The important thing about expensive jeans for me is that the fade is unique based on your wear pattern. It's great. And they last a long ass time, so the fade just keeps getting better and better.
Burning questions are burning: Is jenova_9 really a girl and is she cute? Does she talk like that in real life?

I guess this is one way to tell whether the girl has junk in the trunk or a bony ass.

I could show you the difference if we were like, in person, and I had an example in front of me. I used to do it all the time when training people at Banana Republic (which is pretty low-end in the big scheme of things). I would take a shirt and jeans and khakis from our store and some from other retailers and turn them inside out to show how they were stitched, what materials were used, and show the difference in fit in the same sizes. HUGE difference.

I was shopping for a new coat the other day. Looked at a leather jacket at the Gap, Banana Republic, Macy's and Saks Fifth Avenue. The difference in quality and construction was incredibly noticeable. I just didn't have $700 to drop on the one at Saks, even though it felt incredibly light and smooth and soft, and fit me like a GD glove.

THAT SAID, there is no reason why you have to pay retail for high-end clothing like that. Outlets, the internet, and consignment shops are great ways to get amazing deals on clothing that you couldn't otherwise afford. I almost never pay full price.
... I've had all my jeans that I spent almost no money on for almost 5 years now. I still got my shirts from over 5 years ago, and they still fit just fine, and are still fitting perfectly. Hell, they where all bought at wall mart. As long as you take care of them, theres no need to spend more than 40$ on a pair of clothing as long as you take care of them.

Being a T-Shirt/flannel/pullover-sweater and Jeans/Khakis sort of person and generally not giving a flying flip about fashion in general, I can even make that work for a long time. Its just the Khakis have to go if I'm working a job that's a bit more physical because its not a matter of if they'll split or tear, just when

And I find its usually the act of getting into the car is when that happens. you just can never anticipate it and its kinda hard to change how you get into the driver's seat.

I just hate getting dressy in general. I can see why women can have fun with it, you get diverse options, but men dressing up is putting on a suit and looking like a stiff. Even as I take this job at Gamestop my skin crawls at the thought of having to buy lame-ass polo shirts to fit the company standard if I make it to the spring. I am whoring out my entire inventory of pullover sweaters all through the fall and winter until then.

My sister is getting married New Year's Day and I'm gonna have to go rent a monkey suit because I know I'm going to be tagged as one of the groomsmen for no other good reason than her fiance will probably pick me.

I don't like dressing up for weddings. I mean, unless its my wedding I don't think anyone's going to be that frustrated because, you know, someone is getting married.

I don't like dressing up for funerals. The person is dead, he's not going to care.

I don't like dressing up for church. Fashion is a human value. I don't care if you believe in God or not, but just for the sake of argument, let's say there is one. Why would God care about how you dress of all the things to care about you doing?

The dog does not care what I look like when it needs to go for a walk. She will get excited if I make it to the front door half-naked.

Again, I see why women might care about all this. You get fun options. You get variety. This is why you have a dozen pair of shoes and I only have two at most at any given time, if that. For me to get excited about buying clothes I'd have to be born without a penis.

Strangely enough, this doesn't seem to keep me from creating online RPG characters with an amazing fashion sense that maintains functionality.

When it comes to jeans ------> Levi's. That's all.

Also, I wont wear jeans unless they have gold stitching. Any other color just looks lame.

I really hate any sort of skinny jeans because:

                  1) I like being able to use my pockets. With tight jeans you tend to have to take them off in order to be able to take anything out of the pockets.

                  2) I like to wear boots and unless you are a cyclist, having to tuck your jeans into your boots to get them on just looks freakish.

                  3) If they tear they don't just have a tiny rip. No you always get the MASSIVE tear that goes all the way up your inside leg or up your rear making it look like you ate one too many sweets.

                  4) They're just plain hot and uncomfortable compared to baggy jeans.

                  5) I can't put my glasses into the pocket and move without breaking them.

                    My pet peeve; Lucid dreaming.

60% of the dreams that aren't blank, I can mostly control - but my god! One thing has always bothered me about it...

Why is it so hard to conjure energy blasts?!

I was dreaming I was in some haunted mansion... thing and these demonic heads were attacking me so I busted out with the Matrix moves and went gun-fu on their asses. As I'm nearing the door, I do the whole "Kamehameha" pose thing to blast the remaining swarm with - in my mind - fire but nothing ever comes out!

Every single time! I can do all lucid dreaming things like flying, but never that one specific thing! Whyyyy!

I never said your cheap wal-mart couture couldn't last a while, but I guarantee you it looks like crap in comparison to something you'd buy elsewhere.

You can keep asserting that there's no reason to spend more than $40 on "a pair of clothing" but that doesn't make you correct.

If you're comfortable in your fashions, then that's what is really important, but I have never seen a single garment at Wal-Mart (not even underwear or undershirts) that I'd consider wearing.

edit: And men dressing up, or dressing nicely is a lot more than "suit that makes you look stiff." In fact, if you look stiff in a suit, it is either because 1.) Your suit doesn't fit correctly, and/or is cheaply made, or 2.) You don't know how to wear a suit.

