The problem I see is that both sides of these arguments tend to take place in echo chambers where there is no room for dissenting opinions of any sort.

What I'm trying to point out, is that it's okay to have a debate as long as you aren't threatening to repeatedly stick something in someone for being on the other side of the debate, no matter how much you dislike them.

Frankly I'm just exhausted by all these issues immediately descending into nothing more than vitriol whenever they come up. It makes me despise both sides, which isn't a good outcome for anyone.

4chan's new game is white guys with minority sockpuppets since the gamergate hashtag is on the downtrend, the new one they're peddling is #notyourshield. Interesting, since I don't see sites picking up minority groups to shield themselves, but I guess asking for more inclusivity is so much of a threat that sockpuppets are necessary to save games

Jake Kaufman is begging to be put on the SJW list and wants to make a remix album of female character themes now, so there's a silver lining here.

The main problem I see with feminism right now is that a huge majority of the male population (and a pretty good percentage of the female population) doesn't understand what feminism actually is.

Feminism is not the hatred of men. That's called misandry. Feminism is not a movement to take anything away from men, except maybe the perceived "right" to a woman's body that so many of them have. Feminism is a woman's right to be herself without argument - to shave or not, to game or not, to have power or not, to have a family or not. Women are in a place where they can do many things, but they are often met with heavy criticism and abuse for their choices. And (this is a huge one) a woman's right to say "no" without harassment, and let me tell you, I don't understand why the fuck this is still even an issue.

I don't personally understand why men tend to feel threatened by a strong woman. They are literally afraid that by women gaining something bearing semblance to equal rights, that means that something of theirs will be taken away. Literally the only thing women (in general) want men (in general) to lose is the attitude that women's bodies are meant for their pleasure, which sounds archaic, but is actually a real and current problem. It's certainly not limited to video games, either. There's a reason my gender rarely comes up when I'm playing WoW, and if I do feel the need to "out" myself, I also age myself considerably. (I use TGM's thing, actually. I ask them if they've got a grandmother, and if they'd speak to their grandmother the way they are speaking to me. It's super effective.)

As far as SJWs, they get a bad name because, like most movements, there's a huge vocal minority full of assholes who take offense to everything and make everything about coddling people. "Don't say that word, you'll trigger me!" comes to mind, and some things are valid, like rape, incest, or suicide, while others are just ridiculous honestly, and I do think a lot of them need to get a bit stronger and learn that the world isn't going to coddle you.

I enjoy tumblr, which is where a lot of the SJW shit originates, but even that kind of crap makes me roll my eyes. There are now blogs that make fun of the people who just take it too far. Yes, institutionalized racism is still a thing. Yes, institutionalized misogyny is still a thing. Yes, institutionalized homophobia is still a thing. But not everything ever is about that.

I just figured I'd throw my two cents in here.

Personally, the fact that people think it's okay to threaten to rape someone - even online - is despicable. That is one of the most vile things you can do to someone, I'd say even worse than murder because although murder ends in death (duh), at least the victim doesn't have to live with that shame their whole life. The online male community is fucking sickening, in general. Yeah, I can take a "go back to the kitchen" joke (with rolled eyes), but telling me that "you're so ugly, I wouldn't even rape you" is fucking demeaning and just vile. Who raises these people?

You might want to explain all of that to the current crop of feminists because these days it seems like it's very much about blaming men for everything and that all important self righteous victimhood. I was reading an article last night where an old school feminist weighed in on the whole gamergate thing and didn't try to crucify the gaming community. The social justice warriors dogpiled on her like she had declared women to be second class citizens. There's a rift between what feminism used to represent and what it has become in the wake of tumblr and the internet in general. It's why I will never self identify as a feminist but will 100% support the notion that basic human decency has no prerequisites.

As for why men are threatened by strong women, it's because we're all secretly very weak and insecure.

