told my fiancée's mother we're engaged. Went downhill pretty quickly, from a fair discussion of financial stuff we simply don't agree with to her yelling at me that, essentially, it's her daughter and how dare I even consider any of their without her written consent, while my fiancée yelled at her for not letting me speak, and also how her mom spies on her and steals stuff from everyone in their house.

I've talked about the lobbyists being a problem, but there's also the matter of government subsidies for producers of corn and sugar at the heart of the problem. The solution really isn't laws telling people how much soda they can have per serving, its to stop empowering these companies to overrun the food industry with such products. You can control soda all you like but it doesn't mean much when tomato sauce or a packaged blueberry muffin have high fructose corn syrup in it. Have you ever tried to grocery shop for even the most basic items while omitting sugar and corn syrup? Its pretty eye-opening how pervasive HFCS is.

Just another case of government trying to fix problems it pretty much encouraged to start with.

Why do people blame the comapnies or governtemt for people making their own bad choices?
Laws / rules / legislation isn't the answer.
Tax people for being fat, I shouldnt pay the same price to fly as an obese person. I take up less space and less fuel to get me in the air.
Nobody mad the person shovel food into them as if they were a steam train. Why do people have to be penalised for other peoples stupidity. I drink sugary drinks, I eat chocolate yet my waist is 28"
Maybe my exercise is running around after these fatties, not everybody's can be "glandular"
Maybe my exercise is rolling the obese around a bed to smear cream on their sore infested ass.

Seriously if you have to reach ruther to wipe your ass than you need to reach the toilet paper you have a problem.

People still believe we live in an age of dowry and permission, Sure it's polite to ask and gives brown-nose points with the parents. But the girl is an individual and isn't somebody's property. If they don't like it screw them. She'll marry you if she wants to anyway unless she's a minor which I doubt.

I feel bad for you dude. You have my sympathy. It will be worse when you have kids, Nothing on earth interferes so much as a mother-in-law/grandmother.

People have different traditions around the world. And Feebs is living in another country so he has to respect their traditions as much as anyone going to the States has to respect yours.

Not that it's something written in stone, but multi-cultural marriages seem to be some of the most difficult or rich depending on the people involved. And the biggest mistake you can make is ignoring both families traditions unless you are willing to cut most ties with them, which is much easier in some cultures than it is in others. Feba has to consider how his wife-to-be will feel if she has to cut ties with her family over this (again, you need to understand how they handle marriage over there and their particular situation as a couple), and if she would be ok with it as time passes and the shine of marriage starts to dull.

My future brother-in-law asked my dad for permission to marry my sister three times and got a flat "no" every time. I think on the fourth he gave up and said "you two are going to do what you want no matter what I say." So now they're living together.

The point Satori was making is when those traditions treat people as the property of their family and not as you know people, then those traditions really aren't worth respecting at all.

Speaking out of my depth here, but Asian cultures have a stronger cultural emphasis on group identity vs individual agency than we do in Western cultures. For us the freedom to choose your own path trumps all, but their tendency also speaks to a basic human desire for belonging and being part of something greater that a lot of us Westerners have trouble finding.

So you could characterize Feba's fiancee's mother's reaction as being one of an over-controlling mother who is dehumanizing her daughter by denying her the sovereignty of an adult, or as being one of a caring traditional mother whose socially identity is highly tied with her family and is genuinely hurt by her daughter undermining that by acting out of turn. We really don't have enough context here to judge which is the case. I expect each situation is at least a little bit true, and there's a measure to which the mother's opinion needs to be respected and a measure to which it needs to be disregarded.
