Honestly if she asks I'll be straight up with her. Her whining on FB is annoying. And every time I would see some of her friends ask "Aww, what's wrong?" I just facepalmed.

Yeah, she does that too. But she's not the only one. I get the people who post those like twice a week. And you're like ... really? That kind of shit went out with myspace. And the next person who posts one of those all caps messages that says "90% OF YOUR FRIENDS WON'T HAVE THE COURAGE TO POST THIS AND SPEAK OUT AGAINST BREAST CANCER" I'm going to go off. The reason I don't post that shit is it's fucking stupid, it does nothing to help the cause, and I hate being a fucking sheep like everyone else who thinks they're so clever jumping in on some false FB cause that's not going to change a fucking thing.

I saw something like that once on my Facebook, somebody posting about how only 1% of her friends will post out against cancer. My dad died of colon cancer 2 years ago, so I was particularly offended that somebody would put up a message saying that anybody who doesn't put a silly Facebook update about cancer up doesn't care about it.

One of the benefits of keeping my friend list very small is that I've managed to avoid people like that. Both of my sisters tend to do it, but I have long since blocked myself from seeing anything on their profiles without having to deal with them noticing that I've defriended them.

For the most part, no one I know on FB is a retard.

It used to be a lot worse. My mom bugged me to play FarmVille for a while and then had me add all these strangers so I'd have enough neighbors for bonuses, but after I got sick to death of it and I deleted all those people, that stupid shit happens less and less.

Also, "complaint girl" was a big offender on this crap, too. And for a while, I thought I might want to stay friends with her because we got along pretty well at work, but the fact that she's needy and annoying on FB has pretty much negated any feelings I had that hanging out with her might be cool.

I do sometimes wonder who has me filtered. I post a lot of stuff I really care about and want others to know about along with the amusing things, and the likes and comments rarely add up to the number of people I think would be really interested. I wouldn't be too surprised if people had hidden or unfriended me because of some unconventional religious, sexual or political belief I expressed, which is inevitable if I want to be open about myself but still bums me out.

You can filter someone without defriending them. I forget how, but it's possible.

@Taskmage, my dad's wife defriended me because I post swear words on my wall. I was like .... really? I know she has young-ish kids (well, if you consider 15 and 11 to be young, I think those are their ages now, fuck if I really know) but dude ... a shit or a fuck isn't going to kill them. Now if I were spouting some highly offensive anti-religious or homophobic or racist shit, I could see it, but for a cuss? Wut?

So yeah, I kind of lost a lot of respect for her after that. I mean, okay, she's like 10 years older than me so it's not like I ever thought of her having any sort of authority over me because, let's be real here. I was 26 when they got married. So she's just "my dad's wife" otherwise known as "Carol." Which, incidentally, is my dad's mom (my grandma)'s name, and I would think it would be very weird to be like intimate with someone who has a name of someone in your immediate family. Like I could never date anyone named Robert or any derivative thereof, such as Rob or Bob, because that's my dad's name. And my brother. That's just weird to me. I guess it doesn't affect my dad, though, so good on him. But yeah, tangent aside, I was like, "Um ... whatever. You're defriending me over a couple of shits? Okay." I mean, we were cool before that. But now, I just think she's kind of dumb.

And well, you guys all know. Aks doesn't like dumb people.

Part of the problem is the way Facebook forces a singular social context. I don't act the same way with my parents as with my close friends as with my coworkers, but unless I want to jump through hoops setting up contact groups and posting profiles and blahdeblahwhatever I have to figure out how to split the difference because all those social groups are going to see the same post.

I don't filter myself. I never will. There are some things I don't talk about with anyone, though the semi-anonymity of this place has helped me drop a few of my problem bombs here, but there is a lot about me that even my parents don't know. And I'm going to keep it that way. So there is nothing I would say to my FB friends - family, coworkers, HS friends, random Army folks, etc., that I wouldn't say in person.

There is only one person on this planet that I tell absolutely everything. Everyone else gets the watered-down version.

I do have multiple tiers of people set up based on what I want to talk about. It took a few minutes, but once it was set up it was easy to add and remove folks.

I do, too, but I rarely use them. I used it only one time when I was trying to tell my closest friends that I wasn't really in a relationship, I was just tired of random losers from all over the country trying to chat me up like I was totally interested in some long-distance relationship with some guy in Montana.

And for that reason, my relationship status will always stay "In a relationship" no matter how that actually changes. For one thing, I don't feel a need to advertise to everyone when I start or end a relationship. Especially my parents, who, again, I don't tell this shit to. Not until it's serious. I've had two boyfriends that I told my parents about, both of them I was engaged to. I married one of them. Obviously. Shouldn't have, but meh.

I don't need to advertise my love life. If I find someone, I'd rather enjoy that on my own than have my family attempt to validate me by giving me some blessing that hardly matters because guess what? I don't get in relationships to please anyone but me. There is a reason I live so far away from my family.

My family pestered and pestered me to get on FB. I didn't want to but, in the end, it was the "sharing old photos" line that got me. I have the photograph obsession...I even have nightmares about being on vacation and seeing these wonderful things but not having a camera.

Now I'm on f'in FB and the family drama pisses me off. The other day 2 family members message me and tell me they don't like the way my daughter talks on FB. They don't like the sexual comments she makes and if I don't do something about it they are going to take her off their FB.

Then I scan and post photos which is a laborious process and I get the messages that they want me to take certain ones down. FIRST YOU WANT THE GOD DAMN PHOTOS PUT UP SO I TAKE SOME OF MY PRECIOUS TIME TO DO IT AND NOW YOU WANT ME TO TAKE ONLY CERTAIN ONES DOWN......FUCK YOU!

Last April 1st, my wife and I took our relationship status off married. She switched to "in a relationship" with my best friend and I changed my "looking for" to men. Half a dozen people fell for it. It was epic. Sadly my sister announced her real engagement the same day. Nobody "fell for it." She was pretty pissed. XD
