Re: Church to protest Heath Ledger funeral.

Not very familiar with the Christian Bible, but I do seem to recall years ago a friend point out passages (in Old Testaments?) which seemed to say homosexual acts are sinful. Kinda hard to be absolutely sure, since the Biblical language is hard to read for me.

Then again, I also recall seeing a passage proclaiming it's OK if a man falls on a woman passing by and accidentally "penetrate" her. If it was really an accident. Well, for him anyway, still may still be a sin for her. (Hopefully not?)

Maybe the Book is just full strange and unusual situations--one has to guard against reading it out of context.
    Bamboo shadows sweep the stars,
    yet not a mote of dust is stirred;
Moonlight pierces the depths of the pond,
leaving no trace in the water.

            Quote:
I think it started because someone who was religious but afraid they might end up in hell wanted to alleviate their fears so found a way to interpret the Bible as using Hell as a metaphor

Which is similar to what I'm talking about-- in the same way people pick and choose what they want to follow, the bible is a large enough text that you can warp and interpret it in nearly any way you choose. I don't need to list the sorts of atrocities people have said the bible claims ok.
Actually, I grew up thinking (and still do) that Hell is indeed a metaphor.

I'm no big reader of the Bible or anything, so I don't know if there are other passages which contradict what I'm about to say or what.

However there is a passage in the Bible that says something to the effect that the sinners will come before God and (roughly) be so ashamed that they will wish that a mountain would fall on them to hide them from his sight/presence.

            Or something to that effect.

Basically, I think that when we meet God in the afterlife we will have full knowledge of why we were sent to Earth, what we were supposed to do (if anything) and know fully well all of our shortcomings and failings. Seemed so easy before you got down here didn't it?

God: Now remember, I want you to be good and play nicely with the other kids now!
PersonX: Yeah yeah, all I have to do is be good for 80 years, bring it on!

I can see it roughly going down like that. While I do think that there are many ways to interpret the Bible (and indeed there are) I don't think it's right to say that just because someone doesn't believe in Hell is because he doesn't want to go there.

There is going to be agony, there is going to be pain, and there is going to be shame. However I think that this will be self inflicted. God is the perfect Father, you didn't behave the way you should have and failed him. If it hurts to know that you failed your parents in some way just imagine how much worse it will be when facing God.

The really cool thing about Christianity though? That's ok if you failed God, you're his kid, he still loves you, and all he asks is that you try and then he'll take care of the rest.

Now sure, I may be a bit off, it's been awhile since I last read the Bible, but those are my thoughts in a nutshell.

Well, unless you wanna hear my thoughts about how Jesus didn't die on the cross for us.

            If'n you REALLY wanna know:

You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be misqouted and then used against you.

I don't have a big ego, it just has a large mouth.

Oh just find yourself a lawyer, there's like half a dozen things I can think of off the top of my head that this could be treated as, I'm sure there's some gay-rights group out there that would be happy to provide legal aid for you.

Re: Church to protest Heath Ledger funeral.

Thoris, just call the ACLU. They may be as crazy as any right-wing nutjob, but they'll jump on your case and do it for free most likely.

Vyuru, I don't necessarily think that everyone chooses not to believe in the existence of Hell, but thats really where the idea came from. Basically, Hell is the absence of God. Heaven is the complete presence of God. No pain, no suffering, worry, etc. He is present on Earth but kind of like a shadow of light (metaphor used by C.S. Lewis, basically I'm plagiarizing all of this because its the best description on what its likely all to be like that I've ever heard), there is still goodness, but there is also pain and such. Then there's Hell. I believe that the whole lake of fire, pools of acid etc. is a metaphor, but that there is actually an area where your soul goes if God deems it, where you are completely cut off from his presence and experience nothing but pain and agony.

Murphie: I know you and basically everyone else will probably get absolutely pissed when I say this, but I believe in a way that being gay is a choice.
Let me explain. I don't think its an actual cognitive choice where they way the benefits of each and just decide to be attracted to people of the same sex. I think its a combination of the subconscious, how people were raised in their formative years, and to an extent own body chemistry that determines if you're gay or not. I fully believe that there are people who are more likely to be tempted by homosexuality than others, based things like sensitivity, etc. I don't think its written into your genetic code that someone will be attracted to the same or opposite sex. At the same time, I won't say that anyone who is a homosexual is gonna go straight to hell. I do believe its a sin, but all sin is the same and its no worse than cussing, being rude, or disobeying your elder. And I've certainly been guilty of those thousands of times over. I have known Christians who have said that homosexuality is something they've struggled with just like any other temptation. I think some people are just more prone to it than others. So, everyone, please don't take offense, its one man's opinion based upon his beliefs. I've tried to be as respectful as possible when giving this opinion, though I'm sure I'll be called ignorant, an asshole, and a bigot and probably a few I haven't thought of yet.

EDIT: Thoris: Don't misunderstand, I think what your boss did was bullshit and he should be fired over it. You don't treat any person like that for any reason.

Actually, your response to Feba makes me want to insult you a little bit, but I know it's a waste of time.
