Man you're getting fucked by MA law twice in one week, I say move.

In seriousness, that sucks man. I don't know what to tell you. I don't know the first thing about unions.

I'd say go with the ironworkers since the electricians already turned you down earlier. On the other hand, being an electrician sounds like it'd be less exhausting.

Glad I don't have to make that call, that's a tough one.

I have a little over 2 weeks to make my choice and I've found myself builidng pro/con charts in my spare time.

        Electricians Pros:
        Easier work
        Less physically hazardous
        Work mostly indoors

        Electricians Cons:
Longer wait before I can start
Bigger gamble based on their prior rejection
Eliminates my chances at the Ironworkers

        Ironworkers Pros:
        Start sooner
        More overtime
Father-in-law can probably get me in

        Ironworkers Cons:
        Work mostly outside
        Work is harder
        Work is more dangerous

The way it stands right now, I'm leaning towards the Ironworkers. The only thing truely holding me back is the variable of not knowing for certain if he can get me in. If his guarentee falls flat and he cant get me in, I'm out of luck until this time next year for both unions... likely in the same dilema as I am right now.

The only reason I'm even bothering to lean towards Ironworking is because I would potentially start sooner. That's it. It's really that simple.

Ironworker I gather is a steel fixer / errector in the uk.

Just a thought for your head. Steelworks are quiet / busy depending on how the construction industry is going at the time, if noone is building theirs no work for you.

Sparkies (electricians) everyone will always need one, not jsut for new build and refurbs but standard domestic things like re-wires, sorting out elecytrical problems in peoples homes etc. it is a more guaranteed permanent work no matter what the construction industry is like i.e. in rescession or not. same with plumbers, their always needed.

I want to go with electrical... but given that they rejected me once already... and I have yet to fulfill the requirements they originally rejected me for... I have a hard time believing they'll take me.

Were you not jerked around on some kind of union deal like that before? I seem to remember you fussing about something you'd have to reapply to. Maybe it was someone else I'm thinking of but it sounds similar. The hiring words I tend to look for are "when can you start" and not "please submit another application next year" or "pay this fee and we'll look into it."

Netflix doesn't work on Linux. That defeats half the point of having a web app. What really kills me is that there's already an open source port of Microsoft Silverlight.

Is Netflix not an option for your Wii or do you not have one? There really isn't a console or handheld/mobile that doesn't do Netflix by now.

When I applied to upgrade my nursing rank I was denied at first, I re applied once the position hadn't been filled. I hadnt really improved since they last saw me other than turning in and doing my job.
I got accepted and was told I was rejected the first time to see if I really wanted it and would come back.
It may be worth trying again.

Going to go with my gut on this one. If you like heavy manual labor do Iron. If not then don't bother with it, I am not sure what kind of work your doing but I've done welding before and it's not fun. I've temporarily lost my eyesight twice because of Arc Flash. But in the end I am now certified in MIG TIG and Oxy. It pays well and you will be working to the bone so when you get home don't expect any real time to yourself because you'll more than likely be too busy recuperating from the workload. Requires a lot of stamina due to heavy lifting and yes injuries have happened. Like I said I don't know what type of work you'll be doing with the Ironwork but I am sure it's not going to be fun. After I got my certification I debated on whether or not to go for underwater welding, which I kindly backed down from for the following reasons.

                            -Harder to do beads underwater
-Further you go, more pressure on the tank
-Can possibly get the bends coming back up, depending on if they use helium in your tanks
-Tanks can explode and either maim or kill you.

Yes the work pays VERY WELL but the risk to me wasn't worth it. There are more braver souls who would put their life on the line to see an oil spill get's fixed then god bless their souls. Just like people who work in Mine Shafts.

As for electrician, it's good if you want to work with your hands all the time and are good with small parts. (Think LEGO sized). If you do well you can probably get a job with a cable company in the future running fiber optics for people which pays very well. Only risk I see is if your doing actual wiring in a house is small electrocution which can be migated easily with rubber. Now if you're doing outside electrical work (via telephone lines) that's where it's dangerous, the risk of falling if your working up high, bad weather conditions. I had a guy come install cable at my house and he told me the story of a lifetime.

He was working during the winter and had to fix a cable line that was running along the street line. The man was roughly 40-50 feet on a ladder that was secured and he also had a harness on for safety precautions. Kids who were messing around on a sled slammed into his ladder which threw him off, his harness broke since apparantly he hadn't fastened it right and he fell on solid ice covered concrete. He didn't have feeling in his right side and was hospitalized, he had pins put in his neck and arm and was sent home on workman's comp. The doctor told him he'd never be able to work again due to his injury, but he found a way around it and went into a clinic. A kind woman who was a specialist of some kind (forgot the name) told him the same thing about his injury that he might not be able to work again, but she was testing a new product that might restore feeling back into his body, cold laser surgery. He had to go into every Friday and for about an hour he had a laser ran down his body until he got feeling back. He told me that it was the most intense injury he's ever suffered working, but now he's back in full swing doing the same thing that almost killed him.

The way I see is Yyg, don't do anything that will put your life in danger. I care and I am pretty sure everyone else here cares as well for your safety.
