impossible for your library not to have at least one game ready to go.

Thankfully I've only been doing the mornings this week so I miss out of the post four o'clock nutters that I end up having to deal with. You know, people that waste your time coming in or calling you to complain their neighbour's trees are too big or they want to know what they can do about dandelions fro their neighbour's garden being blown onto their lawn.

But it does mean that today I had to deal with a horde of angry people who should have gotten their shit sorted first thing Monday morning, and now it's Friday, there is no way I can help then get their shit sorted until Monday because there frankly is not enough time and anyone I could refer them to probably isn't going to be open during the weekend.

You know, the kind of people that leave stuff until after the last minute (even though if you really cared about the problem you would get that shit sorted out right away) and then blame you because you can't do a thing for them? Yeah that is what I have to deal with every fucking Friday.

It's perhaps easier with people you don't know because you are detached from them, and you've learned that part, but you're still human and losing someone you love - even for a short time - is very hard.
