I worked a warehouse job for years up until just recently. The compensation was very similar to what you're describing, which I felt was extremely generous for unskilled labor. Depending on what you're doing, you might be able to get away with wearing headphones and listening to lectures to improve yourself and keep your mind busy while you're doing your otherwise brainless work. That's how I got by.

I am saying this here where none of my facebook friends I've reunited with can hear me.

Your picture - rather than the pic of your newborn - helps a great deal in me identifying that I know you. In my life I have likely met thirty or forty different women named "Jennifer" and one non-fictitious Alfred. It is easier for me to remember Alfred because there is only one Alfred to draw upon, even if I last saw him 14 years ago.

Alfred incidentally used the baby method, too, but again his name is Alfred, which means I know you or you're Bruce Wayne's butler. Had his name been John or Jason he'd be thrown into serious question

I joined facebook in response to the whole Japan quake as a means of finding people. Since my name is a rare one reserved for actors that play old hobbits, white wizards and Sith emperors, I'm kinda hard to miss. The fact I don't shut up about video games only further confirms I am who I say I am. I use my face pic anyway.

I hate it when people use pictures of their children on FB. It seems creepy somehow, especially if their status updates aren't the sort of things a baby would say. As illustrated in this Oatmeal strip.

In other news, right now I am sad that my delicious roast chicken isn't going to be done for a while, because seriously this thing is freaking delicious.

I'll admit it, I'm the horrible photo tagger. I think it has more to do with OCD than anything though. If your shoulder is in a picture, you're tagged god damn it!! lol

So I came home today and was told that my Grandmother died.

I only had the briefest flicker of an emotional response followed by the thought: "oh crap, now I have to go to the funeral so I don't look like a complete asshole".

Somehow I knew this would play out this way. My Grandmother's mind has been gone for years and as such Gradma's been dead to me for quite a few years now. I never really mourned properly, but the arrival of her physical death didn't phase me in the slightest aside from disrupting my work schedule quite a bit.

More than the funeral I'm dreading the forced interaction with my relatives because I honestly don't have anything to discuss with them and it will inevitably make for awkward conversations. I really hate being social.

Well, I'm sorry for your loss, but I understand your reaction as well. When a loved one languishes like that for a long time, you kind of say your goodbyes long before they're actually gone.

And I totally relate to having to go to the funeral and deal with your family. I'm dreading the deaths of some of my family members - and they're coming - for that reason. If I don't show, I'm a fuckwad, if I do, I'm subject to criticism of every decision I've ever made. I'm not looking forward to it.
