I actually profit off my habit. like I said in a previous post. It only costs me around $35.00 to make 2 1/2 cartons for myself. After I sell a few for $3-4.00 a pack to some of my friends to save them a little money, I wind up paying off everything and making enough to buy myself coffee on the way to work.

Coffee... my other vise.

Not bad.

And that's not even the half of it. Smoking effects every single part of your body.

It also helped that my friend would buy them off me individually from time to time.

You are how old? I'm just asking since you seem to think that all of the medical data that shows how bad smoking is for you is a lie. Honestly you don't "see" or "perceive" smoking as dangerous which is sad. I can respect people who admit "I know its bad for me and I might die of cancer but I still want to do it" but for people who refuse to believe the truth its sad.

I asked your age because I had high school friends who had your exact same attitude when I told them I couldn't believe they wanted to end up with breathing problems like me later on when they started. One now is dead, the other has worse lungs than me. Also my mom has COPD from smoking for 20 years. My aunt died of lung cancer and my uncle of throat cancer all from smoking. That is the truth. Its not over-exageration in an effort to "demonize" smoking its the facts.

You are playing Russian Roulette with your health when you smoke and I fnd it annoying that there are people who refuse to believe it until they are dieing from cancer or can see its affects. If playing Russian Roulette is your thing and you like it I can't stop you but I will tell you that there is a great chance you'll die. The kid who played Russian Roulette and watched his friend blow his brains out is far more likely to warn people not to do it. That's not hypocritical its trying to save you their experience.

Yes there is no doubt that smoking is hazardous to your health. On the other hand, the way our society/government/etc has demonized it so absolutely is rather baffling. There is no open discussion about the positive side of smoking allowed. Every study, discussion or analysis of smoking is always hammered out as "smoking is the devil" Doesn't that strike you as odd? I think it's weird.

Certainly if you're burning through a pack or more every day then your lungs are going to make a hasty exit to stage left, but the one-sidedness of the issue smacks of people pushing an agenda, of propaganda. I find it hard to take everything at face value when the debate is so one-sided.

The same thing happens with drugs, alcohol and sex. They're all demonized without ever exploring the other side, no effort made to understand why people are drawn to them, just the institutionalized mantra of: "these are bad, if you partake that makes you bad too".

I'm 25

I never suggested in any of my posts that I was ignorant of the health hazards that I face. The fact of the matter is that I know its bad, I know its unhealthy and I know its unsafe. I also have a set plan to quit within the year. My wife and I are currently in the process of selling our house and moving into a new home in NH. Once we move in we're going to be planning on starting a family. At that time, we are both going to quit smoking, considering the risks it hold when trying to get pregnant and the complications that could arise. I am by no means an advocate of smoking and in no way/shape or form promote it to anyone else. You and dak seem to have blown this entire convorsation drastically out of proportion. My ORIGINAL peeve was with people like the 2 of you throwing statistics in my face and quoting things out of medical journals as though you yourselves are doctors. I and nearly every other smoker on the planet are aware of the risks involved in smoking cigarettes and participate wilingly in our additions. Again... no offence to the blind... but as people such as yourself constantly point out, the risks are written on the side of the box. For anyone who has been to Canada, they actually take it a step further and provide pictures of the afformentioned complications with your health including infected lungs and things of that nature.

New pet peeve: People who put words in other peoples mouths.

Perhaps you should take more time to fully read and pay attention to a person's posts before attempting to have a field day manipulating their words.

First of all, every time I look at my wife all I'm reminded of is why I married her in the first place. Second, I don't recall you saying in any of your posts that you had ever been a smoker... so tell me... how do you know what it's like to quit? It's not personal experience... so... EMPATHY maybe?

Some people are able to smoke for 50+ years and drop it just *snaps his fingers* like that. Others struggle with the fight to quit and it winds up taking them years to finally stop. Please disconnect the cameras you have hidden around my house and stop monetering my every move. It will not... I repeat... WILL NOT make you learn a single thing about my personal life or my struggle with smoking.

I'm not putting words into your mouth. Its just you get very defensive that someone would "dare" post medical data. Honestly Chibi is behaving more maturely than you and Dak. You're remarks made fun of Grandmom when she said she used to smoke. You make fun of the people and downgrade those of us that dare to talk about our own experiences. That's the attitude that led me to believe you are truly unaware of the risk you're taking. If that wasn't true I apologize.

Also I haven't quoted any medical data. I only told you about people who I've known that have died and I'm sorry if that offends you.

If you do a websearch you'll actually find there's a lot of data on the benefis vs bad effects of occasional smoking. The only "benefit" that they have found though, study wise, is that it relaxes you momentarily by releasing certain chemicals in the brain. With tons of sensors on they didn't find anything else benefiting the body system.

Also it wasn't the surgeon general that originally found the cancer and smoking connection. It was the tabacco industry themselves that ran tests looking to find benefits who instead found a lot of bad side effects. They were so alarmed they hid it for years. Do you consider their studies biased and an effort to "demonize"?

I guess the thing I'm having an issue with is the use of the word "demonize". I don't consider publishing factual studies so that you have the data available an effort by society to "demonize" but rather inform. I don't think any of the sata has done anything to stop people honestly I see more smokers around now than I did 20 years ago.

It happens to everybody. Nobody magically quits. Withdrawal will probably push your marriage to the limits, and your multiplayer struggle with kicking the actual addiction wont help.
