Peeve: people who still refuse to call Final Fantasy VI that.

Perhaps they could get away with it, back when Final Fantasy VI wasn't repeatedly re-released in North America under that title and the real Final Fantasy III didn't exist here at all. But now that neither of those conditions are fulfilled, they've gone beyond simply "being silly" now.

It's like, they think they're being pedantic, when in reality they're being obnoxious and willfully ignorant of Final Fantasy III's existence. It's that bad. /fume

You think that's bad? I have a friend that consistently uses the word "coins" in Sonic games. Also, when I was a little kid, other little kids had problem pronouncing "Donkey Kong" for some goddamned reason. Half the people I knew said "Donkinkong" which just sounds awful and reminds me of Don King more than the game.

Answering dumb questions like that is your job, though. Sure, ideally all of your customers would be self-aware people who don't need any help, but if that were the case, then you wouldn't be needed. So...

Working any sort of customer service job sucks. You can safely break down every single person you deal with into four categories.

1) People who are too stupid, badly informed or just plain new to even use basic checks for their problems. You know, this is the kind of person who will call tech support for a computer problem when a reboot will probably fix it. Thankfully these tend to be the nicest ones to talk to since the vast majority are genuinely people who are badly informed.

2) People who are so obnoxious they treat you like an ape because you're asking them if they have done basic checks for their problem. Then they do the basic checks and realise that it was something easily fixable by themselves. These are the worst because they are the "I know everything about [insert device/activity here] even though I'm calling up customer service to help me with a basic problem!"

3) Someone (Almost always Scottish but I did once have to deal with an angry Canadian who spoke so quickly his voice became a muffled fuzz) with a completely incomprehensible accent that gets more and more irratic as you try not to shout "For the love of my blood pressure could you please speak clearly?"

4) The odd moron who thinks that he's talking to someone in India and starts yelling racial slurs down the phone even though I'm clearly not speaking in anything remotely like an Indian accent. This never actually gets anywhere as it tends to be five minutes of someone demanding to speak to someone who is English (Even if they're Scottish, Irish or Welsh for whatever reason) while I try to convince them that I am.

If you are ever offered a customer service position: run the hell away.

Heheh, in spanish (at least here in MX) it would be closer in meaning to Mr. King Kong.

And many people here actually thought all those games were about King Kong rather than some new character. So Donkey got lost in translation. <_<

It will but once you factor in the amount of alcohol you will be downing after working a day in customer service/techsupport/whatever they're calling it this year, probably not.

I love helping people and every now and then you get that one caller that you get that warm and fuzzy feeling about when you realised you helped make their day.

Then next call you get the wanker who thinks they can treat you like shit because they are talking to you from several hundred miles away and the urge to pickle your liver because you can't punch him/her in the face over the phone overrides all of that.

Ok, I may have mentioned this before, but I have decided that this pet peeve is seriously the one thing in the world I hate more than anything else. I hate it when somebody makes a baldfaced assertion with little to no evidence, and in order to debunk that claim you have to go to a hundred times more work than was required to make it in the first place. This applies equally to inconsequential things here like whether red mages should or should not melee all the way up to big things like the state of the economy. Westboro's hateful speech, Camping's looney predictions, fucking everything Fox News reports--all this crap is cheap and easy to puke out by the tubful, and tons of it sticks, changes people's minds and causes them to act in ways that are destructive to themselves and others. But if you actually care about the truth about whether a naked thf can outparse a well-geared rdm, whether furries really do have delusional beliefs in greater proportion than others, whether a pro Starcraft player has ever been defeated by a straight worker rush, you have to spend time and effort testing and researching the hypotheses. For stupid internet disputes the investment practically never worth it, even if you assume the best possible conclusion of you being 100% right and squarely convincing your opponent, which never happens anyway, so the best move you can make is to throw up your hands and concede the moment it becomes clear you'll have to do any work at all. It's a lose-lose situation. For real life problems that really do matter enough to put in the exertion, by the time you've accumulated enough evidence to support a counter-argument either 1) the discussion has already moved on and nobody cares about what you have to say, 2) the opposing idea has become so widespread and entrenched that cognitive biases demand a staggering amount of evidence to change people's minds rather than just a reasonable amount, even though the initial claim was made on no evidence whatsoever, and/or 3) in the time you've taken to defeat one ignorant-ass claim, dozens of others have already been made. It just makes me want to say fuck the world on every possible level.
