No, there was student loan stuff in the 'Health Care and Education Reconcilliation Act of 2010'. If you're going to bash on a piece of legislation, bash on the correct one. It's no surprise at all that the reconcilliation act includes Education funding, as Reconcilliation is a budgetary process. This isn't "student loan reform hidden in health care", this is a budgetary bill with provisions for both.

Yeah I would have been glad to wait on hold if it had been less than five minutes. Try 45 ... while I was extremely busy at work. If it's so important that you're going to interrupt me on a busy day (Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday AM usually, sometimes Friday PM), then you'd better not tie me up for more than ten minutes. Hold time included.

Hell, it's not even the audacity to call me and expect me to hold (though it is asking quite a lot, in my book, when I didn't ask you to contact me to begin with), as much as it's the fact that you were apparently so busy on your end that you couldn't even get to me in a timely fashion. I can handle long hold times when I'm the one calling, but if you're calling me, that hold time better be pretty freaking snappy.

Same thing, really. Saying the entire name if it doesn't change the fact this was pushed more largely as health care reform. That was the primary issue. That's what everyone was concerned with. That's what democrats were committing political suicide over. That's what they 'were doing all the back room deals, armtwisting and such over.

The fact remains Sallie Mae is actually quite affected by the passage of the legislation. They're #1 in the student loan market. It was designed to affect them, so it wouldn't surprise me that they've been contacting customers as what affects them affects their customers.

Totally why I don't keep a land line anymore. Against the rules to hassle cell phone users in that way. Only companies that can call me in this fashion are the ones I permit to do so by submitting my number to them. I don't speak to anyone I don't do business with. Worst it gets is some local political polling and that's really just around election time.

Keeping Aks on the line for 45 mins, though, yeah, I would have hung up after about 10 minutes. If its that important, they'll call again another day because you'll be flagged as not responded to.

            No. It's entirely different.

No, it wasn't. That was an entirely different bill.

That was a completely separate bill, with a completely separate purpose. Saying that the HCR bill contains student loan changes is simply wrong.

By the way, BBQ, that reconcilliation bill fixed a lot of what you are complaining about; see: Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Feba, kindly stop trying to distract the subject. I said it affected student loans. Anything else is irrelevant.

But if you seriously believe this bill "fixed" most issues I have with it, you're wrong

This is why there are now 14 states filing a lawsuit against the federal government.

Exclusive Powers of the National Government

Under the Constitution, powers reserved to the national government include:

                      Print money (bills and coins)
                      Declare war
                      Establish an army and navy
Enter into treaties with foreign governments
Regulate commerce between states and international trade
Establish post offices and issue postage
Make laws necessary to enforce the Constitution
                      Exclusive Powers of State Governments
Powers reserved to state governments include:

                      Establish local governments
Issue licenses (driver, hunting, marriage, etc.)
Regulate intrastate (within the state) commerce
                      Conduct elections
Ratify amendments to the U.S. Constitution
Provide for public health and safety
Exercise powers neither delegated to the national government or prohibited from the states by the U.S.
Constitution (For example, setting legal drinking and smoking ages.)

Under this bill If you do not buy health insurance you get fined, your tax returns get gobbled up or you get jail time.

You have to buy a product by federal law just because you exist. This is not a power the federal government has. And if they think that's OK, what other rights do you think they'll try to stomp all over next?

If they can bypass the power of the states, why even have states? If they can do that, why to the powers afforded to the states even matter? Our system was designed to prevent the centralization of the federal government.

If your phones are linked to your cell phones in any way, that's probably the loophole.

No. You said that the health care bill had student loan changes hidden in it, which we're only finding out about because it was passed prematurely. Stop trying to change the subject to "Why the HCR congress passed is bad"-- what you clearly said was "Yes, there was student loan stuff in the health care reform bill.", and then "this was pushed more largely as health care reform.". Don't fall back on "but... tyranny!" when you're wrong.

                          Known exceptions
Placing one's number on the National Do Not Call Registry will stop most, but not all, unsolicited calls. The following are exceptions granted by existing laws and regulations.
The registry only applies to residential lines, not to business lines.
A person may still receive calls from political organizations.
The organization Citizens for Civil Discourse has lobbied Congress to close this loophole by developing a National Political Do Not Call Registry where voters can register their phone numbers and ask politicians to take the "Do Not Contact Pledge". Its database is not backed by the force of law and as of November 2008, only 3 politicians running for office signed the pledge.
A person may still receive calls from charities.
A person may still receive calls from those conducting surveys.
A person may still receive calls from companies with which he or she has an existing business relationship for up to 18 months after his or her last purchase, payment, or delivery from it, unless person specifically asks the company not to call again.
A person may still receive calls from a company up to three months after submitting an application or inquiry to that company, unless the company is specifically asked not to call.
A person may still receive calls from bill collectors (either primary creditors or collection agencies). These callers are, however, regulated by other laws, such as those limiting them to calling during "reasonable hours." Some creditors may not call debtors who file for bankruptcy protection.

                          Loopholes
Some attempts have been made by telemarketers to skirt the do-not-call list rules. An example is the Dove Foundation which places "survey" calls and then requests permission for a follow-up call. The follow-up call is through a for-profit company attempting to sell products. This operation resulted in a restraining order in Missouri in March 2006.

The past two days I received a phone call that has an automated interface/format whatever. It told me my check card was disabled and if this was done in error I needed to press 1. I went ahead and pressed 1 the first time because they aren't getting info from that, but then it wanted me to enter my full card number. Yeah right! The part that annoys me the most is they called my cell phone, and very few people have that number so I consider any call on it important.
