  • Re: What's your pet peeve in RL?

This (to me) obscure follow-up call and cover letter business are just two details about the job-hunting process which I was completely unaware of.

What really ticks me off is not knowing how much else I don't know about it.

It's times like this where I seriously wish that I was omniscient . . .

You're going to have to go out and buy a Furry Tux. Pix or it didn't happen.

Turns out, there are several aspects to it that I'm supposed to know, that I've had no Earthly way of knowing.

I think I ranted about something like that tens of pages ago?
Could be worse, you could be stuck living off rapidly shrinking savings, in an area where there's literally zero jobs for graduates and the only jobs available are horrible temporary minimum wage call centre or warehouse packing jobs that literally hundreds of other people are also applying for.

Seriously, the only thing worse than unemployment gaps are degrees when job hunting. Most employers will just assume you'll leave the job the second a job for a graduate opens up so they won't even look at your app once they see the degree.

So it's put myself into even more debt by moving to an area where I maybe, just maybe be considered for a job or stay at home and watch what little savings I have slowly shrink while applying for horrible jobs that literally hundreds of others are applying for.

Seriously I was interviewed for a temp job as a bank cashier, I asked how many other applicants there were and the employers said "We've spoken to at least 500 in the last four days"

You can leave out the degree information. There are certain things that you leave out of an application.

If you apply for a Fast food place, you leave the degree out of the application. That's actually how I found my job at the gas station, left out a few things in the application.

So, yeah, back to the job-hunting thing. Wat do?

Attach a resume and cover letter in addition to my application, then call back 1-2 weeks later? Is there anything else that I'm missing or forgetting? I would really like to know.

Also, what about for businesses where I can only apply on their websites?

Usually they have an option to attach a file to the application. Put in your resume and cover letter in there as well if they have that option. If not, then I don't know.

You could try going to your states local job hunting place. I mean, there are places like that. Like the CT works here.

Going direct to a website is good as they can keep your details on record. A lot of places just dive through those records when next recruiting.

Simply going to different places and dropping off your resume to have on record is helpful.

However do remember that there could be literally hundreds or even thousands doing the same thing depending on where you live. Yesterday I was interviewed for a crappy part time bank clerk job and asked how many other applications they have had. They said that they had spoken to over 500 people this week alone.

Tried it. You then have to explain why you went to university and "failed" or where the big ol' unemployment gap in your resume came from.

Then there's also the dreaded series of temp jobs which to an employer glancing over your application, just looks like you were bouncing from job to job.

That's because you are still in student mode.

I'm guessing either you've never looked for a job before that had something to do with your chosen career, or you've only worked with family and/or in places that have revolving door-schemes like restaurants and department stores.

Once you change your mindset to "working professional" mode you'll see what I'm talking about.

                          But telling you my opinion and experiences "in the real" would be a very long rant (no, seriously, very very long), which I doubt anyone would be interested in reading. <_<;

To be fair, I also used to think that the follow-up call came off as obnoxious until I found out it's standard procedure.

I tend to like them really since it's...Somewhat nice to see that your own job isn't the only crappy one.

I worked as a chef to get myself through college and in the two years I worked at the restaurant I worked at, I noticed that there were a number of people you will usually run into in a kitchen:

                              • The high school student who is only there for 2 hours a day on weekends and manages to mess up an 8 person order at the last minute before finishing.
                              • The college student who follows up from the high schooler and has to spend the first hour of her shift cleaning up the mess the high schooler left behind while the serving staff bitch loudly at the manager.
                              • The 20-something friend to all people who treats the ten-a-penny serving staff like humans and not food delivery tools. As a result the serving staff become more obnoxious about their precious tips even though the kitchen staff are usually on the same wages as them and don't get anything i nthe way of tips.
                              • The socially awkward male college student who does everything without saying a thing unless spoken to. Nobody ever notices his presence until they walk into him and cause him to ruin someone's meal.
                              • That one idiot who just listens to his MP3 player the entire day and doesn't hear any orders or fire alarms.
                              • The 6ft 7in Polish guy who smells of cigarette smoke and violence who loves cooking, helping others and cute bunnies. He speaks in a thick Polish accent and never calls in favours that people owe him. He turns up at 6am and never leaves until 12am and is the kind of guy who when you do the evening shift and you suddenly get a flat tire, his car pulls up in front of yours and he offers you a spare that fits perfectly, he just waves his hand and says "You do not have to thank me." in his thick accent.. You are convinced that one day he’s going to ask you to hide a body, execute a cop or worse… cover his shift...
                              • The huge Malian guy with dreadlocks and burns all the way up his forearms who takes up half of the kitchen and is visibly sweating all the time. Usually joins the socially awkward male college student in saying nothing for the entire day. He never speaks any English but cooks everything to perfection.
                              • A cute college girl who seems to always hang around that socially awkward guy to try and get him to speak and tends to discover that the Malian guy can't speak any English. Also seems to be the only one who can get the Polish guy to laugh at something not fatalistic. Pretty much always ends up sleeping with one of them.
                              • The college guy who ends up in hospital when he finds the cooking alcohol
                              • The high schooler who ends up in hospital when she finds the cooking alcohol
                              • The mother of four who always turns up very hung over
                              • The High schooler who always turns up messily drunk and has to be sent home.
                              • The Irish Traveller who is there for two months until the police bulldoze the local traveller camp.
                              • The graduate student who used to work there and then came back because there's no other job openings and this place would hire him again.
                              • The high school finisher who wants to start her own restaurant and has her dreams crushed when she realises what working as a chef is ACTUALLY like. she then joins the serving staff because you make far more money doing that and acting like you're working than actually working.
                              • The former Royal Marine (but he's just unhinged enough for you to suspect that he's really ex-SBS) who wanted a relaxing job and doesn't know what everyone is complaining about when the climate control breaks down in the middle of August.
                              • The waitress who took a job in the kitchen because she was whining about having to serve a full restaurant which means *GASP*, taking an order from every third or fourth table as the others have probably been seen to by the other serving staff. She will realise why having to cook 4-8 meals for every table is far, far more demanding than having to deal with the one or two abusive customers per week, or actually TAKING orders when the customers are seated rather than claiming to say "I'll take your order when you're ready" then spending an hour talking to the other serving staff, then wondering why the customers are pissed off.

I'd list the people you usually see when working Tech Support/Customer Service but nine times out of ten it's usually a recently graduated student who had their dreams crushed when they realised they won't get a job with their degree in English Literature or Mass Media.
