OCD...trying to get past a part in a game but I missed something a ways back so I went to an earlier save so I could redo it. I'll never get this game done if I keep giving in to my weakness. Its been 2 days of playing for at least 8 hours and I'm back to the point I was 3 days ago.

              Two things this week:

Cyclists. I hate them all. Unlike motorcyclists who actually consider traffic laws, cyclists act like they own the road. I never see these little races they have, I don't know where they occur, all I do know is they love to pick the busiest fucking roads they can find and ride around like they're the most important thing there.

There's this one place across town that's totally perfect for cyclists and Ive seen them gather there to cycle. The busiest time around that area is when shifts switch at the Dell plant - times they're just not going to be there anyway. And its not like they could practically widen the road for a bike lane inthe area I live, space is already at a premium and there's this giant chuch in the center of it all with a massive congregation coming out of it on Sunday and Wednesday, along with being open all week for other things. It has a gym and private school, too.

So its not like you can just widen the road, there's already plenty of traffic because of that church

The other peeve this week is just one of those things you might carelessly do yourself at times. I think this is the second or third time I've done it.

I forgot to take the cardboard off the bottom of the pizza before putting it in the oven. This does not cause a fire like one might think it would, but rather, it just means that all but the bottom of the pizza gets cooked well. Its edible, but you'll need a fork.

I have a similar peeve with myself: putting down something of mine that I am holding for just a moment, to free my hands to do something else . . . an hour later, "wait, didn't I have something else on me earlier?"

Setting stuff down and then forgetting about it plagued me throughout the entire convention I went to last week. I mean, luckily I caught myself well in-time for the most part, but it did cost me a deck that I had obtained there of a card game that just isn't in freaking print any more (and a few of my friends coincidentally also have decks of).

At least the convention was fun. Costly, but fun.

Heh, I've done the pizza thing more times than I care to admit. It's just so easy to forget about it when they come so neatly pre-packaged.

Cyclists on the road are a peeve of mine as well. Technically they're allowed on the road but they honestly have no business being there. They can't keep up with traffic so you end up either crawling along behind them far below the speed limit, or you make dangerous maneuvers in an attempt to pass them without bumping into them. The worst are the ones that ride on the side of the road, not quite in a lane. I'm always afraid I'm going to end up hitting them as I go past. Just stay on the goddamn sidewalks where you belong!

There aren't any sidewalks in so many parts where I would ride. If I had a sidewalk along the road where my apartment complex is, I'd so use it.

I don't ride my bike that much around my apartment complex though, because these drivers are horrible. Between college kids and old people I'm not sure which is worse, but my guy and I will load the bikes in the back of the truck and take to the trail - and it's a good one, several miles of trail, all of it well off the road, with frequent water stops.

I would ride my bike to and from work if it became a necessity but honestly, fuck riding on traffic-filled roads if I can help it.

Sidewalks are primarily for pedestrians. Riding a bike on a sidewalk anywhere they're actually used has a pretty good chance of causing injury, either to other cyclists traveling on the sidewalk, or to pedestrians. Not helped by the fact that lots of pedestrians nowadays are wearing headphones, and thus may not hear an approaching bike, which they wouldn't be expecting because bikes generally belong on the damn road.

Bikes are vehicles, and they have every bit as much a right to the road as scooters, motorcycles, sedans, and semis; except where otherwise marked, such as interstates. And yes, some bike riders are assholes; most of them are just trying to ride safely, because there's a bit more penalty for the bicyclist in a collision than there is for a driver.

Generally speaking, a good cyclist will stay as far to the right as they can without entering the gutter or biking over debris. They do this specifically because they know they're slow, and people will want to pass them. But surprise surprise, you're never promised that you won't get stuck behind someone slow on the highway, whether they're Amish people driving a buggy, people riding horses, people with farm or construction equipment, people towing a heavy load, or whatever else. And yes, I live in a major metropolitan area, and I've been stuck behind people on bikes as well as people on horses, people in giant trucks that can't accelerate, city buses, construction and farm equipment, and plenty of other things. If you can't share the road, that's your issue; it's there for far more than allowing a way for sedans to get around.

Also BBQ, lots of people riding bikes-- even if they look like they're in a racing outfit-- are doing it for transportation. Again, they're entitled to use the roadways to get around just as much as anyone else. Lots of serious cyclists ride to work in their gear, and then shower and change at work, or a nearby gym. Keeps their work clothes from getting sweaty, and I'd assume people like cycling gear because it works. If you actually go into a bike shop, you'd see that that's just what biking clothes look like a lot of the time.

