My current project at work. They want me to implement some new functionality for this software(Visual Fusion) that goes on top of Sharepoint. That's fine, I like coding things.

What I don't like, is working with things I don't know jack shit about.

I do not know enough about Sharepoint's internal structure to pull this off. Hell I barely have any real experience with the Sharepoint front end, let alone figuring out the backend.
I don't know XAML.
I don't know ASP.NET
I don't know XML
I kind of know C#
I certainly don't know enough about how they all fit together.
I don't know where to even start with this damn thing.

Seriously, it's been about a week and I'm still struggling to get the damn development environment set up. God only knows how I'm gonna get a basic Hello World example done if I can't even set this thing up.
Oh, they also decided it was a good idea to put the whole damn thing on a 64-bit machine. You know, just stuff a whole bunch of software that sometimes goes looking for 32-bit dll files on a 64 bit machine and not have a 32 bit installation nearby so I can't even really attempt to patch the thing together.
It's a huge clusterfuck and I really think it's reaching the point where I need to tell my boss that this thing is not happening.

i really dont like it when someone tells me... "i'll call you in a bit", then leave me stranded waiting for that call and never actually getting it.

my brain functions in a way that if im waiting for someone to call me "in a bit", it wont be able to focus on whatever it needs to because its waiting for that call, for example if im doing some programming i need to focus on what im doing but since im waiting for the call i cant seem to be able to get anything done until that call.

just say you'll call in 30 min or something.

tl;dr version: dont try to hide the fact that you dont want and will not call me by saying it will be "in a bit".

Taxes. Especially in the United States (more because I'm not familiar with other countries).

I mean, seriously? The simplest form there is to file, the 1040-EZ is literally a single page, half sheet. There's... 17 lines on it, not counting name/address/etc (going from memory). The instructions to fill out this form? 54 pages. I'm not kidding. The instructions for the FULL tax form (which is just under 2 pages, not counting any additional forms you may need) is well over 300 pages long. And of course, it CAN'T be the same as last year, they have to add more complex stuff.

I'm one of many students at my school helping my local community by preparing these forms for free, for low-income taxpayers. Legally, I can't accept payment for them. But after today, I understand why HR Block charges so much. I wasn't even working on preparing returns and I STILL want to tear out my hair. One at a time. Slowly. Then grab a potentially lethal weapon and do a certain action that I can't even talk about without being arrested. Multiple times.

How long till April 15 again?

Taxes.

The problem isn't taxes. The problem is US tax code. Believe it or not, taxes are actually just a contribution to the government in some countries, not bureaucratic nightmares. That's what most people want out of tax reform-- not raising or lowering, but making it not a pain in the ass.

Try corporate taxes. I went to school for accounting and took that route. Aftewards I wondered wth I had been smoking and went back to learn something else. LOLOLOLOLOL

I've been over corporate taxes, personal taxes, all sorts of taxes. Not in detail for corporations, but enough to be annoyed by them. However, with the changes for 2009, personal is getting more annoying (not to be confused with more difficult).

And believe it or not, Feba is more accurate about it. I was actually suggesting something along tax reform with some of the guys I'm doing this with last night. Honestly, I would rather see a national sales tax (on non-food/grocery items) -- then nobody would have to file but the companies, who can send it along with their normal quarterly (or semi-annual) taxes. No withholdings from paychecks, no pulling the hair out. The only problem is you would loose 75% of public accountants because that's all they do all year long.

If you want to get the majority of the population to fuck over accountants, this is a pretty damn good year for it.

I like the idea of a national sales tax, but it would be very hard to balance without leading to situations where people needed to file returns anyway. For example, let's take two people. One of them is a widely respected executive in a large corporation. He goes to a store, buys a suit, and let's say he pays a tax of $50. The other is recently released from prison, and looking for a job. In order to look good for interviews, he goes into a store, and buys a suit. Chances are that extra $50 hits him a lot harder than the executive, even though for him it's a necessity, not just another addition to his wardrobe. Same with a car-- even if we have lower taxes on used cars, the executive might be buying a classic, or a hobby car; while our newly free man might need one just to get between affordable housing and his job, given how terrible city design and public transportation is in the US.

I also suspect that a lot of tax income would be lost on the top %1 of society through things like auctions-- Buying some piece of art or so through a means that doesn't involve taxes. Even unintentionally, that's money that would've come out of their income as things are. And then richer people are more likely to spend time outside of the country; every time they buy something outside US soil, that's lost revenue. Even if you charge customs taxes on damn near everything that crosses the border, that's still losing anything they consume overseas.

It's very hard to keep sales taxes from becoming regressive, especially when they're the only sort of tax around.

I like what I've seen of the way Japan handles it. If you only have one job, and make less than 100k or so, your taxes are automatically deducted by your employer, and you don't even need to file. If your situation is more complicated, you do need to file. That seems perfectly reasonable, and then it's just a matter of how complicated filing is for those who do need to.

We sittin in here, I'm supposed to be a tax payer and we in here talkin bout taxes. (Parody of Allen Iverson "Talkin Bout Practice" if you didn't get it)

I got mine done already, planning on e-filing them tonight. Luckily I just have a W-2 so I can do my Federal for "Free" online, the only thing I have to pay for is my state taxes. My only regret is that the program doesn't allow you to do city taxes with it so I have to do those on my own.

So KingofZeal I have to ask, since you do taxes for a living, do your relatives ask you to do their taxes? lol I f**king HATE tax season. I screen all my calls for 4 months. My answering machine miraculously "doesn't work right". To top it off, any of my relatives that do wrangle me into doing their taxes, don't bother to even offer any payment or give me any type of token of thanks. Oh wait, I take that back, my auntie gave me a couple of B1G1F coupons for Pizza Hut last year....

I don't do taxes for a living, in fact I'm in school majoring in Accounting. As part of my education, I'm doing an internship for a program called VITA - Volunteer Income Tax Assistance... you may have heard of it. Basically, we do income taxes for low-income individuals (and families), who made less than $59k in 2009. Last year we did 770 returns from mid-January to April 15, about 3 months, and recovered over a million in refunds, giving Sheboygan an estimated economic impact of about $14 mil. This year we're expecting to do over 1000 returns, and my professor needs a lot of experienced help to keep things from getting out of hand. I'm mostly dealing with the technical side of things (keeping the computers running) -- I'm trying to stay away from the clients as much as possible this year, but I've already done 3-4 returns and a couple interviews.

However, I have already been asked one question regarding taxes from someone I know (in California), and I've had to do a research project or two for some people here on campus. I've run into some very interesting situations even this soon into the season, but my college has been doing VITA for so long, many of the clients are starting to become indignant about our FREE service (which would normally cost them over $100), so it's not making for a quite so fun environment this year...
