I'm mostly upset that Obama won for one reason, and one reason only:

Welfare, food stamps, and medicaid. Yes, let's expand these, so that the people already on them have no real incentive to get off of them, and the people who aren't but who are barely afloat will find it more enticing to loaf around jobless because the government will take care of them.

I am not rich by any means, in fact I am just above the poverty line, but I live modestly and I make do. I did use government assistance right after my divorce, for health care for my children, and I was on food stamp assistance for a few months while I was unemployed. But you don't see me gaming the system to stay on these things forever, do you? I used them while I needed them and now I support myself. Working as intended. I have a hard time working 60 fucking hours a week to make ends meet and shipping my dollar to people who aren't willing to do the same. Welfare, food stamps, and medicaid were never meant as long-term support systems, and need to stop being used as such. And the government needs to stop allowing them to be used in such a way.

Unemployment is quite different because you pay into it yourself, as is Social Security (even though that won't last through the boomers, most likely). Old people think that government owes it to them to take care of them, too, but then again, most of them did pay into the system for years and years. I am fully aware that I will be working well past retirement age and that relying on Social Security would be retarded.

This argument was posted on a friend's Facebook last night, and I couldn't believe the people - some of whom were mutual friends - coming to the defense of handouts. One of them was absolutely 100% convinced that there were no jobs, so someone else posted a link to craigslist, monster, and about three other job sites. Then she continued to sputter about how the other posters were racist and didn't understand how it was to be unemployed, even though two of the people arguing against her were both unemployed for quite some time, and both were able to use government assistance as that short-term saving grace instead of a long-term crutch until they got back on their feet.

It's a tool, not a living wage. The sooner people in this country understand that, the better.

And yes, I do believe that paying into it should be optional and not compulsory, as well as everyone on it needs to piss in a cup quarterly. There you go, I created some jobs for you.

Hot button issue for me. I generally am not a political person, but I want the government to keep its hands out of my fucking money as much as possible. When it's going to take my money and give it to someone who won't make any for themselves? Fuck off with that shit. At least when I'm paying for the military and the politicians I do know that they are earning that wage. Watching soap operas while smoking a doobie isn't earning shit. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's entitlement.

Rant off ... back to our regularly scheduled peeves. (Though I'm betting this will spark a debate ... which I don't like ... I am bad at debates. This is just how I feel.)
