So today my truck made a really unsettling noise. Anyone have any experience with cars at all?

Every time I turn my wheel I hear this really loud metallic grinding noise as if something in the front end that's tied to the wheel is rubbing against something else really heavily. I'm pretty worried it's something serious but I'd rather not take it to the shop and get taken to the cleaners myself. Anyone have any ideas?

Uneducated guess: Something up with the power steering that you can't fix yourself. If there's a grinding noise that's probably an indication that you should take care of it asap before the components get more damaged. If your power steering goes out completely that's not the end of the world, but if it happens unexpectedly at a bad time it could lead to an accident.

That was one of my assumptions. The other was that the ball joints were somehow loose. I don't have a clue how it would have happened but it's something I'm not waiting on at all. This puppy is going to the shop tomorrow morning. The only road time it'll see is for me to get from work to home tonight.

Going to be on-call at work for the next 4 weeks. Love it when the sky falls after you get back from vacation. Like the commercials: Like it never even happened!

Today's list includes

-People staring at a fast food menu.
I knew what I wanted when I left my house.
-Children crying in a restraunt while I am trying to enjoy my meal.
-People who hold hands and take up an entire sidewalk.
These people drive me nuts. Then they look at me like I am the one in the wrong and I an supposed to walk out into the road and go around them while they enjoy their 'stroll'.
-People who leave their dogs out past 11 and I have to listen to the damn thing bark at every car going down the freeway.
-People who don't wash their hands after using the woman's room. It's disgusting.
-My name being called for no reason. I'll answer and get no response. Then they call my name again. Biggest peeve on this list.

Check your fluid levels, the screeching usually happens when there's a leak (you should've noticed some amount of it in past days/weeks) and you are steering dry. If that's the case get a liter or two to refill, that will stop both the noise and the damage until you take it to the shop tomorrow. And will also help pinpoint the leak if there is one I guess.



PS > I'm talking about steering oil/liquid, not engine oil. <_<

I was goig to say that but Ray nailed it on the head. It helps having my friend who used to be an ex-street racer. If it doesn't stop after you try Rays method I suggest calling in for a repair and as for being taken to the cleaners I'd suggest if your really not okay with the noise pay for a tow to pick your truck up.If you have other means of transport to pick it up after mind you.
