  • Re: What's your pet peeve in RL?

It worries me that we need the "technically" there.

Another RL Pet Peeve: All of the unnecessary packaging that comes with stuff you buy at the store. I don't need all this paper, plastic and cardboard.

Sorry but b/f's/husbands/partners of any sort that won't get a job and are totally able to work = drop 'em like a hot potato! LOL

It's not always advantageous for both people in a relationship to have jobs.

If you don't want someone who isn't working, of course you shouldn't get into that sort of relationship, but don't knock people for their lifestyles.

It depends on circumstances. Having someone as a homemaker can be useful for some people, taxes and other financial things can be simplified or even improved, and so on. I'm not saying it's for everyone or appropriate in every circumstance, but for some people it honestly does work better.

You don't really need someone in the "homemaker" role when there aren't any children involved. Financial things are improved by having dual incomes. I can agree with simplified, though.

Need is subjective, though. And actually, I've seen demonstrations of a few different circumstances where it actually costs more, or nearly as much to have both people working than to have one not working.

Commutes come to mind, or maybe if you have only one car and you must rely on mass transit to get the other person to their job ...

Just grasping here. I know it costs $80 right now to fill up my truck, and I fill it once a week. That's a hefty portion of my budget.

Yet to live in this country (UK) both of you need to be bread winners to be able to survive for the first few years.

I worked it out how much it costs for a couple to live in the UK per month based on my own expenses...

£600 Morgage payment for 2 bed house and insurance.
£300 on one car for fuel, tax, insurance and repairs.
£250 on food for the pair of you (food costs here is rediculous its the equivilent of $6 for 3 litres of milk now)
£125 on gas electricity and water rates
£110 on council tax (to pay for all municiple services and the police and fire brigade)
£85 for telephone, internet (includes mobile) and TV liscence.

                        Total = £1470 a month.

Now I earn £1100 a month after tax, national insurance, studentloan payment and pention deduction.

If my GF wasn't working, we couldn;t afford to live.

The figures above are not including havign a life, buying bday and xmas presents, goign on holiday, haveing a drink or even getting things for the house or yourself.

Int eh Uk it is very difficult to have only one person providing for the household unless they are on a very good wage. its why we have the largest citizen debts int eh whole of europe with an average of £7000 debt per person (this is not taking into account debt caused by morgages, just credit cards, overdrafts and loans)

You may have an easy life over there in the US (of which to be honest I'm sure many don't) but things will change. Feba it is not easy anymore to have just one of you working, you can't bleed off teh state all your life and in fact future predictions are that the state or governments will be providing less for people as they become more and more in debt. I know our government is billions of pounds in debt.

A word of warning, the reason the food is so expensive here now is due to our fuel costs skyrocketing. its now £1.03 a litre here ($2.05) and its mean to go up by 5 pence (10c) a litre by the end of this year. As fuel prices go up, so does food due to teh cost to transport it going up. As your fuel prices go up in America of which they will especially as oil has passed the $100 a barrell mark your food will noticably go up. Its happened here and its very noticable in the simple everyday foods like milk, eggs, bread etc which oin the last 3 years have doubled in cost.

So yeah my pet peave is the cost of living here in the UK and me trying to survive on a shoe string.

But that is more than offset by the extra income that the second job brings. I mean, if you're only making $50 a week, sure, it's not going to do that, but in that case, why the hell are you bothering to work there?

Mass transit is pretty inexpensive. Certainly cheaper than $80/tank of gas (seriously, that's depressing. I'd get a new car.)

I mean, I have been working and paying my own way since I was 17. I have lived in both dual income and single income situations. And I can say without a doubt that it is always easier to have two, unless the second income is of a negligible amount.

It's a 24 gallon tank, and I run it till it's pretty much on "E" every time. I like to buy in bulk, lolz.

And I like my truck Murph, it's 11 years old and it's run forever. And I like it in snow. And mud. And hauling stuff that I couldn't fit in my old Cavalier.

Yes, don't get between a redneck and her truck. I will cry when I have to say goodbye to it forever. I'm attached to it, really attached to it.

There is more to life than money. Being a stay at home parent/partner is very stifling and taxing on your emotional well being. You are often isolated and feel the need for social interaction when your partner would rather stay at home. This creates a lot of pressure in the relationship. Sometimes even if most of your paycheck goes to taxes or child care, it is still in your emotional interest to work and have that sense of accomplishment and social structure.

I was going to mention this as well. Even in situations where one income is enough to feed/clothe/house both people, there are the emotional and social considerations also.
