The Weather Channel.

They used to be just that, a channel about the current weather. Now its all about scaring the shit out of people to boost ratings. For example, with Irene, the Richmond area on one of their colorific maps has it in the HIGH (or really close to it) danger zone. But if you actually look at the forecast, it calls for a 90% of rain, heavy at times, with winds around 30-40 MPH, gusting to 60.

It does not help that it is making my mother panic back in Indiana. It took a tag team effort of me and my father to remove the Jim Cantory scare mongering.

While I fully expect to lose power at some point the weekend, it don't think the danger is going to be HIGH. (The power company isn't that concerned, they are more worried about the outer banks and the norfolk area, as they should be)

Yea, I am tired of the fear mongoring that the weather companies do. They do it to boost ratings, and it causes people to panic, and stock pile food, and go out shopping like crazy to get supplies for the storms.

This is New England I live in, yet people still aren't used to this kind of stuff? Hell, we had tons of snow last year, and people went ape shit trying to get supplies.

People act as though Hurricane Season isn't a regular thing, and that people who live in coastal cities haven't dealt with this every single year to one degree or another for the entire time that they have lived in their coastal area.

I mean, I've seen people talking about how the recent earthquake and the upcoming hurricane are a sign of Jesus' return. Because regularly occurring natural disasters are clearly a sign of the end times.

I live in Maryland, and there's a few things you can always count on that somehow still surprise people every single year, like blizzards, searing hot summers, and hurricanes. Earthquakes, not so much, but we're only getting them because I'm secretly fracking in my backyard.

I'd argue for New York and New Jersey, Hurricane Season isn't really a big factor for them and its not something they generally make preparations for since they're used to getting the leftovers of leftover tropical storms and not the brunt of a hurricane

Earthquake and possible hurricane in the same week - neither of which are considered normal for where you live? I guess it would be a bigger deal and make for a more memorable week, though it seems the Carolinas and Virginia are really in Irene's cross-hairs.

People have been free-associating Christ's return with world events and weather for 2000 years now. Humans are arrogant and don't need religion to think the world is always getting worse. They just want bragging rights when it does happen and they come in all kinds.

I live in Delaware and it's been 12 years since we've had a hurricane. It's not exactly a common occurence.

Not common is the same as never now. I mean, I live in Ohio, and during Hurricane Season our weather changes dramatically depending on the intensity of the weather on the coast. You can't tell me that doesn't happen in places that are closer.

Sure it's affected by it. But dealing with hurricanes and dealing with the weather changes resulting from hurricanes is a big difference. A hurricane hits the Gulf Coast and the residual rain heads north. Chances are, I'm going to get wet and that's about it. A hurricane rides the Gulf Stream and pounds the Outer Banks before bouncing out to sea. I'm gonna have a bit of wind and some rain. A hurricane hops off the Gulf Stream in North Carolina, hits Virginia and follows 95 North (as Irene seems to be tracking) then there is a bit of panic in the air, however justified it may be.

A co-worker told me that he was watching a report on Irene this morning. The reporter was at the beach somewhere in North Carolina, ostensibly showing how high the surf was -- only judging from the scene over his shoulder, the surf was supposedly not that much higher than usual. The reporter supposedly waded out into the water, and then reported with great excitement that the water was as high as his waist!

Um -- pretty sure I can walk into the water at any beach anywhere, no matter what the weather, and find water as high as my waist (as long as there's not a big drop-off before I get to waist-deep water).

My peeve at the moment: the person who is supposed to be making changes to documents based on the recommendations a co-worker and I make doesn't freakin' pay attention. On documents #1 & #2 (each one page long with a lot of empty space on the page), we asked for one change per document. The changes weren't made. On documents #3 & #4 (each two pages long with a little less empty space), we asked for six changes per document. Three changes per document were made. Two changes per document were ignored. The remaining change was completely screwed up -- in fact the person made the change requested for #1 & #2 to #3 & #4 instead.

She wonders why I get testy when I have to work with her.

ETA: Oy! The third round of revisions STILL isn't done correctly. I swear if this woman acquired a brain cell, it would be very lonely.

Work, and co-workers.

I worked last night from 11 Pm to 7 Am. I had no issues with that, but I go home and go to sleep at 8:30, my brother comes into my room and wakes me up at 10:30, and I couldn't go back to sleep. I had to help my father finish up a few things on the shed that we started a few weeks ago, and I was very irritable at the moment due to lack of sleep. We put stuff in the shed, and I hurt my back. I went to work at 7 Pm, to 11 Pm. I had two co-workers that pissed me the hell off. One co-Worker did NOTHING all night, and he never does anything. The other co-worker is complaining to me ALL NIGHT LONG! So, with two hours of sleep, a complaining co-worker, and one telling me what to do (The one that did nothing is telling me what to do.), all night long. I just wanted to just bang my head against a wall as hard as I could while screaming. Then.... Tomorrow I gotta work from 11 Am to 3 Pm.

So, stressed as hell tonight, which makes it hard for me to sleep, and then the storm. I hope that the store looses power so I don't have to work tomorrow. I am so damned tired, and I can't fucking sleep.