If they're slowing you down that much, find another roadway you can use, or petition for a bike lane to be added (trust me, it's a possibility. You'd be amazed where you can find the space. I live near a very, very narrow road that's planned for expansion into a four lane. I see at least one place where it looks like they'll be on someone's porch. But the city already has it completely planned out.). Or drive a smaller vehicle yourself so that you have room to get by them. There's no responsibility, nor should there be, to go fast on the road, so long as you aren't intentionally or recklessly impeding traffic. But I promise you that that bicyclist isn't going down a narrow road with no bike lane because he enjoys having people driving thousands of pounds of metal (many of whom are plainly incompetent) right behind him, wanting to go faster. There's a reason he's taking that road.

Feba, I'm not saying they don't have a right to be there, because they do. What I'm saying is that it's not practical or safe.

There's one road near my house that's a fairly busy road. 35 mph speed limit with most cars barreling through at 45 with massive congestion. Most of the bikes that stray from the sidewalk and into the street can barely reach 25. It's an accident waiting to happen pure and simple.

This isn't a personal problem on my end, this is the traffic in the area simply not being conducive to safe cycling. The majority of cyclists take to the sidewalks, but there are still a few who try to make use of the 400 odd feet of bike lane that's really just a line painted by the gutter, the traffic lanes are still the same so it affords no real room for the bikers.

People who ignore common sense when it comes to US freeway traffic. These come from my fairly long experience as a delivery driver in a couple different

                          Basically, I have 3 rules/policies:

                          1) Lead, follow, or get out of the way. If you're hanging in the left lane and you see someone coming up on you fairly quick, move over to the right. I know sometimes traffic won't let you; I'm not asking for you to merge into a gap barely larger than your car. But, if nobody else is around, move the hell over.

                          2) Pick a speed and go it. Virtually all cars these days come with a cruise control, and it doesn't take a PhD to operate. Not only does it make people not hate you, it also improves fuel efficiency. Saving money and living, that's a winning combination.

                          3) Ramps. They're wonderful things: they allow for access from surface streets to limited-access roads, and allow you to slow down when you're going at substantial speeds so you can make it back onto those surface streets without flipping your car around a 90 degree turn. However, probably the most important part of a ramp is to keep people who are already ON the freeway from running your ass over. When you hit 30 at the top of the ramp, you're doing it wrong. You should be at LEAST 55 when the speed limit is 65.

Finally, I'm curious why people who are from out of the state insist on driving significantly faster than anyone else on the freeway. As TGM can attest to, cops around us have enough places to hide, and there are even areas that you wouldn't even THINK about speeding, lest you get a nasty ticket. It drives me nuts to have people riding my ass when I'm already 10 over, and see them fly off in the distance. In those instances, I wish a cop would pop out behind the tall grass that grows in the median.

As a side note... why exactly am I seeing out of state plates everywhere? This week I can understand, but I'm talking about every OTHER week. As I said before, there's nothing that would interest anybody from outside the state... so why does it seem sometimes like there are more out of state than local people?

The biggest issue with cyclists on the roads is that most roads are not built to accommodate them, which is unfortunate. They definitely do not belong on the sidewalk. I don't know why on earth anyone would think that. Sidewalks are for pedestrians. If a cyclist is lucky, they live somewhere with bike lanes. Otherwise, they have to do the best they can with what they have, and hope some asshole motorist doesn't kill them.

People may be broke. I moved and I didn't change my tags over for nearly two years because I didn't have the extra money to spend to do it. (It cost 87 bucks for the tag itself, a $200 fee for being a "first time" Florida tag owner, and another $90 to change my title from PA to FLA ... and they pretty much had to, since my maiden name was still on the old title.) So I was living and driving in Florida with PA tags for nearly two years.

Now I'm broke again, and kinda wishing I hadn't spent that money.

Not being safe isn't their fault, it's the fault of people not using the road responsibly. And obviously if they're doing it, it's practical for them. Oh, and another thing you can do to help out with bikes inconveniencing you? Make other drivers more aware of them, and their right to share the road. I've heard of cyclists riding side by side instead of in a line. Obviously that makes it harder to pass them, and that's not really fun for the cyclists themselves either. But they do it for visibility, because lots of drivers don't think about anything else on the road. Improved education on biking is a two way street, too-- when more people are aware of how to behave around bikes, they're also aware of how they should behave when they're on one, and vice versa.

There are plenty of other countries, and even some cities in the US, where riding a bike is normal and considered perfectly safe, because people are aware of them and drive accordingly.

On out of state plates, one of my neighbors had a car with Alaska tags parked out the other week. I'd like to know what the hell was up with that.
