Servers. For real, this one has been pissing me off for weeks.

A co-worker and I ended up wiping it completely a little over a week ago and began rebuilding it from scratch. Things were going fine until I realized my co-worker had utterly buggered up the partitions by installing everything on the same partition as the OS, leaving the other two completely empty while the C: drive has already hit half of its capacity. We ran into this problem with the last setup as well, which caused the server to become horribly neglected and crippled. Naturally I decided I had better fix this now rather than waiting for it to completely screw us over a few months down the line.

We had Parition Commander laying around so I popped that in and decided to just redo the whole RAID as one partition. I suspect Mhurron will come in here and tell me what a horrible idea that is, but honestly I don't trust people to make use of multiple logical partitions responsibly, so better to have one big one than to have three smaller ones of which only the first one gets used. Anyway, it looked like everything went down fine as all the partitions merged into one super partition of a whopping 200GB...yeah our servers are sad like that.

Unfortunately once it rebooted, check disk decided it wanted to run. It also decided to "replace invalid security id with default security id"...on every single file in the system. Now Windows Server 2008 won't boot. Instead I get a black screen with a mouse arrow I can move around for hours of entertainment. So far the repair utilities on the install disc have been useless, as has a full day of googling. It seems Microsoft has been rather shady when addressing this issue.

I've also tried making use of a few of the utilities on Hiren's Boot CD, but no luck there either.

I'm at the end of my rope here.

I'm TGM's son. (TGM - he does this for a living. I let him use my account for this post but I have read it first before posting it.) Just for some background on me I work for a technical college in the Milwaukee area, and I run 5 servers. I have had the fun of doing this on 2 HP servers, but I also have done working with deployment and wim'ing. Two of my servers were setup with 2 300GB drives in raid 1 (which when running it as a virtual server doesn't give much room for any virtual machines) so I had to change it to Raid 0 like you did. But here is where we did it differently. You used software to repartition your dives, but my solution is a bit longer but will resolve your issue the next time you are in the same problem, plus it is all free and this method can be used in WDS deployment which if company does massive system cloning it could save them a bit of money. You just need to read up on win pe disc making and the wim'ing process (I have made a screen cast with a bunch of useful links to articles of information). Anyways I wimmed up the 2008 partition and then did the hardware raid change, booted back into the win pe disc and redeployed the wim to the new 600gb raid and fixed the bcd and it rebooted successfully. Redoing partitions in software on a boot drive is always a hit and miss thing.

Btw 200gb raid is massive fail, lmao just messing with you. Our new server is dual quad xeon 2.4 ghz with 32gb of pc16000 ram and raid 5 (4 300 gb 10k drives).

Oh, I wouldn't trust my dog on my account. I just found it entertaining. Also I think your son is about the only family member you haven't said lots about. But I'm not really very sarcastic there-- far too many people place far too much trust in assholes simply on the basis of genetic similarity.