Huge difference between a suit bought at the Men's Wearhouse vs. one bought at a Dept Store, or at Brook's Brothers, or one that is actually made for you from scratch. Tailoring, folks. There's a reason it exists.

Sure, men are limited to pants, shorts, shirts, jackets, suits, but the variety in that short list? Astounding.

This Penny Arcade thread is hardly comprehensive, but it's a good indication of what I'm referring to.

Apparently my new pet peeve is people who don't care/know about fashion saying that it doesn't matter just because they don't care about it. Does not compute.

Oh, sartorial eltism. I thought I had to scour the internets just to find you, but here you are.

Just kidding, I'm a believer that when you look good you feel good, and fashion is definitely subjective. I can't justify spending $100 on a pair of jeans, no matter how well they're made. Levi's jeans come in a multitude of style and are well-enough made that my current pairs are on their fifth year of use.

What I wouldn't mind dropping some major money on is a tailored suit. I'm 6'6'' and all kinds of lengthy so even clothes specifically made for tall people occasionally don't fit me. Any tips on finding a decent tailor?

Your best bet is to go into a higher end suit store (Brooks Brothers, or a department store) and asking them who they'd suggest.

Also, I just read above that BBQ does not dress up for weddings or funerals. Classy. "The dead guy won't care." Um, the funeral isn't FOR the dead guy. It is for his friends and family. And you dress up out of respect for them. But hey, just show up in your baggy khakis or "good jeans" sneakers and your tee-shirt. It's not like there are, you know, reasons for these things. It's all just arbitrary!

Dak - I wouldn't go so far as to call it elitism. At least on my part. Sure I care about it, but I don't expect everyone else to. What bugs me is when people who don't care, or just don't get it, are like "olol it doesn't matter, my cheap clothing is the same as your expensive stuff." When it's not really true, and it's not really necessary to say that. It's not like I go around saying "olol you like anime/video games/etc. Learn to classic literature." It's silly. Sure, I may not care as much as you do about it, but that doesn't mean that having an interest in it is a bad thing.

edit: Maybe an example that would translate better to people here would be me saying that my game is as good or better than your game. Or that my operating system is as good or better as yours. When these things are subjective to a certain extent, but also completely measurable in others.

Also, nothing wrong with Levi's. The company hasn't lasted this long by making a shitty product.

Saying cheap clothing is the same as quality (and usually more expensive) clothing is just an excuse for people to be cheap about it.

I may not care for trends and brands, but from a practical point of view even if I only had 1 set of clothes/shoes they would need to be of a good enough quality to be useful. Otherwise you'd actually end up spending more money replacing said cheap clothes so often.

(Edit > Not to mention the chore of going to the store to actually buy the clothes. I very much dislike the experience unless I'm with a cute girl who is running around like a kid in a candy store. ^^ )

In my case I simply buy what I like regardless of brands, but then again dressing up has never ever had an effect on how secure I feel about myself.

The one thing that would probably have an effect on how I feel would be not being able to take a shower, but that would be more because of how uncomfortable I'd feel due to the dirtyness rather than what other people would think about me.

I used to be in the "cheap clothes are just as good as the expensive kind" segment. I truly believed what I said and fought tooth and nail to defend it. Then I got a bit more disposable income and a job that required better style and found out that in some cases I was dead wrong. The feel and quality of some expensive clothes just can't be duplicated. To me its like making those slice and bake cookies that come in a tube in the store and comparing them to some homemade from scratch cookies...you can tell the difference every time.

Now that doesn't mean I wear couture, I am a jeans and t-shirt gal. But I do know when to throw in the towel and say I'm wrong. I do have some designer jeans and they didn't cost me an arm and a leg. I got them straight from the designer in New York too and I paid $30 for them. They were out of season and not blue and I had a coupon. lol I actually did this last Christmas and gave my godson a designer outfit from there too (his favorite designer) and I only paid $50 for a sweet shirt and jeans for him. Every piece of an outfit doesn't have to be designer either. So you have on your Levi's and plain shirt but the jacket can be designer and really spiff up the outfit. And you don't wear your designer shit for every damn thing either, if you go out to the corner bar for a drink and its some hole in the wall, then just put on your jeans and t-shirt. But if its a date night, make sure to spice it up with a nice piece or two to show the other person that you consider this a special night with a special person.

                                For serious.

I mean, most of my stuff is a mix of pricey things and every day stuff. Hell, all summer I wore stuff I bought at Target. ($7 athletic fit tees are a godsend). Taking a nice looking pair of jeans and a basic tee and pairing them with a nice sweater or jacket and some good accessories (shoes, belt, watch, whatev) really makes a difference.

What I do, and what I've found works for me, is to keep in mind that trendy items come and go (hence the term, trendy). So I buy those things cheap. Then when they are no longer "the thing" I just donate or sell them. But classics? That's where I drop my money. Dress pants, suits, dress shirts, sweaters, jackets, coats and shoes? Generally purchased at a premium. But tees, shorts, shirts with designs or patterns on them? I get them at Target or Old Navy or something so I don't feel the next year as though I've wasted my money.