Old school feminists are the ones to be the most wary of. Really depends on which side of the 2nd wave we're talking about, given one part of it was willing to throw women of color, lesbians, bisexual and transwomen under the bus to burn bras and advance white women instead.

There are just some who are going to take it to extremes regardless. There was a girl, no lies, who got mad at someone who was just looking at her, and not leering. Looking. Like "caught you in my field of vision" looking. Seriously chica, chill. I mean I guess if the male gaze makes you that uncomfortable then that's your prerogative, but most people actually can look at you as a human being without being threatening.

Granted, the tumblr crowd is mostly under 25. They have a lot of growing up to do, a lot of learning to pick their battles. However, I can't fault their (mostly) teenage passion for changing the world. Being that I'm completely jaded and believe that the world is fucked up beyond repair, I mostly roll my eyes and tolerate it. Which isn't to say that some of them don't absolutely hate all white cisgendered men, because trust me, I deal with plenty of "you're not poc, trans, or gay you are literal scum." Yeah. However, there are now people who bite back at the ones who go out of their way to project hate back at others. So ... it's not so bad, and for the most part, I ignore the stupidity.

That aside, if people turn their nose up at me because I tell them I'm a feminist, then I take that as my chance to educate them on what it actually means.

The whole shitstorm is really too big to make any sort of sense of right now, especially with all of the things flying around with only anecdotal evidance at best. Plus there's all of the Indie Dev flinging shit at each other for... Honestly I don't know why.

Okay, if Zoe Quinn did censor other channels via DCMA notices and takedowns, then hell yes I do condemn her actions since that is fucking stupid, unethical and really makes her no better than the people who are harassing anyone coming out in defence of her. The problem is is that while the Streissand Effect may well be in play here, there is so much going around, it's impossible to make heads of tails of what s actual proof, and what is just the shit being slung around.

Second, if journalists and outlets (Rock, Paper, Shotgun, GiantBomb, Destructoid and Kotaku being the main names flung around, evidence being anecdotal at best for each of these) did provide favourable coverage because of these alleged intimate relations with Quinn, they are fucking idiots for doing it and lose what little integrity those sites have left.

Third, asking for games to be more inclusive literally benefits everyone. What does not benefits everyone is the typical industry bullshit that goes on. Don't get me wrong, I'm more than happy to talk about industry bullshit with anyone. However, that does not mean Ill just rush headlong into a discussion without actually learning he facts and doing the research. There's just too much going on here, and too little of stating solid facts that we have actual evidence for. What also doesn't help is Twitter being the chosen battleground. Twitter is a place only for absolutes due to the character limit making it impossible to post an actual argument on it.

Now if you will excuse me, it's time to continue getting my mind broken by the fact that nobody has mentioned the tech demo that Tekken Team put out for Project Morpheus. What the actual fuck?

I don't agree with her but she does have the right to wear whatever she wants, if she thinks she looks good then more power to her.

Me, I haven't worn a bikini since 2003 because I do not feel even slightly comfortable showing that much skin in public. And I'm not really fat, but I'm fat enough to be uncomfortable showing it.

That's the thing though, it has come to mean a great many things and not all of them are positive or respectable. If all you want is for human beings to treat each other with decency and mutual respect then great, I can get on board with that. Unfortunately that's not the only thing feminism stands for in this day and age.

The more I think about it the more parallels I find between feminism and my falling out with Christianity. The basic teachings of Jesus were pretty straight forward and unambiguously good for everyone: Help each other and don't be a dick. Similarly feminism's primary tenet of "treat women like people...because they are" is pretty difficult to fuck up. However, there is a tremendous amount of evil that has been carried out by Christianity, much like today's feminism is exceedingly toxic to the point of mimicking the forces it claims to be fighting. The underlying principles when boiled down to their core are sound, but the movements have perverted and twisted the message and their followers to the point of being an actively destructive force.
I agree with the original messages of these groups, but I can't in good conscience support the twisted and malignant paths they have taken.
