I'm trying to copy some shit from one of my hard drive partitions to another. Halfway through it invariably complains about not having enough space, yet I have 115 GB of free space in the destination, and I'm only trying to move 4.4 GB. What the fuck.

Did my semi-annual PS2 repair/cleaning today. Its pitiful people even had to get certified to do this for money years ago.

It was just designed to have the lens fall out of alignment. I was going to just trade it in for a slim model, but they pulled the "it doesn't read discs, even though they didn't give it a change to boot anything and shouldn't have been surprised I wouldn't read the CDs, but would boot the DVD game.

Then again, if it did boot, he'd only give me 18 for it and nothing for the HDD. Not worth paying $50 -$60 for a slim from that when I can just spend $7 on a can of compressed air and fix it myself.

I'm gonna have to find something fun to do with the PS2 HDD. Not that I'm big into doing piracy-like things, but if this thing is just gonna keep crapping out of me (and it was designed to do just that), I'm gonna get an HD Loader and just put my games on the HDD so I don't have to fuss with it not reading discs.

Of course of PS3 still had BC, then I wouldn't even be doing any of this, now would I?

Days when you get so much snow that you can't see the lanes in the street. Because we all know that when people can't see the lanes, they drive even more stupidly than they already do. I saw quite a few people fishtailing this morning lol.

personally given the choice, if its a state or two away.. ill drive.. (went to missouri over thanksgiving its bout 2ish away from me) but say goin to new york, vegas, la.. id rather fly and be there in couple hours.. regardless if there was some high speed train option..

which all the discussion got me researching.. sooo here goes.. from basically my house to LA.. 2075 miles..

driving via mapquest directions.. 30 hours and some change..

riding a bullet train ( supposedly japans fastest NOZOMI 186mph if we had something like this) 11 hours 15 ish minutes

(assuming straight shot, no stops, no slowing down or stops in cities it travels through and assuming it can maintain a consistent 186mph for 11 straight hours.. cars can read 120 mph but doesnt mean it can hold 120mph for 11 hours)..

plane from airport nearest me (adding in travel time to drive to airport) 7 hours.

that reasoning alone would have lawmakers here in the states saying "why bother". why spend billions (yes, in todays economy, billions) to outfit the entire country with new rail systems to exclusively handle these types of trains along with the reconstructing of any existing road to go over or under so no wrecks can be caused to add in an option for getting there a lil faster than a car or greyhound.. but still not as fast as a plane..

americas got to have it now mentality aint gonna fit with a bullet train.. yeah in the beginning they would be a novelty some would try it out use it a time or two.. then the bullet train would be in the same place amtrak is now.. losing money and getting gov bailouts to stay afloat..

Also, on technology, the point is that we're the goddamn U. S. of A., and we shouldn't have any problem with making something go really fucking fast in a mostly straight line. Keep in mind that Japan is not the only country working on high-speed rail; the Shinkansen is the most famous, but by no means the only system out there. I have heard of trains tested as reaching up into the 250-300+ MPH range. Keep in mind there are a number of other advantages to trains: They can be loaded with many more people far quicker (thanks to each car having its own entry way), they can be made to run very efficiently and off cleaner fuels (a high speed rail line could be powered solely by renewable/nuclear energy sources; unlikely a jumbo jet can be battery powered anytime soon), and what will probably wind up being most important to Americans if you seriously believe your philosophy: Trains demand far lower delays. Where airports have a long history of getting backed up, a train system can be run far more smoothly and predictably. There's also the fact that high-speed rail technology in America doesn't have to mean "Buy it from the damn French-Chinese"; there's plenty of room to work out our own solutions. Maglev trains have gone in excess of 360 MPH; there's been some looking into using basically giant vacuum tubes to help move trains incredibly quickly (by reducing friction to the absolute minimum), to the point of rivaling Concord; and again, it's the goddamn U. S. of A. We can put a bigger engine on it.

sorry bout the Nozomi thing just did a search on bullet trains and it was first one to pop up with statement on being the fastest.

and yes i have seen the documentaries on some bullet trains and the technology they are tryin out or tryin to get the kinks worked out of.. most recent one being the magnet type one that uses magnets to pull/push them along..

i can see, city to city, being viable.. la to san fran, houston to dallas, indy to chicago, but, any type of cross country even at greater speeds would still be hard pressed to see any real benefit.

and with the way systems are run in america trains would not be left untouched sorry but i dont believe that.

any kind of mass transit is or would be a target of any moron that feels the need to cause trouble / gain attention.. trains would suffer the same fate.. as soon or if a system were put in place and the first moron comes and causes a derailment of any type.. then would come the inevitable security changes and policy changes where you would be standing in line 2-3 hours gettin checked before being allowed to step onto the train.

