Not getting a good night's sleep.

I've been having trouble sleeping all week and it's starting to show. I kinda want to take a nap.

Xanax is wonderful for sleeping restfully through the entire night and waking without a hangover.

Obsessiveness is going back and correcting all the mistakes in the iTunes info on a classical music CD because some dumbass didn't know the difference between a harpsichord and a piano.

No, I would think if it needed new batteries it wouldn't do anything at all. Or at least beep at me every 2 minutes until I change them.

The problem is, and I know this is going to sound ridiculous, I am terrified of them. It's completely irrational and I know this, yet I can not handle or even be near a smoke detector for any length of time without feeling panic set in.

This of course is only aggravated by the fact that in order to do my laundry, I have to stand directly under the thing while I put my clothes in there, something I should have checked for when I was looking to move into this place. So I do my laundry as quickly as possible and do this sprint-like move while I'm scooting away from the smoke alarm. I only wish I were kidding. It's all sorts of ridiculous - and I've been afraid of them since childhood.

And the worst part is I know it's there to protect me, if there's a legit fire and I need to GTFO, so I wouldn't be dumb and live without one (plus I live in an apartment and I had no choice in the matter), I just ... they scare me. A lot. For no reason.

If I had R2-D2 for a smoke detector then I probably wouldn't be afraid of them. Any wall or ceiling mounted device. Even when I lived at home I would walk normally most of the time, but start running or walk much faster when I neared and until I passed the smoke alarm. The fact that they were right by the stairs didn't help ... I'm amazed I didn't kill myself falling down the stairs, looking back.

Even the little light that flashes every few seconds gives me the heebie-jeebies. My heart like jumps in my chest and I just go into full panic-mode. The best kind of smoke detector would be the type that I don't ever even know is there - if they could embed the thing into the wall and keep it camouflaged or hidden in a vent, I would deal with it much better and live in total denial that I even have a smoke detector. In fact, when I buy a house, I'm going to make that like a thing. And I'll pay the fire department to come check it for me, and change my batteries. I'm sure they will love that, crazy lady scared of a little device. But whatever.

Yeah, even the internet hasn't heard of it - quick google showed that this mostly seems to exist in toddlers and dogs. So something I should have outgrown but didn't. Awesome.

Oh, and let's not get it confused with the fear of loud noises - I don't have that. I'm not afraid of fireworks, gunshots, loud music, etc. In fact, I'm not even that affected if it goes off except to open the door and let the house air out. It's all about the device.

To be honest it sounds like a lingering childhood fear. Much like how I'm still occasionally spooked by basements late at night after turning the lights out but before going up the stairs.

Because there's nothing in the dark, right? Nothing waiting for you to turn your back on it. Nothing moving without a sound. Nothing watching you eye the darkness cautiously as you attempt to put it out of your mind. That's the mistake everybody makes. They make themselves disbelieve.

If anything that stealthy is out to kill me, it's definitely going to succeed. No point in worrying about it.
