Knowing her, some derogatory comment about moderates was the last thing someone said to her before an interview, and she mindlessly repeated it to the camera.
If you wanted to know why any sane, rational person would go after moderates, that would be a different question. The answer would have to do with median voter theory. At the moment the only voters she needs to worry about are people who are likely to vote in the republican primary, the most vocal, energized segment of which are stereotypically extremists. When it came to the general election, you'd expect such a candidate to abandon their harsher rhetoric and adopt a stance that appealed more to political moderates. You might think this two-faced strategy wouldn't work in a world where you could easily dig up a youtube clip at any given moment of a candidate saying something completely repugnant a couple months ago, and I'd wish you were right, but America's public consciousness has the attention span of a three year old and the memory of a goldfish.
