I know what you mean YM. I've been in a gaming chat group for 25 years and last month when we got together I brought up FFXIV.

Member 1: "FFXI? Are you still playing that? I thought WoW ate it and spit it back out?"

Member 2: "Nah this is FFXIV. Its basically FFXI-2."

Member 1: "Oh great...just great...now thats all we are going to hear about is FFXI-2 crap...LOL"

Me: "F**k both of you" /mode #channel +b

Member 3: "Oh hey.. I LOVE FINAL FANTASY! L...O...V...E it! Don't ban me please!"

Ya my mother is 78 and boy some of the shit that comes out of her mouth....

Honestly its f**king embarrassing. She's a bigot. She doesn't like black people, latinos, asians, mentally handicapped, gay, polish people, irish people, etc. So when you are out and about with her, if she would see something she speaks up...and loudly. We were out at dinner and a gay couple was sitting in a both, both on the same side, and she kept looking at them making huffing noises. (I've laid down the law with her about this shit so she watches what she says more with me than with my other sisters.) But if finally got to her and she said very loudly, "Jeez thats disgusting! I didn't pay to watch 2 men make out. Who knows what they are doing with their hands under that table!" And yes, they heard it. I got up and went to their table and apologized, of course.

But this carries through to my entire extended family too. My kids can't stand family events because of it. Good lord if you all could meet my cousin Brian....you'd rip him to shreds.

I have a reletive who's like your mother. My great grandmother. She just recently turned 99... I know... gettin close to those tripple didgets, huh? Anyway, shes spews flagrantly offensive things from her mouth on what seems like a daily basis. She's starting to lose it, so it's only getting worse. Gay's are the main target. Personally... my wife and I are primarily friends with gay people. We love em, they're fun. My great grandmother (yiayia we call her... since we're Greek) met out friend Joe recently. Now... Joe couldn't hide being gay to save his life. He's the kind of guy you can't take into a curtain store without having to pay the owner for everything that gets burned. That being said, Yiayia was polite to him... and we figured she liked him. After all, he's the one who offered to help us move her into "The Home". (I hate that term... and I hate moving her there).

Is what she told him before we left.

I love my Yiayia... but sometimes... just sometimes I'm ashamed of her.

It always seems to be the old people who are the worst about tolerating people who are different. I knew a guy at college who was fairly homophobic, but he was still perfectly civil around our gay friend. You can hate it or it can make you uncomfortable. That's fine, but you can still be polite about it.

Aren't old people supposed to ramble on about how the current generation is rude and has no respect for anyone? Then why is it always the old people who seem to be rudest about this sort of thing?

There's a difference between Acceptance and Tollerance. IMHO... those people who are homophobic might as well keep their opinions to themselves. You don't have to accept the change... in fact... noone cares if they do. All I think anyone wants if for them to simply tollerate it. Keep your opinions to yourselves.

My (gay) friend Jesse said it best, "These people all have it backwords... poking me in the chest is more likely to turn me on than turn me straight"

We warned him... boy did we warn him. He was ok with it, startled... but ok with it. And don't worry about lauging, that happened over 8 months ago and we still won't let Joe live it down.

If you watched the movie Twilight, you'll remember the part where Edward and Bella walk into school together and Edward says "well, as long as I'm going to hell...", Joe came over to watch it with us. To everyone else it really isnt a funny line, but to us, it struck just the right chord. It was also the start of the "Edward Cullen has been in the closet for decades" jokes.

The "rewind" and "play" buttons on our remote are practically worn off from the playbacks that day.

Since today is looking to be a beautiful day, particularly with a fun (and early-to-start) weekend right on the horizon, I guess my pet peeve is having nothing to complain about when I make a post in the pet peeve thread . . . no, wait, that isn't quite right either, I could just complain about my procrastination.
