Raydeus: Go buy real lumines for PSP or PS2. It's also probably on PSN.

I wish I had a "weird Japan thing that kinda pisses me off, but mostly just haha weirdness in tokyo!" anecdote for today, but the only thing that comes to mind was some weird behavior on the train. As in weird to the point where it was clear pretty quickly that the guy was just mentally troubled. Not funny at all.

I-- I hate being pressure washed when I'm trying to get into my house? That almost happened, but since it didn't I don't think I get to complain about it.

Stupid people talking about economics and other stupid stuff who think they're bloody brilliant and that you're the stupid one because you don't fall on your knees worshiping their brilliance.

          /dies

There are two issues here that brought this up. One is the healthcare system, more specifically the cost of drugs and such. Some people, well heck, almost everyone I talk to think that taxes should be raised or a new tax created. I think it should be tackled from the supply side, increase supply of drugs, let more competing firms into the market, destroy monopolies etc etc. I would also find a way to reduce doctor's salaries, and possibly others, and reduce the cost of operations. Actually, the whole healthcare system needs changing. You should never be asking someone "How much do you want to pay to either save your life or live pain free?"

But the important thing is that FAR too many people see something and immediately think to raise taxes. Bad stupid narrow sighted thinking.

The other thing is stuff to do about sources of energy. People blithely say, "Gas prices going up? We'll just use alternative sources of energy! Yeah! Electric cars! Hydrogen cells! It's WAY more environmentally friendly!"

          Really? REALLY?!

It's been awhile since I wrote a paper on this, but as I recall something like 70% of all energy in the U.S, if not more, is generated by coal burning plants. I think it was a total of 18% of energy was produced through other means, such as hydro/solar/wind power, with about 11% through hydro power. So basically what this means is to shovel more coal on the fire. Oh yeah, so economically friendly here. Also, where do you get the hydrogen for fuel cells? I think that's electrolysis isn't it? Also uses electricity doesn't it? Where does electricity come from?

As far as I know, if people want clean power then it needs to be nuclear power, but people don't want that for some reason. They seem to think it's dangerous and stuff. However I'll point out that France has been nuclear powered since what, the 1950s or '60's I think? I also only know of two nuclear reactor meltdowns in the world though I have not really looked into that. Toss in the fact that almost every warship in the U.S is nuclear powered, yeah. I'm under the impression that nuclear power is rather safe.

Anyway, there are many ways to solve economic problems, some of these fixes are healthy for the economy, some of them not. It also depends on what school of economic thought you fall into. But the important thing is that there is no one "right" solution to things.

You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be misqouted and then used against you.

I don't have a big ego, it just has a large mouth.

"well, I don't know how to do it, but we should do this! It sounds nice!"

As I recall, Chernobyl was the only "real" meltdown, but I can't remember if that was classified as a meltdown, since it was a fire unrelated to the operations of the plant itself that triggered it.

Three-mile island was almost a meltdown, and resulted in one of the towers being shut down.

I do, however, agree with the premise that Nuclear is by and large the safest form of energy generation, and can produce far higher quantities of energy than other environmentally safe methods. The reason most people don't want it I think is because if a problem occurs, it can have VERY large and long term ramifications on the environment and those around. Plus, there's the question of where we put the spent fuel rods for the next 5 million years.

I don't know man, the sun is like certain female body parts. I can't stand to look at it for more than a few seconds, and hell if I know how it works, but I know it just does and that's good enough for me.

Either that happens or else the price of whatever good is being taxed goes up to cover said tax. Or else if it's a general tax there is a chance of everything going up in price a bit. Does it happen often? Not really. My point is however that there is more than one way to do something other than simply raising taxes.

Plus, there's the question of where we put the spent fuel rods for the next 5 million years.
We can reprocess the spent fuel rods, I really don't know why we don't. For all I know it could be cheaper just to make more of them.

My peeve today is secrets and the lies they lead to.

My sister asked me today why I stopped working for a while after I got married. I just said the same pat answer that I've been telling for years, my husband wanted me to stop. After I got off the phone, I thought about it. Why did I lie? Because its been a secret for so many years that its a natural response. I hate lies and I hate the secrets behind them. I called her back. I told her the real reason that I stopped working for a while, I came home from work one night to find that my hubby had turned my 2 year old daughters face into a huge purple grape because he beat her.

My family's history has been built on secrets and lies to cover those secrets. I've been bucking the status quo for many years now by not sticking to calling my sister "Aunt" because its a secret that she's my mothers daughter and not my grandmothers daughter. Now the family has accepted that this is no longer a secret because I forced the issue. And there are so many more secrets too but sometimes I still get caught up in them and it makes me angry. My new resolution is to remedy this by coming clean about things when the time comes, like todays talk with my sister. Of course, my sister could care less what the real reason was but I feel better that I corrected it and thats all that matters.

Depleted uranium for ammuniation that is being used today in Afghanistan. DU ammo has been used for quite a while now and no one ever mentions those. People like to just hear what they want to hear and then they keep the "trivial" stuff away from the public until something big comes up ... So far we have been fortunate that we haven't come to that bridge yet to worry about that crossing. Or ... have we?