yes they could transport more people than a plane with lower emissions, but you also have to look at another thing, if you have listened to any news lately one of the biggest complaints airlines have is lack of people traveling, cutting down on amount of planes in the sky to get them more full.

if they cant fill a 100-200 seat aircraft to capacity how would anyone think trains would be full or near full?

it still seems to me the cost would not warrant the benefits..

also you mentioned we wouldnt have to go overseas to make / build this.. true.. but anything made in the us would be more expensive than anything shipped in from overseas.. keep it here in country and double the costs if not triple it.. or pull it in from overseas payin less than half our costs to make it ourselves..

we have done it to ourselves.. no one can say we havent.. ive seen it play out in factories in my own area with car companies shutting factories down because of unions they cant compete.. even before this economic meltdown weve been in the last year or two gm and ford were closing factories here in our area because of costs..

unions were demanding higher wages higher benefits.. hitting up to near 25$+ an hour wages causing factories to lose money and thus shutting down or going dormant.. while overseas companies were coming into our area (honda, sazuki, and a few others) refusing to allow unions in and capping pay at 10 to 15 an hour.

any company is going to go where ever they can get the lowest cost.. so if they can get a metal rail made in a country where the guy making it is paid 5 bucks a day or here in the states where the guy getting paid 15 bucks an hour where do you think its going to come from?

thats why i say we have done it to ourselves.. we shot our own self in the foot..

and its not just manufacturing.. look at health care.. i have had several friends that have gone overseas to have surgeries done because it costs a fraction of a % of what it does having the same thing done here.. including the trip costs..

i had diverticulitis had to go in for surgery.. 5 day hospital stay cost around 83,000.00 and some change.. luckily i was insured at the time but with deductibles and co pays cost me out of pocket around 9 grand. a friend of mine had the same thing.. went to his wifes country.. including trip costs it cost him a total of 3700.00, i believe and i could be a little off his total hospital bill run 2200 a far cry from the 83k mine costs.

now please dont get me wrong.. i am an american, i love america, i wouldnt want to live anywhere else.. but we have utterly and completely shot ourselves in the foot when it comes to things like this.

I mean a little slip once in a while is understandable but nowadays I hear "f this" and "f that" and "that guy is a m-fer". It just amazes me that some parents couldn't even bring their children up to show some respect for elders and watch what they say in front of family, at the very least. My daughter is almost 30 and she knows I disapprove of her swearing around me so she does it on purpose. She's extremely immature but if she sees my temper flare (which doesn't happen often) she knows its time to quit. My son on the other hand has told his friends straight out that he will not swear in front of his family/parents because its disrespectful. Thank god.

- I hate it when people cannot be bothered to put capital letters in their (long!) messages. Please tell me, Caramis, that you have a legitimate keyboard deficiency where your Shift button does not work.

- Preemptive. When people call you a grammar Nazi, or act like you a stick up your ass if you wish people would just make their messages a little more readable...Here's what I remember: Only you have to type it, but you want everybody else to read it.

- Deliveries I'm expecting that take more than 2 weeks for me to receive them. I'm still waiting for a package from Hong Kong for 2 weeks. It took mail from Singapore only 5 days to reach me.

My brother swears to our mother. It's a trait of his he developed ever since going to college and one that I wish he wouldn't do. I think it's because our mother is very permissive with him. He wouldn't dare swear to our aunt, who she would make feel like an ant. I just don't swear around my family. Filial son shit, etc. Oops...

I pretty much separate obscenity into three levels. Kid stuff, Preteen stuff, and the rest of it. The first level I use freely, the second I typically only avoid around small children and speaking directly to people in authority, the third I pretty much wait and see if other people use it first. As far as using it around family, the only family I bother being around anymore is my mother. I'll regularly use preteen stuff (hell, damn, shit, piss, etc.), and pretty much never the rest of it. That's less out of respect or being proper than it just feeling awkward to use around here-- I remember her using the f-word maybe three or four times.

I remember my sister once swore at my mother when I was a kid. I also remember her getting her teeth brushed with soap. It was so effective, even I learned her lesson.

That could very well be the cause -- everybody wants to coddle the kids, so they don't understand right and wrong.

That I can remember I've never cursed in front of my mom or dad, and I don't do it around my nieces or nephews. I do it lightly around friends or not at all. I usually do all of my cursing in private while playing XBL with my mic turned off.

Being hurled head-first into a project without sufficient training and the sneaking suspicion that my boss might not realize it. It's gonna be a rough couple of weeks ahead.