Edit: And after you read that bit, remember that this was just results from the first (1991) GW where we weren't there for that long of a period. We've been in Iraq and Afghan far longer and thus the exposure risks go through the roof as well as potential for a lot of heatlh issues.

Depleted uranium - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Increased rates of immune system disorders and other wide-ranging symptoms, including chronic pain, fatigue and memory loss, have been reported in over one quarter of combat veterans of the 1991 Gulf War.[84] Combustion products from depleted uranium munitions are being considered as one of the potential causes by the Research Advisory Committee on Gulf War Veterans' Illnesses, as DU was used in 30 mm and smaller caliber machine-gun bullets on a large scale for the first time in the Gulf War. Veterans of the conflicts in the Persian Gulf, Bosnia and Kosovo have been found to have up to 14 times the usual level of chromosome abnormalities in their genes.[85][86] Serum-soluble genotoxic teratogens produce congenital disorders, and in white blood cells causes immune system damage.[87]

Human epidemiological evidence is consistent with increased risk of birth defects in the offspring of persons exposed to DU.[10] A 2001 study of 15,000 February 1991 U.S. Gulf War combat veterans and 15,000 control veterans found that the Gulf War veterans were 1.8 (fathers) to 2.8 (mothers) times more likely to have children with birth defects.[88] After examination of children's medical records two years later, the birth defect rate increased by more than 20%:

"Dr. Kang found that male Gulf War veterans reported having infants with likely birth defects at twice the rate of non-veterans. Furthermore, female Gulf War veterans were almost three times more likely to report children with birth defects than their non-Gulf counterparts. The numbers changed somewhat with medical records verification. However, Dr. Kang and his colleagues concluded that the risk of birth defects in children of deployed male veterans still was about 2.2 times that of non-deployed veterans."[89]
In early 2004, the UK Pensions Appeal Tribunal Service attributed birth defect claims from a February 1991 Gulf War combat veteran to depleted uranium poisoning.[90][91] Children of British soldiers who fought in wars in which depleted uranium ammunition was used are at greater risk of suffering genetic diseases such as congenital malformations, commonly called "birth defects," passed on by their fathers. In a study of U.K. troops, "Overall, the risk of any malformation among pregnancies reported by men was 50% higher in Gulf War Veterans (GWV) compared with Non-GWVs."[92]

The U.S. Army has commissioned ongoing research into potential risks of depleted uranium and other projectile weapon materials like tungsten, which the U.S. Navy has used in place of DU since 1993. Studies by the U.S. Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute conclude that moderate exposures to either depleted uranium or uranium present a significant toxicological threat.[93]

One particular subgroup of veterans which may be at higher risk comprises those who have internally retained fragments of DU from shrapnel wounds. A laboratory study on rats produced by the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute showed that, after a study period of 6 months, rats treated with depleted uranium coming from implanted pellets, comparable to the average levels in the urine of Desert Storm veterans with retained DU fragments, had developed a significant tendency to lose weight with respect to the control group.[94]

Substantial amounts of uranium were accumulating in their brains and central nervous systems, and showed a significant reduction of neuronal activity in the hippocampus in response to external stimuli. The conclusions of the study show that brain damage from chronic uranium intoxication is possible at lower doses than previously thought. Results from computer-based neurocognitive tests performed in 1997 showed an association between uranium in the urine and "problematic performance on automated tests assessing performance efficiency and accuracy."[95]

In 2003 Professor Brian Spratt FRS, chairman of the Royal Society's working group on depleted uranium, said: "The question of who carries out the initial monitoring and clean-up is a political rather than scientific question," and "the coalition needs to acknowledge that depleted uranium is a potential hazard and make in-roads into tackling it by being open about where and how much depleted uranium has been deployed." [9]

So yeah, I may need to buy a new phone depending on what happens after this thing charges up. Go me!

But hey I was 2/3 of the way to getting max score, and at least it wasn't the Blackberry!

                              I'm such a dumbass... orz

                              Edit > Never mind, the phone worked perfectly after charging up for a bit. Heck it didn't even have a scratch, just some dirt on the batery cover which is rubber-ized, so that might've saved it. No idea how it landed that way, but I'm going to stay clear from twitchy games on the cellphone from now on. <_<;

Feba, as you probably know, is disgustingly fat. Lost about 40 pounds in the past year, hopefully losing more here but I don't have easy access to a scale.

Still, Feba's fatness, bad as it is, is of the "I have a large gut and moobs" variety, not the "my entire body is significantly wider in order to accommodate all of this luggage" variety. He loathes the fact that he let himself get so out of control, and loathes fat people who do nothing about it and act like there's nothing wrong with it.

It is hard to get more annoying though than one of those very fat people associating themselves with you. Yes, we're both fat. We're both around the same weight? What? How much do you weigh?

I couldn't help but laugh at the response. You're only heavier than me by, about, you know, eighty pounds. I apologized for laughing, but seriously man. I don't look anywhere near that bad.
